Drama over nothing. The REAL Metallica controversy should be over why their tickets cost over $1000.

u/EfficientDish7 16h ago

The real Metallica controversy is why they allowed Lars to turn the bass lines down in justice for all

186

u/TheWizardOfDeez 16h ago

More like why they still allow lars to fuck up on the drums svery night and not find a new drummer who can keep a rhythm. There is a video out there of Joey Jordison (RIP) of Slipknot fame playing an entire concert with Metallica and it's literally so much better. He's playing the parts that Lars wrote, just on time.

u/Fabulous_Smoke2582 15h ago

Was he rushing or dragging?

u/torgo3000 15h ago

With Lars the answer is “yes”

8

u/edison9696 14h ago

I get the chills watching any reminders of Whiplash. His acting performance was insanely scary.

2

u/chipshot 10h ago

He can do anything well

2

u/twosharpbladez 14h ago

No quite my tempo

2

u/RalphiePegalotti 9h ago

Goddamn that was a good movie.

1

u/Fabulous_Smoke2582 8h ago

It really is. Absolute masterpiece.

And I learned some wonderful insults haha

22

u/Late_As_Sometimes 16h ago

And Dave Lambardo. Him and Joey were great as substitute drummers for Metallica, when Lars was on the mend.

21

u/TheDarkWave 13h ago

Lars isn't even the best drummer in Metallica.

9

u/AyeHaightEweAwl 13h ago

"on the mend" LOL - he was partying too hard the night before.

1

u/Flutterpiewow 6h ago

Was the official story back pain?

3

u/AyeHaightEweAwl 13h ago

Dave Lombardo too, from that same gig. Lars was too hungover to play. James actually had to keep up with the drummer for once, instead of the other way around.

3

u/ElMuchoQueso 15h ago

Lars composed most of the music

9

u/TheWizardOfDeez 14h ago

I'm not questioning Lars' ability as a composer, his issue is being trash at drumming for one of the biggest metal bands in the world is crazy.

3

u/TheDarkWave 13h ago

No, that's Hetfield that wrote most of the music. Lars just paid for the band to exist while being a mediocre drummer with no plans to get better at it.

3

u/MilqueD-schaaje 12h ago

"Your dad's not in the fuckin' band Lars!"

2

u/luminatimids 9h ago

Idk why people say this. Hetfield writes most of the music, I know Lars contributes some input but he doesn’t “compose most of the music” like this comment implies

2

u/Jorisfrombelgium 15h ago

Well no, he’s not playing an entire concert. What a shit wizard!

1

u/Cptn_Shiner 14h ago

It's his band. Who's going to fire him?

1

u/TheWizardOfDeez 10h ago

James Herfield doesn't exist? He can also fire himself by simply acknowledging that his prime is behind him and he's not able to keep up with the band anymore.

1

u/gabagoolforever 12h ago

Lars literally owns Metallica and has a huge hand in their incredible success over the years.

0

u/Funny_Lynx_3395 11h ago

Wouldn't have Metallica without Lars. They've managed to become literally one of the greatest bands of all time with him on the drums. Id say he's doing just fine.

1

u/TheWizardOfDeez 10h ago

Then he got old and slow and can't keep a rhythm. Of course he's doing fine monetarily or whatever, but that doesn't counter the argument I made. Are you some kind of Lars stan?

1

u/Funny_Lynx_3395 10h ago

No, just love Metallica. Seen them twice in the last year and they sounded fantastic. Sometimes loving your bandmates is more important than a drummer that can be 1ms faster when needed.

2

u/TheWizardOfDeez 9h ago

It's not just 1ms. I love Metallica too, Lars is a bad drummer.you can both be a fan and be objective at the same time. Lars is also an all time great asswipe just generally sooooo

1

u/Funny_Lynx_3395 8h ago

Sounds pretty damn good and has played drums on some pretty damn successful tracks for a bad drummer. Technical skillset aside....simply put, there is no Metallica without Lars. For that reason alone, I love the guy, and wouldnt want anyone else creating Metallica tracks with James.

7

u/lsdisciple 14h ago

Justice for Jason!!!!!!

Sounds so much better

3

u/Infidel_sg 15h ago

So we can hear him fuck up his drums 😂

3

u/PrestigiousOne5959 11h ago

Kirk barely bothers with his solos anymore either

3

u/PMmecrossstitch 9h ago

And Justice for Jason

This playlist is worth a listen.

2

u/Procrasturbating 14h ago

Honestly, I listened to a mix with the bass a little more forward.. they didn’t let him do anything but play the root notes either. Weird thing to do to honor your dead bandmate.. haze the new one… I can kinda stand Kirk.. James and Lars bum me out. Truillo is a monster though, love his collected works.

2

u/iolarah 3h ago

JUSTICE FOR JASON

2

u/testing_in_prod_only 9h ago

Find me a drummer who’s done worse for their group than Lars…. I’ll wait.

1

u/AncientSignature1505 3h ago

Tommy Lee? Ginger Baker? Maybe Buddy Rich, but his band was more of an ensemble.

1

u/returntothenorth 16h ago

I honestly didn't know the other band members still played. I can't hear past lars with the drums turned to 11.

1

u/ApprehensiveGate8227 13h ago

Lars has been sabotaging the rhythm section his entire career

0

u/peanutschool 12h ago

The “real Metallica controversy” is something that happened almost 40 years ago?

1

u/EfficientDish7 8h ago

Yes because it involves Metallica

0

u/peanutschool 7h ago

Oh, good point. This decades-old controversy about which there is nearly unanimous opinion and which has been directly addressed by the band on numerous occasions simply must be addressed.

0

u/aBearnamedMrQ 5h ago

This man is asking the true hard hitting questions. Honestly, they just didn’t have cliff and had to improvise.

61

u/scubaorbit 17h ago

Are you shitting me? Last one I went to was $80 in the early 2000s. Who the hell pays that much for a ticket? And better yet, who can?

31

u/4stringsoffury 16h ago edited 15h ago

It’s the sphere. I believe every ticket sold there has been well above $500 in regards to concerts. The Wizard of Oz plays there daily and the bad seats are still $300.

Edit: there are concert tickets cheaper than $500 my bad. I’ll say Metallica has always had egregious ticket prices, I was just trying to give a reason these were astronomical.

5

u/bulldozer6 15h ago

This is not true. Lots of tickets are under $500 for concerts at the sphere.

3

u/4stringsoffury 15h ago edited 15h ago

For the ones under residency? I believe you but the big names have always been priced high like the eagles and phish

3

u/bulldozer6 15h ago

I'm not saying they're cheap but I've been to plenty of shows there where tickets were less than 500. No doubt. Kenny chesney. Zach brown band.

1

u/4stringsoffury 15h ago

You know, I literally thought the only concerts there were the residency ones. I will edit my comment

3

u/bulldozer6 15h ago

Those were all considered residencies i think. They don't do one off shows there. I believe it costs a fortune to create all the graphics so there's always multiple shows by a particular performer.

1

u/chasteguy2018 13h ago

I mean it makes sense. I’m guessing they have to spend a ton to make a show that ONLY works with that venue and nowhere else. If you barely play there that’s a huge investment that has a small window to recoup

2

u/MikeShannonThaGawd 15h ago

I had pretty good wizard of oz seats for less than $150

2

u/blockcitywins 11h ago

I paid 125 for decent seats.

1

u/Roo_Rammin_Russell 52m ago

Was it obvious that they used a ton of AI? I was curious to see it til I read about how so much of the CG was automated

1

u/carelessCRISPR_ 15h ago

I got tickets to Dead & Company there day of on TickPick for $89. Just saying. My friends got Phish tickets for less than $100 as well.

1

u/4stringsoffury 15h ago

Well that’s a lot more reasonable. I thought phish were like $700+. I had a friend who tried to get tickets when it first opened. My bad.

1

u/FTownRoad 15h ago

Average ticket price for all events is a bit over $200.

13

u/MiserableAdvice468 16h ago

Click that affirm box at check out and pay off that loan for the next 3-5 years lol

1

u/blahnlahblah0213 16h ago

I saw Judas Priest and Metallica the same concert in the 80s for probably twenty bucks

1

u/cainhurstboy 16h ago

Fuck i was curious on Iron and Wine tickets and those are $250. Fuck going to concerts pretty much for good

1

u/darkcar 5h ago

Iron and Wine is so great, cheers brother.

1

u/madogvelkor 14h ago

They are playing at the Mohegan Sun in CT next month (admittedly a smaller venue than usual) and tickets started at $565.

1

u/Ianthin1 14h ago

Saw them in the mid 90's, was 10 rows from the stage and it was less than $35.

1

u/Common-Break-Queef 14h ago

They should've done songs about greed and being ridicilous. I've listened to rock and metal my whole life, but metallica is overrated imo. They were huge and every new rock/metal listener might drag some metallica in their life, but metal is not mainstream anymore even here in finland or anywhere. "Our policy is fuck the politics as long as you buy our ticket"-kind of mentality keeps me the hell away from their music.

1

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins 8h ago

Because Metallica fans are now all hitting 40+ and plenty of them can indeed afford those tickets.

1

u/darkcar 5h ago

I am not a concert goer, so I could be missing something, but tickets seem to be over $400 for bad seats ( like a corner sections in most stadiums) and $900+ for 50 yard line.

I was looking at Vancover BC and Salt lake tickets, probably soccer stadiums.

0

u/Old_Fox_1985 16h ago

$1,000 tickets? IN THIS ECONOMY?

11

u/Common-Break-Queef 14h ago

It's because napster took their money /s

9

u/sanchez2673 16h ago

Saw them a couple of months ago for ~150€

-1

u/APoolio12 16h ago

This was at The Sphere in Vegas, so I'm sure the venue was part of the upcharge. The cheap tickets were 1000. Ugh. I think American venues in general might be more expensive. Went to a concert in Canada last year. Cost of plane tickets, hotel room, and concert tickets came out to less than just the concert tickets in my home town.

1

u/Justonian12 14h ago

I was at the show he said this at, and was lucky enough to have great seats in the 200 level in the center and was also lucky enough to not have to pay because of a family member but retail on them was $350. It’s all the resale that’s insane. When they went on sale they weren’t THAT bad. (Not that $350 is cheap though)

7

u/UnlitBlunt 16h ago

I got floor tickets for both nights of their M72 tour for 500CAD (250 per show). Different opening bands and different setlist each night, absolutely worth it.

2

u/SideInitial3961 16h ago

Or why their music has sucked so badly for a great number of years. RIP Cliff.

2

u/samsonite441446 16h ago

They always liked money :)

2

u/originalfilmscoring 16h ago

Most tickets are. We traded cheap/affordable shows for the convenience of streaming. Now that streaming is big everyone makes their money on shows.

0

u/Hallwart 16h ago

That's BS. It's only the giant arena shows that are this expensive

2

u/originalfilmscoring 15h ago

Brother I paid $15 for warped tour in the early 2000’s. You literally can not find a show for that much now, let alone one with multiple bands.

2

u/scottiedagolfmachine 15h ago

Real question is why are there morons out there paying $1k per ticket?

👀

3

u/No-Swordfish1385 15h ago

You either die a Kurt Cobain or live long enough to become a capitalist

3

u/Psychotria_Nervosa 13h ago

They've always been sellout wastes of space

1

u/TheWizardOfDeez 16h ago

As with all other music acts, the ticket prices aren't being set by the artists it's being set by Ticket Master and they barely make any of that $1000. Fuck James Hetfield here still though.

1

u/Aggressive-Cut-5400 16h ago

Or why they sucked since the black album? Listened to it once and never again… wholly god was that not what they were.

1

u/tasteMyRottenHoop 16h ago

I saw them supporting Black Sabbath for £250.

1

u/dweezilMcCheezil 15h ago

At non sphere venues they can be had for $50....

1

u/ZyklonBeach 15h ago

For one, $1000 has got to be a more extreme outlier. For two, as a former stagehand union carsholder who worked a few Metallica shows, they ball out. Last teardown I did at lincoln financial involved 2 seperate 10 hour shift crews, had three cranes on the field dismantling four huge 300 ft towers, we had at least 30 people doing scaff, and the whole thing packed into something like 40 TTs.

1

u/Radiant-Bluejay4194 15h ago

what seats? i payed about 150€ for mine this year

1

u/Heavy-Spell-6849 15h ago

They aren’t though. Me and my dad got tickets for both shows for 800 cad after tax.

1

u/SapphireSync 14h ago

That is what you call ironic. Aerosmith called it out in 2011 with Ticketmaster

1

u/SturmGizmo 14h ago

I couldn't believe the ticket prices when I went to buy them a couple weeks ago. I thought there was something wrong with the website.

1

u/ReasonablePossum_ 13h ago

Let me translate your comment to the masses: "I do not care about morals, ethics, nor who supports what injustices in the world. I'm a simple consumer sheeple whose interests don't go beyond my wallet or my crotch. And I'll try to invalidate anyone that does to not feel like i'm supposed to see myself as bad and break my personal narcisistic self-image".

1

u/pbgod 13h ago

Not really... they cost what people will pay.

1

u/Bananaland_Man 13h ago

Ticketmaster monopoly bullshit. If it weren't for that, no tickets would be that high outside of very specific events.

1

u/Rambler1223 13h ago

Such a pussy take! They have multiple albums speaking out against “masters of power like drugs military and corrupt politicians” to quote the bad themselves! They have songs against genocide and then during the most corrupt Administration in American history and multiple Genocide they are going to be fence sitters. I completely understand why people think this is cheesy as fuck and that metallic is bitch made!

1

u/Comprehensive_Log173 13h ago

I just bought Metallica tickets for m72 tour for around $200. Although some of the floor seats were over a grand which is insane but probably nothing compared to what swift tickets go for

1

u/TheShoot141 12h ago

I see them in the sphere tomorrow and we paid like $150 each.

1

u/Electrical_Truth_160 11h ago

Free my walletstine!

1

u/Edenoide 11h ago

Money good! Politics baaaad!

1

u/chipshot 10h ago

I went to see the grateful dead at the colluseun for 8 dollars back when the middle class still existed, and dinosaurs walked the earth

1

u/RevolutionaryLab654 9h ago

I just bought GA floor tickets right next to the stage for $250, happening next year. Get real.

1

u/lkern 8h ago

No they don't lol.

1

u/Jeej_Soup 7h ago

Ticketmaster

1

u/Dookie-Trousers-MD 7h ago

I saw Metallica and 4 other bands in 1997 for $38

1

u/Hermes_358 4h ago

Two sides of the same conversation (I mean coin).

1

u/drunxor 4h ago

I mean they also have a song with the lyrics "Ive even fucked a school girls twat". That plus the whole napster thing always made me wonder why people support them so much

1

u/stoopkidsteve 16h ago

You mean the higher selling tickets for VIP? Cause this is pretty standard for most bands this big. Stop trying to spread misinformation to fit your narritive, it's gross.

0

u/Remote_Finish9657 14h ago

It’s specifically for the Sphere. I’ve been to plenty of shows for $200 (solid seats) the last several years. My wife was kicking the tires on seeing the Backstreet Boys there a few years ago and she quickly pulled the plug because tickets were exorbitant.
