Evie/Hourcar is officially dead

Today I'm mourning the loss of the Evie program from our streets.

I found myself with a 5k+ repair on my car in 2024, and opted to sell the car instead and try out this Evie service I'd seen around town. Evie got us around town for about a year and a half, and we just simply could not have existed as a car-free household without it.

It got us through a move from the Wedge over to Lyndale neighborhood, we'd cram the cars full of our stuff and drive them over to our new place.

I bought a bunch of skateboards strictly to have a way to pickup the cars that were farther away from home, and would skate over and grab an Evie, then pick up my partner and go grocery shopping, or we'd take it to a concert we intended to transit back from, or the multitude of random times I've had to jump in those green cars

While we became a one car household pretty recently, I never cancelled my membership, and have still used the cars to replace mine while it's in the shop, and as a transit replacement when I'm running late to an event in St. Paul.

I hope we can see some sort of resurrection of this service in the future!

Do you have any memories about Evie/Hourcar you'd like to share?

Ilhan Omar Deportation Attempt

The Trump administration is trying to deport Ilhan Omar. What can we do to support her at this time and make this more difficult for them? Should we be writing to legislators, should we write to the White House, should we protest, or is it time for something else?

Are we even a democracy anymore?

No Kings Minneapolis - Saturday - The Commons - 2-5 PM

Personally, I‘ve found No Kings to be little more than pep rallys for Democrats (who would be doing a lot more), but I plan to make this one. Musician (and MN 15 defendant) performing is a huge bonus.

Scavenger hunt in NE?

Hi friends,

Is there a scavenger hunt going on around northeast Minneapolis right now looking for odd local landmarks?

My parents are worried because roughly 10 strangers have taken photos of a specific part of their building at night in the last month. I want to be vague enough to avoid drawing more attention to them if possible, but they do have a piece of funky art on the back of their building, and the only reason I think so many people would be taking pictures of it is for like, a scavenger hunt or something?

They aren't worried about the building being cased for a robbery, but so many people randomly taking an interest in the back of their place has them confused.

Thanks y'all!

Thoughts on Constitutional Amendment Increasing School Funding on the Ballot for the Midterms

I'm wondering what everyones thoughts are on this. Sounds like the main thing is allowing the state to take up to 4.5% of the funds in the account and use it for school funding each year versus the current 2.5%.

I get that this would increase funding now but long term the investment won't grow as much at that usage rate so I'm not sure on the whole thing.

I know there are some other parts of it too that I don't understand but yeah I'm curious about what other people think about it and also what people think about the other changes in the amendment.

Here's a link for a little more info on the amendment although I think there is more to it then what is included here. Amendment)

Anyone take writing lessons at The Loft?

Maybe a bit of a longshot, just thinking about taking up writing again and wanted to see if anyone here had taken any classes and what their opinion was.

Also curious about the class size and the people, a huge mix of all ages? Mostly young? Mostly middle aged? Mostly older?

One friend speaks highly, but I wanted to query the power of reddit to see if there was a broader opinion, thank you!

How long would it take the annual payout of the current use rate of the Minnesota public school fund (~2.5%) to equal the annual payout of the proposed use rate of the Minnesota public school fund (4.5%)?

This is in regards to the proposed amendment around public school funding that will be on the ballot in Minnesota during the midterm election. Here's an article on the amendment.

I was trying to calculate this and I ended up getting 30.71 years. I honestly do not know if that is correct or not so wondering if someone else can run the numbers on this. The annual average growth of the fund has been 8% according to the article linked above.

When will the annual payouts of the current use rate of 2.5% and proposed use rate of 4.5% equal each other assuming that the fund continues to grow at 8% a year?

Favorite coffee shops in South Minneapolis?

Hi all, I'm in town for a wedding and to visit family for about a week and a half (though I'm also moving up here permanently in December). I'm based at my parents house near 44th and France -- are there any coffee shops near there that you can recommend? I'd like a place to go get some work done. Bounus points for good pastries...

Nice Place for a Monday Lunch?

My partner has a big presentation on a Monday morning. As they took the rest of the day off, I’d love to treat them to a nice lunch, but not sure what options I have on a Monday around the lunch hour. Presentation is in Minneapolis, so looking to stay around there or not too far out.

Woodworkers- where do you get S4S or S2S hardwoods?

I'm just a hobbyist and new to the area. No planer or joiner so I stick to the presurfaced stuff, and to be frank I have no interest in surfacing rough sawn lumber- I'd rather use that time building/assembling.

Menards has a decent selection for a box store, but it's still limited.

Follow up question, are there any local woodworking groups or Facebook pages?

Edit: appreciate the thoughtful and detailed information, everyone!

More people to be alarmed about way vulnerable adults are cared for in the state

It is deeply shameful and unacceptable that despite the wide array of services meant to support individuals with disabilities, these very systems continue to fail them state after state. Group homes, foster care facilities, and assisted living operations routinely exploit extremely vulnerable populations for financial gain, while state-level safeguards remain drastically inadequate or virtually non-existent.

What makes this issue even more disturbing is how rarely it receives the urgent public debate and policy focus it desperately deserves. In a developed nation with immense resources, the systemic neglect and commercialization of critical long-term care represents a major failure of our healthcare system.

Even under leadership generally viewed as progressive, such as Governor Tim Walz, we see a system where for-profit assisted living facilities must rely on funded political action committees (PACs) just to secure essential state budget allocations for the coming year. When basic care for human beings is tied to political leverage and profit margins, the system is fundamentally broken.

If even our most prominent leaders and reform-minded administrations are failing to confront and dismantle these predatory dynamics, it raises a critical question: why are we allowing our healthcare system to commodify disabled lives, and what will it take to implement true accountability and protection for our most vulnerable residents?

what would be a good idea or place to visit/ go to for a 3-4 hour chunk of time?

i'm currently in residential eating disorder treatment, but they are starting to let me have passes! I've done a couple of 1-2 hour passes where i've just stayed close to the sight or just gone to target or something, but now i'm getting longer passes and I need ideas for places to explore, preferably within 20 minutes of where i am. I'm not from here so i'm not sure where to go! I'm about 20 minutes west of downtown minneapolis. TIA! :)

Plumber needed ASAP

So my husband made beef stew last night and the pot cracked (crazy weird). He threw the stew down the disposal (pot was one of those heavy ceramic kinds). Which caused the disposal not to work. Got it running again but now dishwasher is emptying into the kitchen sink. He's not a handy guy and we've got our daughter and new grandson staying with us. Not having a working sink isn't going to work. We own a condo but haven't lived here long enough to know who to even call. Would love some recommendations!

Local cider source?

I'm in the mood to brew hard cider, but the brew shop where I used to get raw cider is out of business. Does anyone know where I can get 5 gallons of local, ideally unpastuerized, cider without spending an arm and a leg? My local co-op has half gallons for $9.99, and I'm hoping I can find it for a bit less.

Evening Open Skate

Okay I have researched for 40 days and 40 nights. ALL I WANT is to open skate at an indoor ice rink during the week (monday-thursday) in the evenings (after 5:00PM). This is Minnesota, there are so many rinks, there has to be an open skate during the week that isn't literally at 10:00AM. This is the only way i can get a handle on my mental health when winter comes. I will drive further than Minneapolis BTW. like id drive anywhere tbh. please someone help me.
