Back in my day, it was the “watch this carefully” or the “try and move your cursor through the maze” just to have a jump scare with the exorcist face and a loud scream. It was mean spirited back then and it is now

My older brother did that one to me. Still mad about it. It’s been like 20 years but he’s lucky he lives in a different state when I remember. lol.

My sister got me and I threw myself back so hard that I rolled across the floor.

Yeah but it was our asshole siblings and classmates that tricked us into that shit. And they usually didn't record it.

Dang y’all were lucky then haha, my mom was the one that showed me one of the “watch carefully” ones. There was no camera at least though, so I guess I can be grateful for that

My mom just jumped out behind doors to get me. We treated it like war. I'd wait for my opportunity to get her back, get hit with whatever she was holding in her hand at the time. That shits actually fun.

My mom straight up took me on haunted hay rides when I was 6. She laughed so hard she cried.

Aw that does sound fun, I’m glad you guys have/had a fun relationship. If I ever scared my mom back she for sure would’ve just pissed herself and then freaked out on me in some way lol

She started it. I do the same this with my kid. As far as I'm concerned, getting hit is a reasonable consequence to scaring someone, so I'm cool with it.

I remember it fondly when my Dad showed me one of those videos. Obviously I was scared at the time, but it's funny in hindsight. Get over yourself, it's not "mean-spirited," it's a lighthearted prank.

I feel like it depends on a few things. Like it’s probably fine to do it to an older kid who you already have an established prank-y relationship with. But it was genuinely terrifying when my mom did that to me as a young child who did not have a good relationship with her. She was never excited to do anything with me or to show me anything. So when she excitedly asked to show me a video I really thought we were finally about to spend a nice moment together and bond over something she liked. But nope, I just had a heart attack and cried a lot while being laughed at. So it definitely felt mean spirited to me

Back in my day period people sent funny clips of their kids to be broadcasted on Americas Funniest Home Videos. Back in my day people took their kids to haunted farms and houses to scare the shit out of them. I think we all survived.

Right so going to a haunted farm/house has a built in expectation that you were going somewhere scary to be scared. Not being lied to to be scared. Thats where the mean spirited-ness of it comes in

I see your point about that, I just don't think doing this is some new human behavior, it's just a new medium.

That’s…that’s exactly the point I was making in the comment you initially responded to
