And you honestly think your father could support a family of 6 on the same single income today?

u/Imaginary_Manner_556 14h ago

Or be able to buy a 1400 sq ft home?

I bought a 1400 square foot home on a single income. What’s the question here?

Add 6 kids and a stay at home wife. Can you do it now?

If they don’t have PlayStations, computers, smart phones and tv subscriptions, maybe.

u/reggers20 12h ago

If your wife didn't poison you first your kids would definitely push you down the stairs

What an edge lord!

The fact that you said you would have to live without a computer, any tv, and without a smart phone AND still think you only maybe could do it instead of definitely being able to do it proves exactly our point.

Besides smart phones are really cheap, you can get one for $20. If you think you couldnt afford a smart phone while supporting 6 kids it means you would literally not have 20 bucks in the bank. if literally ANYTHING went wrong you are entirely fucked. Your car breaks down, you cant go to work and cant afford to fix it, and because you dont have a phone you cant tell your job that you are going to be late/cant make it in and they fire you for no-call no-showing. If your roof gets damaged, you cant afford to fix it and your house floods and gets condeemed. ETC ETC ETC

Lol how much does the phone line cost per month? How mush does internet cost?

If you’re going to live a lifestyle with way more luxuries than people of the past, you can’t complain about people of the past being able to get more out of their paycheck.

When I was homeless I had a $20 phone and had paid for minutes and texts individually, no monthly charge. I paid like $15 a year for it since I only ever called/texted my job, so if you want to make that into a monthly cost it was $1.2 a month.

Once again if you cant afford that then you are absolutely fucked.

Lol multiply that by a family of five and tell the the kids not to actually use it. See how that works out 😂

Wow. You solved the housing crisis. Congrats

If we could solve it by collecting Gen Z tears, we’d be all set!

u/Imaginary_Manner_556 12h ago

Oh god, I didn’t mean to debate with a MAGA

Yeah this just sounds like a guy who has it pretty good complaining about his lobster being too buttery. You mean one guy had 6 kids and a house and a stay at home wife and road trips to Wisconsin? You got to have a neighborhood where you can have a social life? I'll work 70 hours a work and not even be able to afford to live in town by myself.

no way. the economy is less strong now than what the Boomers enjoyed (there was like this economic boom). Boomers' brains' peaked in like the 1980's. Why would anyone expect their economic advice to be perfectly updated for an economy they never experienced?

Whining about Boomers is less than useless. Hating Boomers, maga, etc. is just useful division politics to confuse you from your actual problems. Hate is serving your corporate owners more than it's serving you. Stop being owned instead imo.

If you dont like the way Boomers vote.....neither do I. Luckily there are way more non-Boomers in the world, so any outcomes of elections are not strictly their doing.

He honestly does...and he has "proof" LOL

I support a family of 8 on (adjusted for inflation) only a bit more.

1

u/Alexyogurt 14h ago

Bullshit.

1

u/romeodread 13h ago

I supported 7 people on one income up until about 2 years ago. It wasn’t that hard. I’d probably still be doing it had she not been cheating on me.

u/Fit_Emotion1999 13h ago

He didn't say how much he was making so what are you even talking about? Are you saying with an IT job? Then your probably full of shit. I mean if someone is in a Principal Engineer level position pulling in $350k+ then ya, but those roles and salaries are rare. The average salary for a senior engineer in what I do is $150k ish, which would not support a family of 8 in a HCOL. Even in the Miami metro which is not quite as bad as the really HCOL a family of 8 on $150k isn't happening.

1

u/CrippledEagles 13h ago

Who is holding a gun to your head saying you have to live in a HCOL area? I intentionally moved from an HCOL to rural(ish) Indiana. I live way better on a lot less.

0

u/Mental_Amphibian1935 13h ago

No you don’t

2

u/CrippledEagles 13h ago

Its all about choices buddy.

6

u/Caspica 15h ago

What do you think that graph shows exactly?

4

u/Dediadeis 14h ago

It is what its not showing that is important really.

2

u/Caspica 14h ago

Exactly.

2

u/PorchCat0921 14h ago

Our dollar isn't worth as much as it was in 2010 either

5

u/Tak-and-Alix 14h ago

That is adjusted for inflation, but inflation conveniently doesn't include the things that have seen the largest price increases

1

u/Imaginary_Manner_556 13h ago

Now show us housing, cars, healthcare and education

1

u/NiceGuy737 12h ago

For housing, current affordability is 105.4. Houses are twice as affordable as at the nadir of affordability in 1981.

Education and healthcare costs are included in the CPI and that graph is adjusted for inflation ("adjusted to 2010 dollars")

1

u/Imaginary_Manner_556 12h ago

LOL. One cherry picked year. And there’s a reason why you don’t want to show education and healthcare line items.

1

u/NiceGuy737 10h ago

The graph includes all the other years.

1

u/Imaginary_Manner_556 10h ago

This graph is propaganda from realtors. If you really believe that homes are more affordable than the 1980’s and 90’s I don’t know what to tell you.

1

u/NiceGuy737 9h ago

This is really simple to verify if you don't believe it. Calculate a mortgage payment from the 80s and one from today using median home price and the appropriate interest rate, compare that to median income.

Below is rent divided by median personal income. Rents were also more expensive in the past relative to income.
