Community Help Us Build the r/SantaClara Wiki!

Hi everyone!

It's been a hectic few months around here in r/santaclara, but I am happy to say that we survived the Super Bowl with limited issues which is a massive achievement for us as a community. Thank you to everyone for behaving, and also special thanks to u/TrucyWright who subbed in as a support mod to help navigate challenges if we were to get brigaded or massive traffic spikes.

Over the last few months we've grown significantly and have slowly become one of the most active subreddits in the Bay Area. Reddit Insights say that we've have over 300,000 views in the last 30 days which is a spectacular number.

Looking into the future, I'd love to start building some community resources for our visitors, help answer common questions, and lay the groundwork for the subreddit to be a starting place for folks to build their own communities within Santa Clara for sports, networking, friends, and more.

The easiest place to start with all of that would be to build a Wiki and FAQ for the subreddit!

I'd like to use this thread as a place to focus the wiki development, and I'll also be leaving some comments below to start the subject trees for the wiki. If you have ideas for what you'd like to see in the wiki, or would like to provide some links and resources and add to the wiki, this is the place to start!

Find the work in progress wiki here!

We'd really appreciate any help for all future and current Santa Clarans.

Impressions from a City Council Meeting

Post image
42 Upvotes

I went to that 5+ hour Santa Clara City Council meeting on 10/6/26 in order to put in my 2cents about the data center moratorium. I'd never been to a city council meeting anywhere, and it was an eye-opening (and often yawn-inducing) experience. For those who haven't been to one, I strongly encourage you to go at least once. And bring snacks, a pillow for your chair, maybe even a thermos of coffee.

I'm not a reporter, so I don't feel obliged to provide a full description of what actually happened. Instead, here are some random impressions that may benefit folks who are now considering who to vote for on their mayoral ballot.

  1. I love Suds Jain. That guy is right on target with his questions and recommendations for how to really solve problems. Never tell me anything bad about him.
  2. Kevin Park is a blowhard. He's that guy who when you see that he's going to be in your meeting at work you know that nothing is going to get decided on because he's going to hog the call to voice his opinion on stuff, won't listen to anything anybody else says other than to shoot it down, and never actually make any actionable suggestions. Please don't vote for him for Mayor, folks!
  3. Lisa Gillmore seems pretty neat. I wouldn't rank her in the stars yet like I would Jain, but I thought she handled the meeting well, making sure that everyone had opportunities to share their thoughts, ask questions, keeping Park in check as much as possible (even when he was interrupting the opening procedures just to accuse her of texting on her phone!)
  4. Raj Chahal seems okay but conservative. Not in a maga way, but in the old school Republicans-before-newt-gingrich kind of way that I miss sooo much. I can't believe I'm admitting that in public. Why can't we go back to arguing about fiscal conservatism vs. social safety nets type of arguments?
  5. Karen Hardy seems sensible but cautious. Very concerned about taking on liability and promising investments we can't afford. But seems to be on the good side as far as the NDA ban goes.
  6. Kelly Cox also seems sensible. Didn't talk much but when she did it was clear she was paying attention to what everyone was saying and only chimed in when she had more to add that hadn't been said already.
  7. Albert Gonzalez (vice mayor) seemed really checked out. He was always looking down at his laptop, barely spoke other than being asked to by Gillmore, and when he did, it wasn't very clear what his points were.
  8. I'm new to Santa Clara so I don't know much about the whole 49ers saga but even I can tell it was hovering in the subtext of the meeting.
  9. I think I picked out at least a couple of the regulars. Interesting hobby. I might take it up when I retire someday.
  10. Sidewalks on San Tomas and Lawrence expressway were really the headliner of the evening. Hours of going around and around on this. Attached is a picture of a slide that a citizen brought into the meeting. This guy has been showing up for something like 8 meetings to get a chance to talk about this. And you know what? This was FASCINATING! And completely confusing. Here's what I think the issue is: the expressways were built by the county in the 1960s. Pedestrians are prohibited from using them. But in the 1990s, Santa Clara City passed a rule allowing pedestrians on the parts that go through our city. But there are still places that have signs saying pedestrians are prohibited, and parts of the expressways really are very unsafe for walking along (especially underpasses). I think everyone agrees that encouraging walking and biking is a Good Thing. And that Santa Clara is apparently broke and can't afford to put in proper bike lanes, sidewalks or trails. But! these are owned by the County. So we should make the county pay for them. Hey, there's a guy from the county here tonight - let's ask him about it (2.5 hours into the discussions). The county guy says that yes they will add sidewalks if the city asks for them nicely, and that bike lanes are planned but come from some special fund (from the state? not sure). So in the end, they voted to do more research and will have to discuss it again at a future meeting.
  11. Data centers didn't come up until 10pm. Started with a very interesting presentation by the city guy on how awesome they are and how awesome the city is at covering the demand for water and electricity. Charts with fun little clip art highlighting how green our electricity sources are. No charts that projected in to the future how things are likely to grow. Fancy architectural renderings of how beautiful the data centers will be. I learned about "purple pipes" which are a parallel water system that delivers reclaimed water for industrial purposes and lawns. That guy's pro-data center bias was a little embarrassing to see. He made it sound like the data centers are the reason Santa Clara has low utility bills, not the other way around. Data centers pay for soccer fields and parks and all sorts of lovely amenities.
  12. Makes me wonder: why can't the data centers pay for the damn sidewalks and bike lanes on the expressways?
  13. Suds Jain sliced right to the heart of the matter: if the city doesn't set a moratorium now, any current submissions will be able to claim to be grandfathered in and not have to follow any new regulations that the council might pass. There has already been a de facto pause in place since 2023 due to not having enough power to allocate to new data centers. The moratorium will make the current pause official.

Sorry this was so long. But I spent five hours of my life in that meeting, so just putting it here makes it feel a little bit worth it.

tl;dr: Suds Jain rocks. Kevin Park is a blowhard. Get the county to pay for proper sidewalks on the expressway. Put a moratorium on data centers until new guidelines can be written. And if you plan to go to a council meeting, bring snacks.

Food and Drink My favorite ramen spot - Ramen Hajime!

Post image
46 Upvotes

Hey everyone! Has anyone else noticed Ramen Hajime on Stevens Creek (right by Lawrence) switched up their hours? Anyone know what's going on with that? I hope everything is okay!

It's my go-to ramen spot in the Bay Area and I am a little sad I can't have it for dinner.

Definitely worth stopping by if you're craving a good bowl of noodles as the weather cools down.

I put together a quick write-up with more details, photos, and menu breakdowns on my site if anyone wants to check it out: Food2 Ramen Hajime Review (open to any feedback!)

DMV test instructor

Hi guys I’m somewhat familiar with driving but everyone in my family keeps saying I won’t pass. The written test was easy for me but this behind the wheel test is becoming a nightmare. This has affected my confidence to the point where I can’t focus on other stuff. If you know any good instructors pls pls let me know. I took classes from an Indian lady last year but she wasn’t a good instructor and very verbally abusive. I also discovered that her students usually fail so I stopped. If anyone had any leads I’d greatly appreciate it 🫶

Does anyone know what happened to the job fair today? Any upcoming job fairs in the area?

Hello everyone! I’ve had this job fair on my calendar for a while and signed up because I’m currently looking for work. I received an email saying it had been rescheduled, but when I Googled it, I couldn’t find any information confirming the change. Does anyone know what happened?

Also, does anyone know of any upcoming job fairs in the area? I know there’s a virtual job fair tomorrow, and I’m really hoping that one doesn’t get canceled as well!

For context, I’m available to work full-time and have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I’m particularly interested in opportunities in behavioral health, but I’m open to other positions as well while I continue my job search.

If anyone has any information or knows of any upcoming job fairs, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you so much!

Intermediate Korean Speakers / Exchange Friends

Is there anyone around a conversational level of Korean that would like to occasionally meet up for coffee and practice, or any native Korean speakers looking to exchange for English?

I've been in the San Jose / Santa Clara area for a year after moving back to the US from Korea, and have tried to maintain my Korean level, but most of the classes and people I meet around here are focused on the beginner level. Not dumping on anyone, I was there too, but now I can carry a lengthy conversation and would like to keep pushing myself!

I tried the Korean language MeetUp group, but my application has been pending for a month so I assume it's not active.

I'm 35M, any gender and (adult) age would be welcome though it'd be nice to find folks who are around the same age.

New to South Bay, looking to build a local friend group!

Hi everyone! I (25M) recently relocated back to California (went to school in San Diego) for work after spending a few years in the South. I am new to the Bay Area, living in Santa Clara, and am looking to meet new people and build relationships out here :)

I'm into bass/dubstep music, lifting, hiking, cooking and baking, NFL/NBA, and hunting down good taquerias, new coffee shops, and West Coast IPAs.

I am pretty outgoing but it can be difficult to find people on the same wavelength in the new city. My Instagram is the same as my Reddit handle. Feel free to shoot me a message if you’d ever want to hang out in a group or individual setting!

News 🐾 Meet Zelda — Looking for Her Forever Home! ā¤ļø

Zelda is a 3 year old 20-lb rescue sweetheart who’s been with her foster family for the past two months. Once she feels safe and builds trust, she’s incredibly sweet, affectionate, and loving. She adores cuddles, belly rubs, toys, sunbathing, and spending time with her favorite humans!

She’s fully house-trained, walks beautifully on leash, and is very well-behaved when left home alone.

Zelda can be fearful and reactive toward unfamiliar people, so she needs a patient, experienced adopter who understands reactive dogs and is committed to helping her build confidence through positive reinforcement training.

She would likely thrive in a calm, adult-only home as the only pet, as her compatibility with other dogs and children is still unknown.

ā¤ļø Zelda has so much love to give. She just needs someone willing to give her the time and understanding she deserves!

šŸ“ SF Bay Area

🐶 Interested in adopting Zelda?

Please complete the adoption application through Legacy of Love 805 and be sure to specify Zelda as the dog you’re interested in:

šŸ“ž Or contact the rescue at (805) 833-1951.

Please share to help this sweet girl find her forever family! ā¤ļøšŸ¾

In a crowded mayoral field and two city council races, Santa Clara’s contentious relationship with the 49ers – and the team’s exceptional spending on the race – have stood out as key issues in this November’s election, even as the city struggles withĀ maintaining vital infrastructure projects.

Question about Santa Clara DMV driving test

Post image
20 Upvotes

I’m taking my test next month at the Santa Clara dmv. I was told that when exiting the parking lot I’ll be told to go into the furthest lane. Am I allowed to just drive across the center turn lane? And then if I’m told to turn left up at El Camino, go into the turn lane properly? I know you’re not allowed to drive in a center turning lane for more than 200 ft. But I can’t get a solid answer on whether or not I can drive across one.

I’m super nervous for my test, the whole route they apparently will take me on feels so confusing! I’ve been seeing a lot of mixed reviews saying either it’s super easy and on quiet, simple streets, or that it’s very stressful and takes me on many confusing busy streets. My instructor won’t take me over there since they aren’t allowed to have people practice on the routes :/

Edit: I’ve now learned this isn’t where I’ll be exiting anyways lol. But for the test lane exit onto Granada, it still has a center turning lane, so my question still stands. Do I just cross over it after making sure it’s clear, (like in my drawing) or am I supposed to turn into the lane, then merge over into the right lane?
