ELECTION 2026 Why a vote for Opportunity could cement National's reign for 3 more years

As news emerges this morning that Starship has had to defer cancer surgeries due to a nursing shortage, the impacts of the right wing Coalition couldn’t be clearer

Qiulae Wong is a positive Ambassador for the Opportunity Party (TOP). A former KPMG management consultant, Wong is the daughter of Margaret Malcolm, who was a Senior Advisor to the National Party’s Judith Collins. Wong’s husband is a senior executive of a medical AI (Artificial Intelligence) software company.

Wong comes across as affable, articulate and presentable As she told media this week, she’s had a lot of experience in advocacy and public presentation, and it shows.

When TOP, or OP as they now like to be called, advertised for a leader through Seek in 2025, Wong emerged as the successful candidate.(Rumour hsa it that Wong reached out to Opportunity directly after receiving a newsletter in the email, learning about their search for a leader)

Opportunity under Wong is doing very well. Recent polls show them as the potential “Kingmaker” in Aotearoa New Zealand politics, coming in between 5-8% in recent polls.

Without a doubt, Opportunity have successfully split votes from the left, making the left vulnerable to a loss to National, NZ First and ACT this term.

Whether the left or right win Government, ultimately depends on the relative success of Labour or National, which although weakened, are still the country’s major parties.

And while Wong has kept her past political affiliations close to her chest, the party’s Deputy Leader made clear last month that he would vote National in 2026 if he wasn’t part of OP.

Officially, Luxon has ruled out working with Opportunity, but this is more of a cynical strategy to retain National voters and keep them away from Opportunity. It’s been successful in that regard.

But as Wong herself recognises, Luxon will pick up the phone should Opportunity cross the 5% threshold and they are needed.

And Wong makes clear that she will phone Luxon directly and quickly if National wins the most seats, in order to try to form Government with them.

As Wong told Pat and Chewie on BHN, Wong will do her best to form Government with whomever wins the most votes* on election day.

\Note:* A day later, Wong updated this to which ever party wins the “most seats”, and says she will only wait for special votes if the win is marginal.

Readers of Mountain Tūī will remember that National’s new voter disenfranchisement laws this year passed under urgency, are expected to help National win 2 more seats than usual.

That’s because over 75% of NZ’s special votes are pre-enrolments and special votes inevitably favour the left. The total number of special votes in NZ surpassed ACT & NZ First total votes by ~100,000 if we use 2023 electoral numbers - i.e. it is a large proportion of the votes that is in the scope of this law.

Readers can also see Chris Bishop admit this in the video clip above.

i.e. National’s laws will disenfranchise tenss of thousands of Kiwis but could reliably help National to win the 2026 election by boosting their results by ~2 seats.

On a day like today, when New Zealand’s Starship hospital is delaying cancer procedures due to the ongoing public health and nursing crisis under this Government, my message to you could not be clearer:

Our top priority should be to remove the current right wing Coalition government.

Whether it has been this Coalition:

Can Aoteraoa New Zealand afford 3 more years of this Coalition government?

If your answer is no, my personal recommendation is do not vote for Opportunity.

And if they do make the threshold, which is still very likely, and they form a part of a new Government, hold them to account and remember, it’s the easiest thing in the world to be a minority party and make big promises that appeal to a minority.

If you don’t believe me, just ask Winston Peters.

Happy Election 2026 and remember, enrolment closes this year on 25 October, 2026.

Whatever the result, be well and happy, Whanau.

My analysis here

Over and over... I keep getting told that Top is some sort of left-centre alternative to Labour. It's not. It's just light Blue. They're going to drop their votes at the feet of the neolibs, and this lie of "different but near Labour" needs to stop.

Social Issues The hand wringing and hysterics over the Greens and TPM meeting with gang members is so predictably overblown.

How can we expect to meaningfully address the systemic and generational issues that have contributed to the gang problem in NZ if we don't meet with those affected by its allure and engage with them as humans? Yes gang members are often repugnant people, but many are just lost men looking for purpose and leadership figures (albeit from an unhealthy place). Even Muldoon understood this and met with them personally, and as a result there was a significant decrease in gang members.

Gobsmacked by the news this morning from Starship having to delay treatment for children with cancer.

NZ has hit a new low.

😞

Its beyond me how any NACT1 MP/Minister can hold their head up.

ELECTION 2026 Why hasn't Chris Hipkins bought up misuse of urgency?

this is blatant evidence of national's disrespect for the public and democracy, but it seems he's not gone on the attack with this in any debates, despite humpty mcthumbface going hard on literally every scrap of shit he can fling at him even when its bullshit...

seems like a real missed opportunity (cough) to directly confront him and expose what he really represents to the public.

Thank you lee stuart.

PSA that this current coalition has cut funding for artists so they're doing it tough right now! 💔
So if you have IG and you haven't already yet- follow, like, repost, and/or share her video to support her. ❤️

PS, someone should ask National which artists they paid to make their song? 🤖
Or was it AI-generated and they can't pay any artists despite their millions of dollars? 💰
And how they plan to protect kiwi jobs from AI if they can't even pay people themselves for their work? 🔥

Also friendly reminder that this coalition can't seem to fund firefighters either. 🚒
Or nurses, so much that Starship had to suspend cancer treatment for kids. 🏥
Ferries... 🚣
Let me know what else needs to be part of the list? 💸

"They’re counting on you NOT to vote. ❌

So... You can't go to public because the wait lists are backlogged and ED is at 200% capacity. ACC covers less and less. Insurance covers less and less. So pay a shit ton for private? And if you can't afford that... Get fucked

ELECTION 2026 Will Luxon ACTUALLY not work with Opp post election?

As title says, initially I thought it was just a ploy from Luxon to try put a dampener on Opp support - but the way he has doubled down in the last few days is making me think that is less likely.

How do you guys think this will play out if opportunity make it to Parliament?

Just been looking for information on advance voting because of a possible surgery.
There’s virtually no information on how to get advanced voting papers on vote NZ. Looks like you have to contact the electoral manager for more information.
Is this another form of voter suppression?

Health Internal documents warn of food safety risk after MPI said none existed

Thumbnail rnz.co.nz

"RNZ revealed in 2025 that NZFS had not issued a fine, prosecution or recall for food with illegal levels of potentially harmful agrichemicals in at least five years, despite dozens of breaches."

"Every parent across the nation would feel a chill going up their spine reading the internal risk assessment stating their children were at risk from food highly contaminated with dangerous pesticides. Meanwhile the government agency responsible for protecting food safety was telling people that everything was safe. It wasn't," he said.

"What they don't make clear to people is that nine per cent of all the food samples had illegally high levels of pesticides, so one in 11 of the fresh food items in your shopping trolley were found to have illegally high levels of pesticide residues on them."

"Having the food safety agency located within a government mega-ministry committed to promoting agribusiness exports is a particularly problematic conflict of interest."

Norman also pointed to NZFS's move away from testing for glyphosate after finding a third of wheat samples had levels exceeding the limit allowed, some by 50 times, during 2015 testing.

Since then, NZ Food Safety has not tested for glyphosate.

"We don't know how much glyphosate is in our food because the regulators simply stopped testing it once they found very high levels.

The 2024/2025 report found six domestic food samples, including lettuce, spinach and beans breached the legal limits for ten different chemicals, such as Imidacloprid, which is banned for crop use in the European Union and UK and some US states, and Indoxacarb, Bifenthrin, and Acephate, which are banned in the EU and the UK."

ELECTION 2026 The outcome nobody is talking about...

What if this election results in a minority government?

Let's say TOP can't get what they want from either National or Labour?

This could be a better long term strategy for TOP because it keeps them clear of a potential bad term while allowing their own base to solidify based on their voting record.

If it's as close as the polls are suggesting. There's a real possibility that both blocks without TOP could be on the same number of seats. What happens then?

I'd be interested to hear all your thoughts!

Casual Chat Tonight's ASB Great Debate is far more entertaining and in depth than the regular televised debates

It's being streamed live on TVNZ+.

Greater level of debate and the major parties are actually with the minor parties (I don't like how the other debates split them up).

Shane Jones saying crazy nonsensical stuff in this case is hilarious.

Nicola Willis seething throughout.

Chlöe Swarbrick actually given an opportunity to break down the misconceptions of Greens policy.

Fun watch, I wish this was being broadcasted on TV
