It's the acronym (pedantry: it's an initialism, not an acronym, because each letter is pronounced individually). The backronym you're talking about is the english "Rocket Propelled Grenade". The original russian name is the 'nym' part from which the initialism is derived, but it's not 'acro', either.
You are correct it is an initialism, but I didn't want to get to pedantic, which I'm glad you did lol people love calling FBI an acronym when its not but NASA is lol
