How we built the fight scenes for our indie sci-fi film around real martial arts instead of CGI (action teaser)

Hi r/Hema , I’m Olga, producer and co-writer of KILL/SAVE, an indie sci-fi action film we shot in Spain. I wanted to share this here because the fights are the part of the film we’re proudest of, and they come straight from martial arts.
The fights were choreographed by Oscar Fernández and our director, Den Kryuchkov, who has trained in baguazhang for over 20 years. Our lead, Matt Testro, used to box competitively and does his own fights whenever he’s on camera, no double. And for the first-person scenes, where the camera sees through the hero’s eyes, it’s Oscar himself fighting as the hero. So every punch you see from his point of view is a real choreographer’s punch.
The story gave us an unusual challenge and the film mixes several styles, from Spanish fencing to wushu, with swords, axes, shields and empty hands. Huge credit to our Spanish stunt team, who did an incredible job. The action teaser credits them all by name.
A question for people who actually train: which movie fight scenes do you think got it right, where you watched and thought “yes, that’s how it really works”? And what instantly breaks it for you?
