HoMM5 HoMM 5 ToE using wine on Linux

Has anybody been successful running Heroes 5 Tribes of the East (and, well, Heroes 5.5, but that comes later) using wine on Linux? I am using Fedora 38 and I am to install the GOG version using wine. It starts, I hear the Ubisoft music but I never see the menu, the screen just stays black. This is the error:

0510:fixme:d3d:wined3d_query_gl_create Unhandled query type 0x4.
0510:err:system:NtUserChangeDisplaySettings Changing L"\\\\.\\DISPLAY1" display settings returned -2.
0510:err:system:NtUserChangeDisplaySettings Changing L"\\\\.\\DISPLAY1" display settings returned -2.

Any idea? Thanks a lot!

I was scanning once more what can be installed with winetricks and tried dxvk. With this, it actually works.... :)

Old post but I had big trouble getting Heroes 5 to run on my PC but figured it out. This is for Basegame and HoF but I assume should work for ToE too. So in case someone searching finds this post:

\1. Proton is required, I could not get the game to work with regular wine on my device. I got mine to work with proton-sarek-10-4 but other versions may work too.

\2. To directly call H5 from command line: (change paths to what they are in your install)

STEAM_COMPAT_CLIENT_INSTALL_PATH=/path/to/proton STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=/path/to/prefix /path/to/proton/proton run /path/to/prefix/pfx/drive_c/heroes5/bin/H5_Game.exe

however, your working directory must be the bin directory of the install! (represented by /path/to/prefix/pfx/drive_c/heroes5/bin)

\3. To call it from a .desktop shortcut, just dissect the statement as follows:

Environment variables: STEAM_COMPAT_CLIENT_INSTALL_PATH=/path/to/proton STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=/path/to/prefix

Program: /path/to/proton/proton

Arguments: run H5_Game.exe

Working Directory: /path/to/prefix/pfx/drive_c/heroes5/bin

\4. extra stuff

I'm not sure if it's required, but I have my winecfg -> H5_Game.exe in the proton prefix set to:

Compatibility Mode: Windows 7

Window Manager allowed to decorate: yes

Window Manager allowed to control: yes

Emulate a virtual desktop: yes, 800x600

But those are just random settings from troubleshooting, may or not be required.

Either way, the virtual desktop is not being applied to the actual game, which works in full screen at various resolutions.

Alternatively, you can "Add a non steam-game to steam", search for the H5_game.exe directly (no shortcuts, no generated .desktop files), and then "force use of a specific compatibility tool". I just prefer not having a launcher running in the background if it's unnecessary.

I had H5 working (I think that includes Tribes of the East) on Mint around 10 years ago, but wouldn't know anymore what settings I used if it wasn't just Platinum. But you already found it, so... :)

I have it working under Linux, although not the GOG but the Steam version.
