I don't mind that gambling is legal. I'm pretty liberal in the fact I think people should be able to do what they want. With all the information out there and the Internet, you still want to smoke cigs? Go for it buddy.

You don't see cigarette ads. I don't care if people sports gamble, but the ads are wild to me. They even have like in game sports betting lines during the broadcast. It's insane

I'm generally anti prohibition. With the gambling ads and industry there are three huge issues. First, this whole "futures" loophole that allows Kalshi and such to operate with impunity needs to go. A state of should be able to decide whether gambling is legal and how so. It just feels like a local issue.

Second, it's obviously problematic that you can bet on real world events, as this incentivizes interference with those events. It seems inevitable a political candidate will be hurt to effect a gambling outcome.

Third, the ads need to be better regulated. Just like with cigarettes, force these companies to show the harms and losses.

I'm fine with sports betting generally, but the online apps are a scourge and should be banned. They're extremely predatory due to algorithms predicting and encouraging you to gamble more.

9

u/functional_moron 1d ago

And the ads are all very obviously targeting dumb teenage boys (or very dumb grown men)

3

u/Apprehensive-Bag-900 1d ago

My boyfriends dad was a bad gambler, like it was a huge issue for a while. The only reason he didn't do the online betting is you need an unexpired ID. I told him I'd take him, he just needed to make an appointment. He never did and I didn't push it because I didn't want him able to gamble from his phone.

u/WaltzLeft6749 1d ago

I dont think gambling is a gendered thing. I dated someone not too long ago that would be glued to her phone while we were out, completely locked in on her sports betting. She didnt even like sports.

2

u/YimmyGhey 1d ago

Bring back the days of having to actually go somewhere to place a bet

6

u/michaelxmoney 1d ago

Sydney Sweeney in her new stupid "sports" commercial, has a line where she It's referencing this exact thing, "insider trading on real world events" I believe she says.

2

u/redveinlover 1d ago

I mean they do put the gamblers anonymous hotline number in a tiny corner of the screen for 0.5 seconds

1

u/mojorisin453 1d ago

I agree. I think adults should be able to do what they want essentially but there’s a sweet spot for regulation and taxation. I think alcohol is way too cheap right now here. A half handle of vodka can be had in my state for less than $20. Cannabis is cheaper than basil. We do have a good system though with the liquor outlets being limited. I think if drugs are all legalized it should be like sure you can get some acid but the store is only open Monday and Thursdays for like 4 hours.

u/Bad_Repute 1d ago

I'm a person with generally libertarian sensibilities. I think people, as individuals, should be able to do anything they want as long as it's not hurting others, basically think there should be no regulations on personal consumption and expression.

And on the note of expression, again i think individuals should have personal freedom of speech/expression, where i start drawing lines is in commercial speech. All regulations should be on the production, distribution, and advertising sides of things. Don't limit what people are able to consume and enjoy, tightly control how things are able to be made, distributed, and advertised.

If i think people should be able to do heroin or meth if they want to, that doesn't mean i think they should be able to buy that stuff at their corner store and/or see commercials for it on daytime broadcast TV.

Both of you are right. You are right about the fact that gambling is a choice and we should not care about those who succumb to it, while he is right about it being the scam.

A close friend of mine is working with one company developing the software for online gamble sites. We spokr few times about the things those companies are doing to try and get you hooked up, as well as yo scam you out of the last penny you get. And we are not talking about the scams in forms of false promises, no no. We are talking about major stuff, like you not being able to withdraw your winnings or money magically disappearing from your account, or simply getting banned from further gambling just because you were doing so well.

And, what's worse is that, apparently, all of this is legal, because you are required to accept their miles-long terms and conditions, which would be a challenge even for lawyers to read, let alone regular gamblers. Who knows, maybe somewhere along those lines is something against the law, maybe some gamblers could sue them and win them on the court, but they have a strong lobby within the government, so I doubt it would do any good.

So, in the end, the gambling industry is like how tobacco used to be before those congressional hearings, where they were forced to admit that nicotine is addictive and toxic, after when they were obliged to put the warnings on the packs. Right now, they are telling us about the possible wins you can get, but no one tells us about all the dangers it brings along.

u/Any_Revolution1071 1d ago

"we should not care about those who succumb to it" ethics and morals are ultimately subjective so saying you're wrong would be as empty and daft as it would be to say "you are right" 😉 but your sentiment is gross, inhumane, and antisocial. Phew, what a trash society we've made where caring for your neighbor is treated as wrong.

And "choice" carries a lot of weight in your stance when free-will is ultimately an irrational concept, which is actively antithetical to a growing body of neuroscience.

No lie, I didn't read past your first paragraph. The first bite was horseshit so I didn't see cause to finish the dish. And I don't check responses so I won't be coming back if you choose to respond. Feel free to yell into the void if you feel it. The choice is yours, illusory though it may be

2

u/cvele89 1d ago

We all know you are full of shit when you say that you are not checking the responses, but feel free not to give any response, it is your choice.

I just wanted to clarify a bit that got you pissed off: it's not that we don't need to care about those people at all, but it is not like they are dragged into it against their will. If you are so weak-minded that you keep falling for obvious traps, that's on you. But, if you are already deep into it and want to come out, but you cannot, then I will try to help you. Otherwise, it's still on you.

There.

It's also crazy that I live in Utah, A state where it isn't legal to gamble, and I see more gambling ads than fast food.

10

u/El_Galant 1d ago

That's crazy... Harsh reality of sports. I've only been to a few NFL games in person, and I was watching a moment where nobody moved but no timeout was taken, and then it hit me, 'it's a commercial break'.

10

u/BWRichardCranium 1d ago

I believe it. I watched a few games with my dad this weekend when I was visiting. It felt like they took a break after every play for a commercial. Sometimes had multiple plays between but that felt rare.

4

u/S_C_H_L_O_R_P 1d ago

"media timeout"

2

u/Benblishem 1d ago

During the MLB Playoffs they've been showing split-screen ads during the game. The greed in just insatiable.

7

u/someredditgoat 1d ago

Where I find myself upset about it is that we went straight from illegal to completely deregulated. You really should not be able to gamble away a paycheck on impulse from your couch.

22

u/pervertedmortician 1d ago

Exactly

I personally think alcohol is a bigger problem, but its not promoted like gambling is

Its like not even something that considered a bad habit anymore

Its wild to me

14

u/Special-Homework-894 1d ago

Alcohol is 100 percent wildly promoted

8

u/elevencharles 1d ago

At least there’s not an app on your phone that can dispense alcohol at the touch of a button.

2

u/Platt_Mallar 1d ago

I understand your point, and agree with it.

I just wanted to point out that some states allow drive-thru liquor stores.

3

u/Bad_Repute 1d ago

I've had friends get cases of whiteclaws delivered on doordash. That's basically alcohol at the touch of a button.

3

u/SargeUnited 1d ago

That’s a scam. I remember Drizly and Minibar. Same prices as in-store, and sometimes it was even cheaper due to promotions.

It was cheaper to have the booze delivered to my doorstep including a tip than it would be to go get it myself. It’s a miracle I survived.

Uber and DoorDash increase the price of everything by at least like 10 to 30%. And that’s before the fees, delivery charge, and of course, if you don’t tip at least five or $10, you’re worse than a rapist or murderer in the eyes of the driver. Total scam.

6

u/Turd_Burgling_Ted 1d ago

My mom (an ex smoker) always used to say 'god forbid that camel smokes, at least he can still go to a football game, get drunk, and drive his car into someone's living room though'

1

u/Former-Dig-3314 1d ago

2 things can be a big problem.

1

u/Fabulous-Educator447 1d ago

That’s why they call it “gaming”

1

u/rimshot101 1d ago

We tried banning it. Didn't work out so well.

1

u/Winstonth 1d ago

Beer and trucks oh and don’t drink and drive

1

u/ChartInFurch 1d ago

Is it the combination that makes it no longer a choice to do so?

1

u/Winstonth 1d ago

Listen all I told the cop was it was entrapment; I drank, I bought a car like the tv man told me to…

1

u/JC1515 1d ago

“Go buy a 12 pack of ice cold, refreshing Bud Lights right now to receive 6 bonus Bud Lights when you purchase.”

1

u/KoltorTheGreat 1d ago

Idk as a kid alcohol ads never made me want to drink alcohol, but casino ads definitely made me think gambling was cool and that I could potentially win a lot of money. Although, I did accidentally drink some of my dad's beer when I was like 5 and thought it was disgusting, so maybe that had something to with the ads not working on me.

1

u/paulHarkonen 1d ago

I was playing a local rec level tournament this weekend and wound up on a team with a bunch of 18-20 year olds and all of them were betting either on our matches or kalshi things or whatever else. I realize it's a very small sample size, but it was wild to me how casual they were in discussing various bets they'd made or plan to make or whatever else. It was just so completely normalized for them.

1

u/Special-Homework-894 1d ago

I’m sorry but where have you been? Gambling has always been like that.

3

u/ChartInFurch 1d ago

I've found directly discussing my strategy out loud to not be beneficial in most competitive situations.

13

u/PetalumaPegleg 1d ago

Absolutely. I'm not pro a ban on gambling. But we don't have to make is quite so easy and we definitely don't have to let them advertise

2

u/Davti 1d ago

Theres a difference between a ban on gambling the activity (think loot boxes or tcg packs) and the promotion of casinos, gambling for money winnings, etc.

Im not even pro casino and would like for them to be better regulated in their advertisements - think non US cigarette packing.

2

u/apocolipse 1d ago

Nah it’s been a whole scam the whole time.  I agree let people do what they want to do, but gambling everywhere and way it’s been legalized these last 2 decades has been nothing but a grift all over. Every single time it’s been put to referendum in MD they promise taxes from it will go to education.  Every single time, taxes went to education, and an equal amount was diverted from education to other fucking grifts.   We’ve literally had 3 different gambling referendums all with the same promise, and 0 net benefit to our education funding, its frankly shocking people aren’t more outraged by that.

2

u/Gonna_do_this_again 1d ago

Gambling in general is fine to me, it should just stay in casinos.

2

u/a_bearded_hippie 1d ago

Dude the stuff during the broadcast drives me nuts. I am a lifelong hockey fan, life long Red Wings fan, the last 2 seasons, there was literally a guy hired on specifically to talk about the Fanduel betting lines and parlays during the fucking game. Luckily this year they didnt renew it or fanduel went under pretty sure.

1

u/No_Dragonfly1263 1d ago

Yea I was watching and Gronk did his like can't miss parlay during the broadcast lmao

2

u/FantasticPin3481 1d ago

Exactly this. Cigarettes are legal but you can’t advertise them and we do our best to make sure minors can’t obtain them. Thanks to mobile gambling there are no longer any such protections.

1

u/Everybodysbastard 1d ago

And not only that, the ads honestly suggest you're a pussy if you don't gamble.

1

u/Lannisters-4-life 1d ago

A gambling company paying a sports league directly looks super sketchy. That could lead to all sorts of bad outcomes and even allow the gambling company some level of influence in the operation of the sports leagues.

Instead, the gambling company pays the entity that pays the sports leagues (networks). So you see, there is clearly no conflict of interest or influence. It’s all completely independent and above board.

1

u/CorbonBleu 1d ago

I feel the same about drug ads

2

u/No_Dragonfly1263 1d ago

But have you considered if you take Wegovy you can go on that canoe trip you've been putting off?

1

u/blade-runner_1982 1d ago

Yeah, the barriers to entry has gone to near zero. In most states, having to download an app and enter bank information or (god forbid) a credit card number is the only barriers.

Gambling is pernicious and a blight on society. Sure, it probably shouldn't be outright banned, but we need it to not be as easy and ubiquitous.

1

u/soakthesin7921 1d ago

Completely agree. Its like we learn absolutely nothing from our past mistakes as a society

1

u/LuckyUser777 1d ago

This has gone from a guy talking about what his kid is exposed to, to whether or not adults should be exposed to cigarettes/alcohol/gambling. Yes, people can smoke if they want, the point here is about what kids should see.

1

u/Acewi 1d ago

Politicians asleep at the wheel.

1

u/DrJackl777 1d ago

Fuck cigarettes because second hand smoking. Just standing next to a Heavy smoker on a bus is awful. Other people smoking actively decreases my quality of life.

1

u/No_Dragonfly1263 1d ago

The Bartender at a bar my dad used to go to died of lung cancer... He didn't even smoke

0

u/ChildhoodHungry6073 1d ago

We don’t have cigarette ads because it’s illegal, so that’s a bad comparison

0

u/True-Suspect9891 1d ago

Just don’t watch the ads

-1

u/RealCarlPanzram 1d ago

If you’re okay with gambling, and sports are the main source of gambling that happens outside of a casino, why would you object to gambling ads during a sports game? Surely that’s the correct place for a gambling ad.

2

u/AspirationAtWork 1d ago

For the same reason advertisements for other vices are regulated or outright banned.
