Hey everyone! I was passing through Pocatello, ID and saw these booster railcars sitting in the Union Pacific train yards. There were two sets of five segments joined together. Artemis 3 has already completed booster stacking, so could these be empty or perhaps for another rocket?

Orionid Meteors at 41 Miles Per Second!

Meteors are about to burst into our atmosphere at 41 miles per second! 🌠

The Orionid meteor shower peaks overnight October 21 and 22, and moves so fast that it leaves glowing trails. Active from October 2 to November 7 and visible from both hemispheres, the Orionids are best seen in the wee hours before dawn!

Good replacement for a dead TV?

I use it for gaming. My TV was a samsung smart tv I bought back in 2017. I just tried to turn it on and after fighting with it, it's dead.

I paid like 350 for it from best buy.

I work at walmart so I get a discount on stuff. Looking for a 40 inch or slightly bigger tv. Hopefully one with 4k since I've never had it. Any recommendations help.

Are TCL's any good? I was gonna buy another samsung but apparently their cheap tvs are shit now? I see TCL's that are roughly the same price.

Is too much complexity in society leading to a "Trolling Singularity" where there is too much info for voters to sufficiently evaluate?

Maybe society's complexity is reaching a point of no return, a "Trolling Singularity", where Gish-galloping usually wins because there's just too much detail for voters to properly absorb and make decent decisions. Those with the catchiest BS and over-simplifications win elections and influence too often, breaking down society.

Need help managing my screens with eye sensitivity

I have an issue going on that needs to be figured out like asap, as this is affecting my daily and physical life way too much, any advice means a lot. I've never posted about something like this before so if there's a better sub for this please lmk if this isn't the best one.

Long story short I have an illness that causes really bad eye sensitivity to light, especially screens. It's gotten worse and worse, now I can't even use my phone(an iphone). TVs/monitors are a lot more manageable, and I've spent some time trying to understand why this happens since adjusting basic settings like brightness/gamma or putting on night light doesn't do anything at this point.

From what I've found there's a handful of things to pay attention to like temporal dithering and pulse width modulation, and I've changed everything I can on the current TV I'm using like noise reduction and dynamic settings for contrast and gamma, along with adjusting all the normal display and color settings. But this is basically hopeless so far with an iPhone, which I will probably be replacing, so if there's any recommendations for that I'd appreciate it.

But also I just really want to know what I can do for my PC, which is what the TV is used with, along with another TV and monitor I use (since I switch between rooms with an extended setup). I've seen other stuff being important like matching the bit stuff and color depth from the gpu to screen, but not sure how to do that, and also have no idea how to change the other stuff i mentioned like the dithering and PWM. All I've been able to find on my gpu(an nvidia 5060) is the basic color stuff like contrast being a big one, and changing what I could with framerate stuff.

Hey everyone just stop by for asking. Do free online AI image generators keep uploaded photos or use them for training?

I'm trying to understand the privacy risks of free online AI image editors that can be used without creating an account.

If someone uploads a photo, generates an edited image, and later deletes the files from their own phone, could the website still retain copies on its servers?

Also, is there a reliable way to find out whether uploaded images are used for AI training when the privacy policy doesn't clearly say?

I'd appreciate factual explanations or experiences from people who have researched this topic.

What would the night sky look like near the Milky Way’s centre and would time pass more slowly there?

Hi everyone! I’m currently reading Cosmos by Carl Sagan (fantastic book) and came across a passage that has really stayed with me. Sagan suggests that if intelligent beings lived on a planet orbiting a star near the Milky Way’s galactic centre, their night sky might be ablaze with starlight because stars are much more densely concentrated there. Is that accurate? Would their night sky be dramatically brighter than ours, and might it never become truly dark? That also made me wonder re relativity. Because the galactic centre contains a much greater concentration of mass and the supermassive black hole would a clock on such a planet run more slowly relative to a clock here in the Milky Way’s spiral arms? If so, would the difference be meaningful, or far too small to notice unless the planet were extremely close to the black hole? I understand that time would feel completely normal to the beings themselves; I’m asking how their elapsed time would compare with ours. In this sense, could an intelligent civilisation be ahead of us, but then we catch them up and overtake them because we advance more rapidly relativistically.
Cheers!

Are cloud computing and data centers sustainable?

When I say sustainable, I don’t mean it as a buzzword. I mean whether the physical infrastructure can keep scaling to meet demand. To support ever growing cloud consumption and digitalization of stuff, especially with the rise of AI workloads.

Cloud providers have to keep building data centers and expanding capacity. Is there a point where we hit a hard limit, where we can’t add more compute, storage, or capacity because of constraints like power, land, cooling, or chip supply? You need water, electricity, GPUs, memory, copper, silicon, etc. And land too, although data centers I think are quite dense so unlike what most people think, I think it's not the biggest concern here.

As I said, obviously there's a limit, but my point is, will we ever hit it? What is the tendency growing to? And what are the biggest challenges?

And I know there's a huge ideological fatigue with climate discourse and whatnot, but this really seems concerning to me. I'm no expert on the matter, so maybe you guys can clear things up for me.

What do you wish your phone or computer could do automatically for you?

Hey everyone!
I’m a developer looking for an idea for my next project, and I’d love to hear from regular people about their everyday frustrations.
Think about all the little things you do on your phone or computer every day. Tasks that take time, repetitive actions, things you keep putting off, or stuff you wish could just happen automatically.
What would you want your phone or computer to do for you without having to ask it every single time?
For example:
Automatically organize your files, photos, screenshots, and downloads.
Handle boring paperwork, emails, or online forms.
Compare prices and find the best deal when shopping.
Keep track of important messages, bills, appointments, and deadlines.
Take care of repetitive tasks you currently do manually.
These are just examples — I’m much more interested in your own ideas!
It doesn’t have to involve AI or be anything complicated. It could be a small, annoying task that you wish technology would finally take care of.
What’s something you still do manually that you think your phone or computer should be smart enough to handle by itself?
I’d love to hear what would genuinely make your everyday life easier!😊

Should I Buy a Gaming Laptop or Build a PC? Need Some Advice

Should I Buy a Gaming Laptop or Build a PC? Need Some Advice

I currently have a 10-year-old all-in-one PC with an i3 processor. It overheats and shuts down even while browsing Chrome, so I need a new system.

I have a job, but I also want to start earning on the side through YouTube and freelancing. I'm interested in gaming too, so I need a system that can handle video editing, gaming, and other creative work.

My budget is:

- Laptop: ₹70K, stretchable to ₹75K

- PC: Up to ₹90K

Due to the current price hikes, I'm confused about which option makes more sense. I can get a decent PC build for ₹90K, but a laptop around ₹70–75K would offer portability. The biggest advantage of a PC is that I can upgrade it later, whereas laptop upgrades are limited.

I'll also be buying on EMI, which means the total cost could be ₹10–15K higher than the actual price.

I'm considering buying a laptop now for around ₹70K and building a better PC later if I start earning from YouTube or freelancing. But there's no guarantee I'll make money from these activities, and spending ₹90K on a PC without generating any income would be a risk.

What would you recommend in my situation? Should I buy a laptop now or invest in a PC? I'd appreciate advice from people who have experience with both, especially regarding long-term value and performance.

I am looking for famous mission patches to sew on my jacket, what should I get?

Hello, I don't know if this question is allowed here.

I want to do a craft project for myself and sew important spaceflight mission patches on my jacket. I plan to have an Apollo 11 and the Artemis patches on there as well as some Starship ones, also the space programs logos. What are your recommendations? What should I add?

For the record, I am German, so I don't want exclusively American missions on it.

Where Did the Universe Come From? Discussing the Biggest Mysteries of Reality with Astrophysicist Geraint F. Lewis

Hi, everyone, I had a great conversation with Geraint F. Lewis, a Welsh astrophysicist and Professor at the University of Sydney, about some of the biggest questions in cosmology, physics, and our understanding of the world.

We explore what the Big Bang theory tells us about the beginning of the universe, why our current understanding of physics reaches limits when we try to look further back in time, and how neutrinos could reveal secrets about the cosmos — including why matter exists at all. We also mention the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics, awarded to Francis Halzen for his work on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.

Professor Lewis also explores what sparked the Scientific Revolution, how modern science transformed our understanding of the world, and why Einstein challenged aspects of quantum mechanics.

Professor Lewis's latest book, The Shortest History of Reality: From Plato’s Cave to the Mind-Bending Discoveries of Modern Physics — The Human Quest to Explain the World, traces humanity’s changing understanding of reality, from everyday intuition and ancient philosophy to the discoveries of modern physics. It explores the ideas that reshaped our view of existence, from Newton’s universe to the strange probabilities of quantum physics and beyond.
