Greetings kin.
One matter of discussion that has come up a number of times is that of 3D printed models. This is a subject that 10 years ago, would have been cut and dry, no way no how, but things have changed a lot since then. Aside from the fact that there is no way for us to really police the matter, there are some very legitimate uses of it to advance the hobby.
With that being said; This hobby, for better or worse, is supported by GW. And as much as it pains all of us to pay for our grey plastic that gets more expensive every year, at the end of the day, we cannot condone unrestricted use of the technology for people to effectively mass produce models that are then not being purchased from GW or more importantly, your local FLGS. This is one of those "if everyone did it then..." situations that we need to be honest with ourselves about. We cannot tell you what to do, but we can control the content shown on this subreddit.
As such, this is the updated policy on 3D printed models presented to this subreddit. We are patterning this off of rules typically seen at tournaments and other events, as they seem to have hit what appears to be an acceptable balance between strictness and allowance. Please see new rule 7 of the subreddit.
Now, there's no way we can prove whether or not certain models are just 3D printed dupes, especially via pictures on a website. So people will likely get away with it, and if the models are assembled and painted well enough that we can't tell the difference, congrats on fooling us. What we will absolutely NOT tolerate is the sharing of pirate STL files on this board, as that leads to possible legal issues for us.

Greetings kin
As it is the start of a new edition, we have a large number of posts asking for advice on list building, as well as battle reports from early experiences, along with posting of said lists. This kind of Post is very welcome, and absolutely in the spirit of this subreddit.
With that being said, there is a near-spam situation that occurs regularly. I speak of the following copy-paste situation from army building apps. Lets say that one of the entries in a list is a unit of the humble hearthkyn warrior.
Which of the following entries is easier to read, keeping in mind that most lists have at least a dozen unit entries?
_______________________________________________________________________
10x Hearthkyn Warriors (100 pts)
• 9x Hearthkyn Warrior
5 with Autoch-pattern bolt pistol, Autoch-pattern bolter, Close combat weapon
1 with Autoch-pattern bolt pistol, Close combat weapon, HYLas rotary cannon
1 with Autoch-pattern bolt pistol, Close combat weapon, Magna-rail rifle
2 with Autoch-pattern bolt pistol, Kin weapons, Close combat weapon
• 1x Theyn: Weavefield crest, Autoch-pattern bolt pistol, Close combat weapon, Autoch-pattern bolter, Theyn's weapon
______________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
Formatting matters, and you will get much better feedback if your list is easier to read, rather than just being a copy-paste from whatever army builder you used. For the newer members of the kin, you will get much better feedback if you format your army lists to be easier to read. Conversely, a lot of people will just say "TLDR" if they see a direct export list, because reading through a copy-paste wall of text can be very difficult on phones or smaller screens.
The biggest thing you can do is reduce unnecessary equipment entries or things that automatically come with the unit. We don't need to know, for example, that a brokhyr iron-master has 3 e-cogs and an assitant with him with their own equipment, as there's no choice otherwise. For vehicles, we know that they have an armored hull weapon, and we know for example that sagitaurs have a heavy bolt cannon, that pioneers have auto-cannons, so this information isn't needed. It would however be very appropriate to indicate which main gun a sagitaur is carrying, and for hekatons, while the auto-cannon comes included automatically, the main gun and support weapons do present a choice, as does the scanner (as awful as the other choice is) so they should be mentioned.
In the above example, we already KNOW that all the warriors have a bolt pistol and close combat weapon, and we know that the special weapons replace the default gun, so it's not necesary to list them on a per-model-basis. We can tell at a glance the special weapons in the unit, the main gun of choice for the basic warriors, and the fact that the theyn has not given up his main gun for a theyn's pistol. The theyn has no choice but to be equiped with a weavefield crest, so it doesn't need to be listed as his wargear.
Beyond that, make sure you include army detachment, disposition, point costs for enhancements, things that are not automatically given. If you are attaching characters to units, indicate what unit they will be attached to rather than just leaving it up to intuition. Similarly, indicating which units go inside transports also makes lists easier to evaluate.
As stated at the beginning, we absolutely encourage posts about army lists seeking advice or reporting battle performance. Your post won't be removed by the mods if you don't format it to read more clearly, nor will you be warned or banned. This is just some feedback and advice to increase the chance of your post being regarded favorably by the community.
Have fun in the new edition all

hello all! actually getting around to actually painting up my Kin i spent so much money commissioning art, tyranid bits and have hit a snag (not my laziness and procrastination this time). I am looking for a good paint(s) that may be able to get a similar if not exact colour to the fleshy tyranid bits you can see on the guns in the art here (like the fleshy part of the skull on his shoulder or around the orange light on the gun if it wasnt obvious).
at one point i restricted this question to just citadel paints but i am not a paint mixing master and i also know there are better paints out there so....help a fellow kin out cos my knowledge and skill is lacking

Just got started with votann. By far the most fun painting out of any of my armies (salamanders and necrons and a sister kill team) planing I making an army around the ironkin steeljacks cuz they look cool. Just got a hold of the maelstrom box.

Finished my Hearthguard. All units are powered by multiple 0402 LEDs with scratch built lenses. Quite happy with the colour scheme but as usual excuse the painting itself.
Not sure what to do next. Any ideas?

Hey folks! I just got into Warhammer a few weeks ago and have been working on building my Votann combat patrol and an extra set of Einhyr hearth guard I got as a foot-in-the-door kit. I’ve been really enjoying it so far and had a ton of fun modeling them and building around the theme I chose. I’ve now gotten to the point where I am starting to paint my models however. I’ve never seriously painted much outside of the occasional art project in high school and really don’t want to mess up the painting phase after putting so much care and quality into the modeling bit to make them unique.
I really want to paint my army’s armor primarily black with red on details like the joints and pauldrons. On top of that I’d love to paint the engravings many have on their armor gold so they really pop. Do any of you guys have any Votann specific or even just general advice on how I should go about painting these votann?

Today I picked up my first 40k units in a Hernkyn Yaegirs kill team. I’m one of those people that’s listened to lore videos, read books, and watched battle reports for years… but I’ve never taken the plunge.
With Gundam Assemble around the corner it finally got the juices flowing, and gave me a reason to take the dive into war games and mini painting, and I’m quickly falling in love with it.
My hope is to get some kill team under my belt just to feel things out… but from what I’ve gathered, this army feels like everything I’d love to be doing so my question is…
Where do I go from here? Assuming I love the game the way I think I will, what’s the shopping order look like? Would you recommend an escalation league or just build a 1-2k army and leap head first into the deep end?
I feel like there’s so much to learn and catch up on and any help and input would do wonders. Thanks in advance friends!

I'm just getting started and having trouble grasping the yield points rule.
Does anybody have links to videos explaining or can explain.
On top of army rules, detachment rules it's a bit confusing

Long time listener first time caller.
Been working on my dorky dwarves for a little bit, still have a long way to go but leaning into the voxel aesthetic, basing bits coming soon tm.

Hello all I’m usually an emperors children/space wolves enjoyer but I got tired of space marines after a while so I decided to pick up the combat patrol with some hernkyn pioneers. Anyways, I just got done assembling the thunderkyn and I have to say IT IS THE WORST MODEL IVE EVER PUT TOGETHER I was fvcking hateful putting them together. Just had to say that, I’m looking forward to painting them all. I think I’m gonna go for a deurgar type of skin with the greater thurian league or ymyr congolomerate paint scheme.

Lore description:
Steinar Steinarsson is totally crazy even by Arkanyst standards, and there is a very solid reason for this...
Rudolph "Rudy" Steiner was a brilliant but unethical human scientist who used to work for arch-heretic Samuel Krüger. 200 years ago, when the fallen Inquisitor was defeated, Rudy was taken prisoner by the Adeptus Mechanicus. Steiner worked in the Tech-Priests' basements for a long time until he figured out how to escape.
Fleeing his pursuers, Rudy found himself on the Hold World of Hexon-Andvâri Fuel Concern. He made his way to their Ancestral Core, hacked the ancient supercomputer using a sophisticated techno-virus, and injected his genetic material into its database. Then he vanished without a trace.
Then, one fine day, an unusual Kin emerged from the Crucible. Not an adult in his prime, but an elderly man. He possessed an insatiable thirst for science - and for destruction. And though the other Kin were wary of Steinar, no one suspected what kind of "time bomb" was planted inside the Concern…

Feels weird that the whole “hazardously experimental gun” thing only goes one way. I want our mad scientist to turn enemies into meat bombs.

I've searched this sub and can't find anyone talking about this, but I feel like I must have missed it.
So with the 11th edition change to leadership, you now attach leader units to bodyguard units to form attached units during the muster army step, before splitting them into sagitaurs during the declare battle formations step. So far so normal.
An attached unit is treated as a single unit for all rules purposes. So when it comes time to split that hearthkyn warrior unit into two units with as equal number of models as possible, you'll be splitting the 15 model unit into a unit of 7 models and a unit of 8 models.
Obviously you split the bodyguard models up. But there's nothing saying you can't split the leader models up as well. They're all part of the same unit, after all.
I expected there to be a rule stating that the leader unit's models have to be kept together, but I've been looking through the Votann faction pack and the wahapedia rules glossary and I can't find anything.
So you can make an iron-master + steelkin assistant + e-cog + 4 hearthkyn into a unit of 7 models and pop them into a sagitaur (because the e-cog takes no space in transport), and the remaining 6 hearthkyn + 2 e-cogs become a second unit and you can pop them into a sagitaur too.
The 2 prodigal e-cogs will remain alive even if their iron-master father dies, because that iron-master model is no longer a part of their unit. But it gets fuckier.
When you split the hearthkyn warriors into 2 mini-units, they both retain the core "Luck Has, Need Keeps, Toil Earns" ability from their datasheet, because they're both still hearthkyn warrior units. If you split the brokhyr iron-master models into 2 units, they're both still brokhyr-iron master units and they're both still technically leading their respective hearthkyn warrior units, even if only one of them actually has the brokhyr iron-master model.
So both units get to Forgewrought Expertise repair a nearby vehicle.
This doesn't seem game breaking but also doesn't seem intentional? Am I missing anything or is there a common tournament ruling to forbid this for now?

GW dropped some rules updates today. Our faction got an FAQ clarification.
Q: Does an Arkanyst Evaluator’s Science Guild Support ability give that model Lone Operative if the only other unit within 3" is another Arkanyst Evaluator?
A: No
