Crashed in to a dog in Central Park this evening 10/14

First reddit post. I crashed my bike this evening in Central Park after colliding with a dog. The dog was off leash. The crash occurred in the designated bike lane (right side) on the East Drive down hill near the ice rink.

1) The dog is alright. He seemed ok. I encouraged the owner to follow up with vet in the morning. I hit the rib/side area and know impact injuries can be hidden.

2) I am alright. Banged up... shoulder, knee, foot. I'll feel it fully in the AM.

3) The bike is TBD. Left side impact. First glance/review shows damage to left lever, seat, pedal and all the usual points of impact in a crash. JS Cycles was still open, so I was able to drop off the bike for a proper review. Juan and Maria are the best.

Shoutout to the runners/pedestrians who stopped to check on me. You guys rule. Everyone was in my defense and very frustrated on my behalf. I appreciate all of you. It makes a shitty situation 10x better.

Shoutout to the cyclist who snagged a police officer to expedite that process and the few guys riding by who asked me if I needed any help with my bike or getting home.

The dog owner stuck around. He was a nice guy. He apologized. I asked him how his dog was. We were humans. No yelling, no screaming, no tantrums. We walked to a safer area and called the police. We filed a proper report and exchanged contact information. He will be covering repair and equipment costs after the bike is looked at. I hope he keeps his word.

The crash could have been worse. I recognize the climate in the park right now... Emotions are running high. I always dial down my speed in that down hill and prepare incase something is lurking around that blind corner. That decision saved my life.

I owned a dog for 8 years in NYC (lost him last summer) and live next to the park. I am on a waitlist for early 2027 for a pup (golden retriever). We utilized off leash hours in the AM for all of those years and followed the rules and were extra careful/leashed near all cycling pathways+entrances.

Bike: Newly built (3 months old) custom S-Works SL8. Enve pro 4.5s, THM aero bar, dura ace groupset. Took me a year of collecting parts, fitting, waiting for deals etc.

Dog: Some sort of Malinoise / Shepard K9. Pretty cool dog. Very well behaved.

End of story takeaways? Idk man... mixed emotions. Ruined a beautiful night and great workout. I hope the dog is OK. The guy was nice and honest hard to hate him. I am ok. I didn't even get that fired up (guess I'm getting older?). My new bike is banged up and it breaks my heart.

Thanks for listening

PSA NYPD checking speed with radar guns

Today at approximately 10:45am along 2nd Ave between 99th and 97th street I noticed an officer standing on the side of the bike lane aiming a radar gun at the bikers coming down the avenue. I assume they were looking for speeding ebikes but as we know they love to go after the easy targets. Been biking in the city over 10 years and have never seen this. I was on an ebike but I assume he didn’t bother me as I was going less than 20mph. Just thought I’d give folks a heads up.

I watched the video shown to rule-breaking cyclists by the police in London, and I’ll never ride through a red light again

I wonder if it'd be more effective for the NYPD to educate rather than just write tickets. Maybe the NYPD in conjunction with NYCC, Transalt, or some other cycling organization can set up a "Sin Bin" to promote good behavior.

PSA GWB Southwalk Opens today

Just saw it on the news...the walkways on the GWB are complete. This is a bittersweet day for me. I worked in Englewood Cliffs from 2006-2024. I used to run and bike across the GWB all the time. During Covid I was usually alone in the office, and its possible I might've spent very long breaks running across the bridge and riding into the park (I also explored all the trails in the Palisades). Running to Yankee Stadium was a favorite summer activity. So now, bikes will be on the north pathway, and runners on the south. Much safer for everyone. Sad I can't use it regularly, but wish you all good riding up 9W.

What's with the lack of helmets in Prospect?

Of course we're all well used to the average Citibike rider not wearing one, but I feel like lately I've been seeing an insane amount of people in full kit flying down the hill at like 30mph completely helmetless? Just last weekend I saw someone on a $13k S-Works nearly go over their handlebars to avoid a pedestrian (like a seriously scary potential crash) after being on their phone...yet the past four mornings she's still been there zooming around helmetless. I've noticed these folks are mostly solo but I guess that's bc group rides tend to require them? I don't care how much more comfortable it is or how good your bike handling skills are, you don't look cooler than everyone else, and you certainly won't with your head cracked open after something completely out of your control entered your path before you had time to react.

People are going to make their own choices and that's fine, but it does seem like an uptick...I guess I'm just surprised to see people who are clearly so invested in cycling (financially, if nothing else) making choices like this? What is going on?

Anyone lose a Mercier Kilo TT?

Found this on the curb in the trash last night. Had vines growing through the basket so I assume it sat outside for a while and was thrown out when an apartment was getting cleaned out. Missing a few parts.

If it's yours send a pic or convincing description and I can get it back to you.

Lost your phone on the Manhattan Bridge tonight?

• Upvotes

Was riding from Manhattan to Brooklyn on the Manhattan Bridge today around 5:50pm and saw a phone in a brown case in shoulder of the bike lane. Couldn't tell where/who it came from. But it didn't fall off the bridge, at least at that moment. So maybe it's still there if it's yours.

NYC cyclists: 3-min survey on bike servicing (+ $25 raffle) — help shape a new mobile mechanic service

Hey r/NYCbike — I'm a NYC cyclist building Cyclaa, a service where certified mechanics come to you for repairs and tune-ups, plus maintenance tracking so parts get flagged before they fail. Before building further, I'm running a short research survey to learn how NYC riders actually get their bikes serviced today. 3 minutes, and there's a $25 gift card raffle for respondents. Would love your honest answers — harshest opinions welcome in the open-text box: https://tally.so/r/ArPdMW

Looking for a shop with experience with China carbon wheels

Got into an accident recently(shoutout nyc delivery drivers), it’s a bit hard to source a rear wheel so looking at a new wheelset completely. Here are the details on my bike

135 x 10mm rear axle, center lock, 11 spd shimano free hub, disc brake, 700c, QR

Bike shop is recommending western wheels which are in the $600-700 range (Alloy) and I am looking at the Chinese carbon options that are significantly cheaper but I’m not sure if they’ll be a perfect especially as the bike shop doesn’t recommend them at all. The carbon brand is Tukus. Please share thoughts and experiences with the wheelset especially if you have similar weird dimensions that I do.

The front axle is 100 x 10 QR, center lock,disc, 700c

PSA PSA: Red light trap @ Stuyvesant and DeKalb

Hi all. I received a ticket for running a red light at this intersection last week and since then I continually see bicyclists being “pulled over” for this same bullshit at this selfsame location, often at night, when the usually quiet intersection is flat-out empty. Obviously I’m very angry about my ticket and it also makes me very angry to think of all the awesome and lovely and delightful bicyclists who are receiving tickets here when the Bedford Avenue shitshow is a few blocks away. So please be mindful here!

NY State Police Giving Criminal Summons?

Mamdani said no more NYPD policy of criminal summons for minor bike infractions. Today, New York State police gave criminal summons for purportedly riding on a sidewalk (in a plaza that had no curbs and was completely flat across).

Every article and post I see talks about NYPD giving these bike summons.

Anyone know why NYSP are suddenly getting in on it when NYPD is not supposed to do this?

No Unsanctioned Bikes or Unauthorized Activities on the Course

On Sunday, November 1, 2026, the New York City Police Department will close streets along the TCS New York City Marathon course. Closures begin early in the morning to ensure delivery trucks, ambulances, and New York Road Runners staff and volunteers can safely set up medical tents and water stations before the race start.

In coordination with various city agencies, FOR EVERYONE’S SAFETY, NO UNSANCTIONED BICYCLES OR UNAUTHORIZED ACTIVITIES WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE MARATHON COURSE WHILE IT IS CLOSED TO TRAFFIC—THIS INCLUDES DURING SETUP AND WHILE RUNNERS ARE ON THE ROAD.

Anyone attempting to ride or engage in any other unauthorized activity anywhere on the course will be diverted and removed by the authorities.

We ask that everyone adhere to this restriction.

Anybody know if this is just temporary and why they’d rip these out so soon after just installing them? They were so welcome for biking in central brooklyn.

Hit by a car that ran a red on my bike. Any lawyer recs/advice

Saturday i was riding in the bike lane in queens. Had the green. Car was speeding and ran the red. I was able to slow down enough and swerve away from the vehicle to not end up getting directly hit. Got hit at an angle around the front head light. But due to his speed it was still a pretty heavy hit. Got hit on the left hand side. Bike flew out under me and i landed on my hip and hand. Pretty banged up. Knee cut. Fracture in my wrist. The guy did stop, at which i let him know how angry i was at him. Called the cops. Have a witness who heard and saw the immediate aftermath. They took vid of it and sent it to me. The police did file a report, which ill be grabbing tomorrow. Currently going to docs to start the wrist healing process. Cast and such. Paying out of pocket for everything and I plan on getting reimbursed for medical by filing through his insurance once i get the report. I also plan on suing him. Any success stories of who i should contact for a good lawyer? Thanks.

NYC Century Early Bib Pickup - Do Me A Favor?

I’m traveling from out of town to visit family and ride the century and won’t be in town for the early bib pickup this Saturday. Would anyone who is doing early pickup be willing to grab mine as well? I’d be happy to meet you anywhere you like the Saturday before the actual ride to grab it from you, and I’ll bring you a water bottle/shirt/hat/something from my local bike shop as a token of my appreciation.

Send me a DM if you wouldn’t mind helping me out. Thanks!

Lehigh Valley, PA to NYC

I have always wanted to cycling to NYC from my doorstep thought it was an interesting idea. I am extremely out of shape and not the cyclist I once was but now I have a place to go as my brother moved to Manhattan. I hope I would be able go somehow gain the fitness over time and find the time to do it. Has anyone ever done a similar route? Is it too unsafe? Do you have to enter the city uptown or can you do it further downtown?

Bike Repair Virtual Hours (Part IV)

Ask your bike repair question and ideally send a pic. I'll let you know if the Time's Up Bike Co-op is equipped for the repair and if so, estimate the cost and time it takes. Then you know what to expect before coming to our East Village DIY repair workshop on Sunday/Wednesday. https://timesup.bike/

This is a mix of online advice (r/bikewrench) and the coop's tools/inventory/pricing. Nothing worse than buying a tool you'll only need once or making the trip only to find out we don't have the parts. In terms of my credentials and why you should trust me, I once watched a Park Tool repair video in full.

Example 1

  • You: My crank arm keeps coming loose, it has 3 chainrings
  • Me: Crank bolt probably needs to be tightened properly but if you rode it loose for a while, the interface might be rounded down and you'll need to replace the crank. In terms of repair... $2 and 30 mins to re-tighten existing parts. $7 and 1.5 hrs if you want to replace the crank with a used one and move chainrings over.

Example 2

  • You: Can I clean my bike?
  • Me: We have a garden sprayer, brushes, chain cleaner, degreaser and bike shine. Cost wise is $2 and will take you about 30 mins. We also have a heated ultrasonic cleaner if you want to do a deep clean on chain/cassette. Bring a ziplock bag large enough to hold them.

Example 3

  • You: I broke a spoke on my Lightweight Obermayer
  • Me: Sorry mate, we aren't equipped to handle bonded carbon spokes.

Disclaimer: All estimates are based on historical records of other people's repairs and not guaranteed for your specific case until you bring your bike in and a volunteer has eyes on it.
