This question has been asked more times than one can possibly imagine. “How do I age this or that.” Wear it

Public Service Announcement Ask before you buy and give real constructive criticism

About two years ago I got into reenacting and started doing World War I German and Civil War. I’ll be straight up my kits were incredibly farby. I didn’t talk to anyone before I bought it. I didn’t reach out to units before I bought it.

That’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned: ask before you buy. Talk to a unit. Message people on Facebook, Instagram TikTok Reddit anywhere. Nine times out of ten, if you buy first and ask later you are gonna be spending twice more money.

I’ve also noticed a big problem across social media. When someone posts a kit that isn’t great, a lot of people just comment things like

This has a lot of work to do

This is trash

That’s it no explanation

If you think a kit needs work PLEASE say why

For example

“This impression needs improvement because the bread bag is incorrect for the time period, and the ammo pouches are ww2 style. Feel free to shoot me a DM so I can show you where you can replace some things.”

That helps. Just calling someone’s kit trash doesn’t

If it’s just for Halloween or a costume, who cares? A WWI uniform with a WWII helmet for Halloween isn’t a big deal. But if you’re serious about the hobby authenticity does in fact matter.

If you do ACW I strongly suggest looking up some of the campaigner Fb pages those guys will help you guide in the right direction. Try and reach out to less mainstream media if you really want a good accurate impression. Words are money in this hobby

If you’re in a unit they should be helping you steer in the right direction. And if they aren’t then you should consider leaving them and finding yourself a better group of guys. I am thankful that my unit actually has helped me steer clear and saved me probably 500 bucks.

Most of us start out rough and I think the hobby would be 100 times better if we all followed what I just wrote.

Sorry for the rant I just think people need to know

Work In Progress My First Impression

Post image
6 Upvotes

A few months ago I bought a dress uniform for about $25. I’ve decided that it’s going to be my first impression. I’m not a reenactor but the hobby looks really fun and I don’t wanna sink the 2-3k into it to set up a full outfit with a M43, Rifle, and all the combat gear.

It’s not 100% accurate, the main thing Visually is the lack of infantry piping on the garrison cover and the lack of a tie and DUI’s (I have them coming). Besides that are minor issues, the Infantry discs one is screwback and one is clutch back, the CIB and the Markmsanship badge are both Post-War Non Sterling and the ribbon bar is modern. I’m happy with it though

Looking For Groups Looking for a group in New England?

Hello! I’ve posted here before but I’m 16F and I’m looking for a reenactment group in the New England area (like Massachusetts/Rhode Island or around there) that would let me participate in battles as a medic?

Just to be clear, I mean letting me portray a standard male medic, not a nurse. I would tuck my hair up and whatever else is necessary so I’m not recognized as a girl.

I’ve never reenacted before but I’m happy to learn. I’m hugely into ww2/war history in general, so no issue there, I’m just not terribly familiar with gear and standard reenacting procedures so I’d need to learn there.

I’d be open to German or American groups, I’d just like if there were some people somewhat around my age.

(Also to clarify- I absolutely recognize and appreciate women’s roles in ww2. I find them really interesting and love to learn about them. I just want to be able to take part in the battles!! I would love to do a red army impression of an infantry woman or sniper but I’ve never heard of or seen any groups doing that, at least locally)

Looking For Advice A question on German mountaineer soldiers

Hällo! I have a question on what a pre-ww1/pre-unification gebirgsjäger uniform would look like. would it be similar to that of the ordinary troops but just heavier since they’re on mountains? or would it be an entirely different uniform?

Looking For Advice At The Front Ammo Pouch Question

Hello,
I’m wondering if At The Front Kar98k black ammo pouches are worth it. Ive watched some reviews on them saying they are not very good at all, mainly some leather being thin, the pebbling too big, and the leather strip on the inside being to thick. Plus i heard the leather wasn’t too great and it looked so-so. But, these reviews were from a couple of years ago. I think they updated the pattern since because when I checked their website, the pebbling looked smaller and they looked pretty decent. I’ve heard cocomomo77 on Ebay has the best on the market but those are $80 plus $20 shipping, i’m fine with the price if they are as good as people say but I was wondering if any of you guys had input on this topic.
Thank you very much!

Looking For Advice WW2 "Stahlhelm" intermediate sizing question

Question being, my head size is in between 59 and 59.5, so I wanted to ask if I should still get a size 66 shell (in the case my head IS 59.5 cm), as I haven't been able to find any feedback nor had the chance to try it myself (yet).

Ive been on the hunt for the best websites that sell GWOT gear. Ebay has been a tad bit dry as of recently, and wonder if there are any other websites that sell similar stuff.

In this attempt to push back the enemy line and gain control of a key airfield, I joined an Armored Infantry Division in a Half Track. While approaching, a tank next to us took heavy fire and both our vehicles were subsequently destroyed. Luckily we were able to make the dash to the tree line and down an embankment to radio in and wait for reinforcement. Once there was covering fire, we were able to exit the tree line pushing closer towards the German front line. After our tanks were able to lay down heavy fire, we began the infantry assault with many other units, taking over the airfield.

These photographs were captured during the 3rd battle of the weekend at the American Heritage Museum in Hudson, Mass, for Battle For The Airfield 2026.

Looking For Advice MACVSOG use of tiger stripes

Hi reenactors,

I used to do ww2 reenacting when I was younger and now, though I’m not putting together a full kit, I’m trying to piece together some gear for a macvsog “impression”. I’m using Halloween as my excuse to start collecting again but I’m running into some research trouble and I’d like to be as accurate as possible for the little that I put together.

I have a web set that consists of M1956 gear (suspenders, ammo pouches, canteen covers, etc) and a T56 chest rig (very commonly worn by macv) but I’m still looking for uniforms to go with it. I like the look of tiger stripes and I know that macv used them but does anyone know any pictures of macv using all 3 (m1956 web gear, t56, tigers)? I know seals more extensively used the tiger stripes but I don’t think they wore the t56 piece or at least I’ve found no pictures of it.

Any info helps- again I’d like to be as accurate as possible, if someone could tell me what specific camo goes with which unit or provide photos that could help me connect some ideas that would be great.

Looking For Advice What are some cool battalion patches I can wear on my WW1 British uniform?

Hi guys
I’m new to the reenacting world and I’m creating a British WW1 uniform to LARP for Halloween and just whenever I feel like it. Anyway, I’m getting my enlisted 1902 pattern tunic and I am figuring out how to do all the decorations. One thing I want to know is what are some cool battalion patches I can make from felt? I would prefer to have patches with triangle or diamond shape. If you guys can help I would appreciate it so much; I tried googling and using Wikipedia for a while but I didn’t have good luck. Thanks.

Work In Progress King Childeric I of the Franks, 5th century.

Ignore the saucer brooch, I had to borrow one to hold the cloak for the photo (the proper piece will be eventually made). Anyway, here is me working on recreating the grave goods from King Childeric I's grave, the 5th century Frankish king buried in Tournai, Belgium. Unfortunately most of his known goods was melted down top centuries ago. This was taken at West Stow in Suffolk, England three weekends ago, as a guest of Wulfheodenas.

Credit goes to the amazing Ruben Terlouw (Woedans).

Looking For Advice Bespoke Prussian Uniform

Hi! Looking for tailor recommendations in Germany who can do bespoke Uniforms (Waffenrock and Hose, etc) for 1870-1914 era. Looking for officers uniform for Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 76 und Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 16. I have original Pickelhauben for both, but if there are people who can do replica Pickelhauben, that would be especially helpful. Thanks!

Looking For Advice Any shops for small piece clothes ? (WW1)

Hey ! Sorry if I use the wrong flair.

I’m looking to do ww1 French late war (1916-1918) reenactment, more specifically the medic part (service de santé) but I realized something problematic… I’m small (around 170 centimeters and 50 kilograms).
Most of the great coats and shoes are too big for me and I would want to know if I could have an other option before possibly going to a tailor to shorten then.

Looking For Advice Thoughts on M43 paratrooper trouser reproductions

What are people's thoughts on the different M43 paratrooper trouser repros out there?

The ones from At The Front look the best to me. The Kay Canvas ones from Soldier of Fortune have the cargo pockets too low in my opinion and the new batch from What Price Glory seem to have very intense contrasting colors for the pockets and straps (straps look yellow!). But I haven't seen any of them in person yet, so I don't know.

Does anyone have thoughts on the fit, color, construction?

Help guide me towards the better purchase :)
