Is it fair to ostracize a band for not “showing out”?

My partner is a musician in a local Portland band that plays heavier music, and has been active for the last 5 years (probably more).

They have a decent following (>3k followers on Instagram, usually a pretty good turnout to shows), frequently do gigs in Portland and Eugene, and have toured through the PNW.

My partner recently reached out to a local booker (also around 3k followers) to put together a show, and was told via a much less professional choice of words that they wouldn’t work with him because his band doesn’t “show out”. They also basically said that if his band had any pull, they wouldn’t need to email a booker and could put it together alone. To give context to the vibe of the email, their first two words in response were “lol no.”

He works long (10-12hr) shifts 6 days a week and still practices with his band a minimum of twice weekly, then spends the rest of his time practicing alone or booking venues, coordinating with other bands, writing songs, etc. It seems like he’s never NOT working on music. I don’t fully understand the idea of “showing out”, but it sounds like they’re saying the band does not attend enough local shows to be considered active in the community.

From my perspective, I just can’t understand the reasoning. My boyfriend’s entire band is full of genuinely kind people who work extremely hard to balance full time work with making and performing music. They’re extremely supportive of the bands they’ve played with and are constantly listening to music from smaller bands they haven’t. I don’t see how it’s fair to criticize their lack of presence at other gigs when the majority of them end up needing to take days off of work just to perform. They’re all barely scraping by financially but still put forward their best efforts for the love of music, as are most artists in the community.

In your opinion- what do you think of declining a request to book because they don’t attend many shows from other bands? Is it an asshole move to perform music and expect people to show up while not showing up to gigs from other bands? Even if they don’t have the time or money?

Looking for monthly band rehearsal/storage space in Portland

Hey! My band is looking for a rehearsal space in Portland that we could rent on a monthly basis. Ideally somewhere we can:
Keep our amps, drums, and other gear stored between practices
Practice 1–2 times a week
Have reliable access without needing to book by the hour every time
We don’t need anything fancy at all. A dedicated rehearsal room, shared warehouse space, basement, garage, studio, etc. could all work as long as it’s secure and okay to make noise.
We’re hoping to keep it reasonably affordable and would be open to sharing a larger space with another band if the setup makes sense.
If you have a space, know someone who does, or know of any buildings we should reach out to, please let me know! Thanks :)

Mr Ladybug Seeks Bands for Upcoming Show

Mr. Ladybug is looking for two more bands to share a bill next month.

We’re a more rock-oriented band, not especially heavy, but neither are we yacht rock. It can be a bit limiting to list genres so check out this demo playlist. If you think your band might be a good match for a bill, send me a DM with a link to socials, demo, something and we’ll talk.

The show is at The Common Loon in SE Portland on Nov 20. We'll be treating it as a bit of an EP release party for us too.

Halloween Reggae Rock at Jack London Revue! 🎃 Midnight Cove + Steve Miller of The Rusty Frets

Hey Portland music lovers!

You might recognize the name, but probably not THIS Steve Miller! 😆

I'm the Bigfoot-stomping, guitar-slinging frontman of Central Oregon's The Rusty Frets, and I'm heading to Portland for a special solo performance this Halloween!

I'll be joining Midnight Cove at Jack London Revue on October 31st for a night of reggae rock, good grooves, and Halloween festivities!

There's also a costume contest, giveaways from Oregrown Industries, and drink specials planned for the evening.

I've spent years playing music throughout the Pacific Northwest, and one of my favorite things about it has always been connecting with other musicians and music lovers.

I'm excited to spend Halloween in Portland, meet some new faces, reconnect with old friends, and share some music with you all!

If you're into reggae, rock, ska, or just love supporting independent live music, come say hello!

October 31st | Jack London Revue | Portland

Doors at 7 PM | Music at 8 PM | 21+

Anybody here familiar with Midnight Cove? Looking forward to sharing the stage with them!

Much love! 🤘🎶

Doomgazing in Portland - Looking for bandmates again

Yes, I've been here before. And yes, I've had some success. But now I'm back to the drawing board and trying this again.
I've tried making this a record-at-home project for some time, but I lack the time and motivation to do everything myself.
So, that said, let's give this another shot:

What I have:
Songs, amps, equipment, drive

What I don't have:
Other people, a space

Last project made it to one whole live show before it imploded.
Let's talk influences:
Spotlights, Sleep/High on Fire, Frayle, Russian Circles, Pelican, Jesu, Neurosis, Yob, Faetooth, Blackwater Holylight, Thou, Kowloon Walled City, Bongripper

Vocals:
Ethel Cain, Chelsea Wolfe, Emma Ruth Rundle

You may have reached out to me before. If so, do it again (if still interested). I'm ready to make this happen.

CLARIFICATION:

Some of you have listened to the demos and think its more on the 'doomy' side than 'gazey'. For those four songs, yes you are correct. Not all are this way, but those are. The initial idea was for us to have a very dark, doomy sound with me providing heavy riffs and my guitar counterpart layering over the top with lots of atmosphere, pedals, and textures. And we were doing a really good job of that before it all went south.

Established Hard Rock/Nu Metal band seeks Bass Player

🎸 ESTABLISHED Hard Rock/Nu Metal BAND IS LOOKING FOR A BASS PLAYER🎸

We’re looking to bring the right person into an established band as our BASS player and we are searching for someone who shares our passion, work ethic, and commitment to music. YES we a lot of music to send you…send an DM and we’ll send you a link.

We want to keep as busy as possible next year with writing and recording, playing shows and making music videos. We are looking for someone who is ready to be an active, dedicated part of an established band with goals of continuing to grow. We are not looking for someone who does this as a hobby or just to say you are in a band. Also we don’t want anyone who is in a bunch of other bands. This will be your top priority.

🎸 WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

* The ability to learn and pick up songs by ear fast.
* Strong bass playing abilities and the confidence to deliver consistent live performances.
* A creative mindset with an interest in contributing to songwriting and developing original material.
* Ideally, someone between their late 20s and early 40s. Sorry no exceptions.

* Must live somewhere between Portland and Salem area as we do practice once a week.
* Professional-quality equipment suitable for rehearsals, live shows, and touring.
* Reliable transportation.
* Be in great health as being in a band and traveling can put you in some very challenging conditions
* A strong work ethic, dependability, professionalism, and the ability to collaborate as part of a team.
* A responsible lifestyle free of substance-related issues that could interfere with band commitments, rehearsals, performances, or touring.

We all have full-time jobs and understand that life comes with responsibilities outside of music. However, we also believe that when you commit to being part of a band, you need to be willing to put in the time, effort, and dedication it takes to make it work.

We want someone who is genuinely passionate about playing music, creating something meaningful, performing live, and being part of a team that is motivated to take things to the next level. We’re not just looking for someone to fill a spot; we want someone who is invested in the future of the band and shares that same drive.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, or you know someone who might be a good fit, reach out to us in our DM and I will send you music links.

We’re happy to answer questions, talk about the opportunity, and arrange a time to meet up and jam.

We have plenty of music available to send over to anyone interested. Just shoot us a message, tell us a little about yourself, your experience, and what you’re looking for in a band, and we’ll go from there.

SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY.
