Discussion Monstera Sticky Community Posts

Hi everyone,

We thought we’d start a regular series of sticky posts to get gather the knowledge and experience of the community - so we can learn from each other and be able to share our contributions with newcomers and future Monstera keepers.

The idea is that we choose a topic (see below on this) and sticky it up for a period of time and ask everyone to contribute what they know on the matter, share their experiences, and post up tips and advice on the subject too.

We can then all benefit from the community and use it to further expand our wiki.

Please feel free to suggest a topic here. I’ll kick it off soon with soil mixes.

We hope everyone will chip in and enjoy a good bit of community discussion.

Thank you all 🙏

Hi everyone,

Well it’s been a while since we’ve started a new community post so here one to keep us going again for a little while.

This time:

Nutrients and feeding

So share with the r/monstera community you feeding approaches, regimes, tips and advice!

Here’s some topics to think about:

  • Do you feed your monstera?
  • How often?
  • What do you use?
  • Do you use any other supplements?
  • Any tips to make feeding easier?

Looking forward to seeing all your great information!

Originally I got this plant from an outlet. 2 sad leafs.

Gave it good care, it finally outgrew my living room.

Before I gave it away to a colleague, I chopped of the 2 top leafs, put them in water to create roots, and after 2 months I put the plants in soil mix.

Happy to see the mature leaves still continues.

This one should turn out huge when i repot and add moss pole.

The newest leaf is 58 cm at current state and isn't fully stretched yet.

Very excited to see how this one turns out.

My Monstera Got Burned by My Grow Light
I use a SANSI 36W grow light and kept it way too close. Now the edge of its newest leaf is burned. I feel so bad….. Has anyone else experienced this?

After having to move this big dude to a room with worse light due to some too curious cats, it is now too tall for my house 🤣 and the 8 foot stake I bought for it. Its oldest leaf is yellow and dying and I know I need to chop and prop. I have purchased some stronger grow lights so I will hopefully be able to keep it happier and less leggy! My plan so far is to attempt a top cutting with 4 leaves and three middle cuttings with 2 leaves each. Plan is to allow the cuts to callus and then prop in water with a nice big grow light :) (of course I live in Canada with winter coming up so I don’t have great sunlight atm)

If you have any recommendations please let me know! I’m so afraid to kill it!

Plant Help Monstera advice

So this beautiful new monstera life has just sprung into my life and I’m mesmerised. It’s been enjoying its life on Bambi here propping it up. It used to live immersed in a bottle and now it’s been planted in soil, it’s really coming along. But is this legginess okay? It’s doing fine with the amount of soil and regular waterings. I need some advice on how to go from here if this plant decides to keep unfurling these gorgeous new leaves, as Bambi may not least too long under her weight.

Any tips? I just bought this new monstera and I know i shouldn’t repot it for a few weeks so it can acclimate to the new environment, but i’m wondering whether to repot it after that? I know we’re coming out of growing season but it’s still quite warm in the uk and my apartment is very warm in general, plus there are roots coming out of the drainage holes and I’m concerned about the current soil not having good enough drainage. Should I repot in a few weeks or leave until next spring?

Someone left this on the corner of the street and I’m not one to pass up a free plant. I mostly took it for the pot. It’s pretty black on some parts and I’m wondering if this is salvageable if I do major pruning?

I just bought this beauty today and it’s the first one that I’ve had I have a couple other Monstera’s too Thai con and a mint. It’s in a self watering planter that it came in. I just got it from Home Depot, but just wanted any advice ahead of time to keep her alive and well, and if I need to change the soil to a chunky mix if I could get advice on exactly what kind of chunky mix to go with and if I need to change the pot that it came in if self watering planters aren’t good thanks in advance!!

Miscellaneous Just did some repotting… 💰‼️

Context: this picture is about 6 months old. It’s grown a bit, but I haven’t taken any more recent pictures. And yes, she doesn’t look healthy in these pics because I still was learning how to be a monstera mamma. She’s very healthy now.

I’ve had my first monstera for 9 months now. No variegation, and she came from seed so she is still quite little and just grew her first aerial root!

So I noticed it looked like there’s multiple monsteras in the same pot, which I think is pretty common for young monsteras. However, I finally went to see if I could untangle them today, and it wasn’t just 2 or 3, but 6 different plants?!! that have been growing in 1 pot?!

I got her for $12, so I’d say that’s a hell of a deal. I didn’t take pictures of it all separated, but you can kind of see how many stalks were all crammed together. If I can add new pictures of her divided up through an edit, I will.
