Local art classes?

Hello! I’m new to the area and am looking to branch out and make some friends! I’m hoping that anyone could provide me some insight on local art classes! I have taken a pottery class already. I’m hoping for a sewing or painting class. Thank you all in advance!

Piercer recommendations

Can anyone with experience having a piercing gauge sized up recommend somewhere to get it done at? I haven’t done any piercings since moving here so I’m looking to know where’s a good spot

seeking a real-life friend in the area

i (32f) moved back here a couple years ago (grew up in waterford) and work remotely — finding real-life friends has been a *task,* but here i am, shooting my shot on this sub. i can carry a conversation, i have unique interests, and i’m the proud mom of a very sweet pup. comment or message me if interested — there’s loads we can do in the area (coffee, thrifting, book stores, etc.).

p.s. can you believe this weather?!

p.s.s. what’s your favorite, uniquely michigan thing to do?

AT&T Fiber Internet

We currently have WOW and the internet continuously cuts out or lags. Looking to switch to AT&T fiber and would like your opinion. I’m tired of watching the circle in the middle of my screen. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Not Surprised Camelias Closing

Am I the only one genuinely not surprised and more than okay with Camelias closing? Never once had good service there and the food was mediocre for the price. Literally felt like the staff didn't want us there the last time we went so swore it off.

Edit: Spicy/Chile Margs were the highlight for me, but service always prevented me from getting a second.

Trying to find the best restaurant in Royal Oak

I had asked on Facebook before this trying to find the best restaurant here. I really haven’t been impressed with anything locally so I’m trying to crowd source opinions. Just reading a bunch of comments gets boring and I didn’t really want to count by hand so I put together a bracket to decide the best.

696 highway tunnels open?

This is kind of random but growing up there were these tunnels on 696 near the Detroit zoo and I know parts of the highway over there are closed but I was wondering if the tunnels are still closed or not. I’m planning on going out that way soon and I want to see the tunnels because the lights are super pretty! Thank you if you have any info!

Anyone have any suggestions of fun bars to go to Halloween weekend? RO or ferndale

For context we’re 29. Yes, I know we can just walk around and pop into any bar, which is probably what we’re gonna do. But just wanted any suggestions if anyone’s been to somewhere particularly fun. Also, has anyone been to the tequila blue ticketed event? Is it fun?

RO with kids

I’ll be moving to RO from out of state with my wife, 2 kids, and 2 pets next month. My wife and I are originally from Michigan, but my kids have only lived outside of it. I woke up last night in a panic about RO potentially not being a good spot for them. I was reading posts about people saying RO is great to live in your 20s but then move away when you settle down with kids. RO having no buses for schools etc.
Can ya’ll put me at ease that RO is fine for my kids, the schools, the neighborhoods, etc. It’s been a long time since myself and my wife have been in MI too so we’re a little out of touch.

EDIT: Thank you all for the feedback. It sounds like we are in good hands 🙌🏻

Is this necessary?

Let me start by saying, I understand the area between the sidewalk and street is technically "not mine" and is the city's property/public right-of-way.

However, we live in a dense residential area, no businesses, and our right-of-way is all grass and not located on a curve or anything where having a sign in the right-of-way would pose any threat to anyone driving or walking. In the 10 years living here, the city has never touched the right-of-way once (obviously, why would they it's not their concern) and is only used for dogs to poop on.

We had a normal size political sign for the upcoming Nov elections in our right-of-way. There is landscaping on the opposite side of the sidewalk that would somewhat obscure the sign so we placed it in the right-of-way. We have seen other houses doing this and have also seen houses set up Halloween decorations in the right-of-way.

We have moved the sign but my question is: does the city really need to be enforcing this for something that is obviously temporary? Or did somebody complain to the city which is why the notice says "complaint no." and not "violation no."? If somebody did complain, does the city really need to follow through with the complaint in this case?

Seems pretty ridiculous honestly. Just wanted to hear the community's opinion on the matter and if this is an isolated incident or if anyone else has experienced something similar. Also, this is the first notice we received and it is dated 10.07.26 but they want the violation fixed by 09.16.26.

Strange question but has anyone else noticed that there are way more acorns than usual this year?

Parts of my neighborhood are basically flooded, it sounds like it’s hailing outside. I don’t remember it being like this the past few years.

Rochester road construction.

Anyone else feel like the construction on Rochester road between 13 and 14 has gone on unusually long? I feel like the Chinese build skyscrapers in less time than it is taking to do sewers and concrete on a mile of road. I feel terrible for the businesses on that stretch. For me it’s just an inconvenience.

13 Mile Traffic

We are looking at buying (currently renting) and are considering a place on 13 mile (across from Starr Jaycee Park). Currently located on 12 mile near Crooks and absolutely hate the traffic and attempting to back out of the driveway is challenge. Is 13 mile any better or should it also be avoided? Good with some cars but would not like the chaos that is 12 mile.

Fellow cyclists, be on the lookout for an aggressive driver in a tan Chevy pickup.

At around high noon today I was cycling North on Main St., a two lane road with a shared lane in the right. Some maniac in a tan Chevy pickup (not sure about the model, I think it was a Silverado HD) almost rammed into me from behind.

I typically look over my shoulder every few seconds to check for traffic behind me. When I saw this guy he was coming in hot. I knew right away he was going to be trouble so I decided to just keep pedaling and focus on the road. Less than three seconds later this guy hits the gas, barrels down the road, and comes right up behind me. Next thing I know he is tailing me for about 10 seconds less than a foot away and wouldn't back off. He kept gradually getting closer.

When I came up near Lincoln he got in the right turn lane and started jawing at me. Wasn't sure what he said because his window was up but based on reading his lips I think he told me to get on the sidewalk then called me a homophobic slur. I'm bisexual btw and that really didn't sit well with me. I asked him "what's your problem?" He screamed "fuck you" and I replied with a middle finger then he pealed down Lincoln and that was the end of it.

I don't know who this guy is but I think I may have had some run ins with him before. Heavy set white male, thin short brown hair, and clean shaven.

Now before any angry motorists come at me on here I want to make it clear that I did nothing wrong. I was riding in the right lane on Main St., which is a shared lane as indicated by the painted symbols. I was going an average speed of 13-15 mph. But either way I was doing a completely legal activity and there was no reason for him to come at me that way.

Also, tailgaiting a cylist is illegal. Under MCL 257.657, cyclists on public roadways are granted the same rights and responsibilities as the drivers of motor vehicles. Because they share these identical legal rights, tailgating a bicycle violates Michigan’s "following too closely" law (MCL 257.643), which mandates that drivers must maintain a distance that is "reasonable and prudent" based on current road conditions and speed.

And don't forget that we have a three foot passing law. MCL 257.636, 3 feet of space when passing a bicycle. This distance is measured from the widest part of the vehicle (like the side mirror) to the widest part of the bicycle.

Source: https://lmb.org/bike-mi/michigan-compiled-laws-mcl-bicycles-and-the-law/

To the driver: if you are reading this post consider this a warning. You're lucky I forgot to charge my GoPro battery before going on my lunch ride. Otherwise I would have shared your face and license plate on here so fast it would make your head spin.

Do not harass, intimidate, or threaten someone with your 5000 lb truck. It's not going to kill you to have a few seconds added to your commute to share the road. People like you kill people like me every year. Next time I will call the police and take you to court.

Oh and another thing, homophobia isn't cool. That was completley uncalled for. Don't be an asshole.

Stay safe out there my fellow cyclists and watch out for this aggressive moron and others like him.

Upflush Toilets

Anyone have experience installing an Upflush toilet? What are your experiences with working/living with them? We were looking to add a bathroom in our basement and that route would save us a ton over digging up concrete and what not for a traditional install, but not really sure if it’s worth the savings.
