Horace and Pete

3rd watch and I'm still blown away at how beautiful this whole thing is. It's a shame that this isn't more well known but it's also cool that we have this semi-secret gem to revisit and share with anyone who wants to bother. I just can't say how much I love this crazy, sad, beautiful, funny peek into humanity. What a gift.

It's true. "You smell weird."

TIL about 2-Nonenal, the natural chemical found on skin that is responsible for the distinct “old person smell.” It typically appears once humans turn 40 and is described as musty, greasy, or grassy. It is not hygiene related, as it cannot be washed away with standard soap and water.

So did anyone else outright love ridiculous?

I read the negativity online, went in open minded and I was laughing til I cried. The whole thing worked for me, definitely stronger than his last couple in my eyes. What'd you think of it?

This podcast tries to criticize Louis but ends up glazing him harder than most fans. They overanalyze his jokes so much they give them deeper meaning. I went in hate-listening to their negative take and somehow came away appreciating his work even more.

I went into this hate-listening to their negative-leaning analysis, but in trying to criticize him, they glazed him harder than any fan could.

Hearing them discuss his audience--from the arthouse crowd to edgelords--and how such different groups regarded him as the best made me appreciate his art more. They described Louie as an avant-garde, form-breaking show that brought the language of cinema to television, while some fans triggered by this interview might see it as just a dark and funny show.

They even unpacked the joke about his dad in a nursing home as commentary on our dysfunctional relationship with mortality, the tragedy of losing dignity at the end of life, and the neglect and cruelty we tolerate in elder care. Like, I already loved the joke, but hearing them explain all of that gives me even more to appreciate.

Even their discussion of how his actions recontextualize his past jokes makes them sound, in a way, more uncomfortably honest. And it makes me wonder whether the cringe in his recent specials is an intentional shift--whether that discomfort might be part of what we want to feel, bringing us closer to the human condition.

They’re overanalyzing his work so much that their negative-leaning discussion somehow ends up making it sound even better. That’s a richer appreciation of his work than most fan praise ever offers. I don’t have to agree with their overall take to enjoy what they’re finding in it. I’m genuinely glad this podcast exists: it’s made me appreciate one of my favorite comedians even more.

Netflix additions

Maybe everyone already know this, but I just noticed that Netflix is now showing multiple LCK specials. In addition to the recent one, “Sorry,” “Sincerely,” and “Back to the Garden” are all available. There may be others, but those three popped up on my streaming home screen thingie.

Bobby, have you decided who you’d like to donate the book sales proceeds to?

We recently gave away hundreds of books after deciding to downsize. One of them was a paperback copy of Robert F. Kennedy’s 1960 book, The Enemy Within. I suspect I may have inherited it when the family helped pack up my late grandmother’s home.

A guy was leafing through it in our garage and I happened to notice this while he peered at the copyright page just inside the cover.

I’ve little doubt how that conversation sounded.

Nobody chooses tan. Nobody picks tan for their car
They give you tan
“Is that mine?”
“Yeah, it’s yours, fucking loser. Made it tan.”

They shouldn’t even make tan cars. It’s mean to make them. You look over, you see a guy in a tan car with dents all over it and a garbage bag for a window.

Dear planetary occupants,

I am pleased. In fact I am very pleased that my TV series LOUIE was included this week in the New York Times list of the 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century.

I feel proud and grateful that, now that the twenty first century is over, a survey of the television programs that were therein created finds mine in such good standing.

And I would like to remind you all that Louie is available exclusively on my website to stream for $10 per season or $30 for all five seasons. Same is available my self-created series, Horace and Pete, for 12.99

You can also get both of those complete series for $35. If you have never seen Louie before, you can watch the first episode on my site for free for a short period of time. It's right here on the home page.

You can also buy a pair of snow shoes. I just wanna make sure you know all of your options.

Love

Louis

Is Louie building a new set ?

Assumed after Ridiculous he was gonna take a break from stand-up for a while…
Rumors are he’s been working out new material at comedy cellar? Does he have a set schedule anywhere? What are the vibes?
How do I actually catch him doing stand-up?
