I'm guessing the idea is to sell this one as cheap as humanly possible? Because it doesn't look ergonomic whatsoever.

u/Sonikku_a May 14 '26
Like something MadCatz would have made 20 years ago.

u/noahsalwaysmad May 14 '26
The player 2 special
14
u/Jafin89 May 14 '26
Lmao I remember when I bought my PS2 slim it came bundled with a free second controller and that thing was so damn small I genuinely don't know how any adult could have comfortably used it.
13
u/ThriftyMegaMan May 14 '26
8bitdo makes them in a similar shape for PC/switch/console. Not the comfiest but they are better to use than a single joycon for Mario Kart.

u/rocky4322 May 14 '26
I think the idea is it fits in your pocket.

u/WarMad940 May 14 '26
If so that’s stupid that will break your joy sticks….
1
u/Party-Exercise-2166 May 20 '26
I doubt people that can live with the latency of cloud gaming will notice.
9
u/FnZombie May 14 '26
Don’t some people like this form factor?
42
u/SortIntrepid9192 May 14 '26
Some people also drink their own piss, but I wouldn't offer a glass of Granny's peach tea over lemonade if I have guests over.

I know 8bitdo and CRKD make controllers of about this shape and size, I couldn't use it but more power to the folks who like it

I kinda like this ngl, looks small and simple, easy to throw in a backpack or something

u/Deceptiveideas May 14 '26
Have we gotten any updates on the leaked controllers and series 3? I've been waiting for those...

49
u/junttiana May 14 '26
Maybe im in the minority but I really like the design, hoping it works as a regular controller as well
15
u/thisnamenotavailable May 14 '26
Me too. Would be great to keep in a travel bag and whip out for use w/ a laptop or phone.
I currently have the similar 8bitdo controller for a similar purpose and while it’s super comfy to hold and use, switching connections between devices has been a nightmare. If I can get the same experience as a standard Xbox controller I’ll buy it in a heartbeat.
3
u/Mammoth-Material3161 May 14 '26
yes this would be my use case, on official ms controller to keep permanently in the laptop bag to whip out anytime along with our slim mice etc
27
u/rustyshackelfordd May 14 '26
This looks real neat for what it's trying to accomplish, although clearly nobody commenting in this thread understands what it's for lol
19
u/FlyFight2Win May 14 '26
Yep. Reddit and especially GLAR ain't beating those allegations anytime soon.
shows portable controller that can fit in your pocket for cloud gaming
"wHy dOnT tHeY jUsT uSe tHe ReGuLaR CoNtRoLLeR?" 🤪🤪

u/Iucidium May 14 '26
Please have hall effect sticks!
It wont
4
u/av0w May 16 '26
TMR (Tunneling Magnetoresistance) is the successor to hall effect, which is in the new Steam controller. Effect were so bad for battery life. But these won't have tmr either.
3
u/Feashrind May 15 '26
You know what, this looks like a great travel controller for laptop or portable gaming system.
10
u/SpiderFan241 May 14 '26
Are they going backwards? What's wrong with the normal controller design?
77
u/Jumpster_42 May 14 '26
This is obviously a controller you put in your pocket when you travel. It has to be as portable as possible.
10
u/beary_neutral May 14 '26
It also connects directly to Xbox Cloud instead of to the streaming device itself for reduced input delay.
6
-13
u/SpiderFan241 May 14 '26
That's fair but is it to stream on a portable TV with portable Wi-Fi access point?
13
u/Jumpster_42 May 14 '26
You can stream xCloud on any device with browser. If it has a display and an internet connection you can play xCloud. You just gotta have a controller with you. And such a portable one is a perfect choice.
Want more of ergonomics but less portable? Take a regular one.
-12
u/SpiderFan241 May 14 '26
Or a backbone.
So are you saying that... everything is an Xbox?!
8
u/p00tisbear May 14 '26
The backbone controller is 100 bucks and outright requires a direct connection to a smartphone unless you spring for the pro version which is even more money. Whilst we can't say for certain, it's a pretty safe assumption that this xbox cloud controller is going to come in at much cheaper than a backbone in order to provide an accesible entry point for a portable controller for cloud gaming. That alone is more than enough justification for this to exist, not everyone is going to want to spend to money on a backbone I don't get why that's so hard for you to understand.
There are also various devices that you can stream Xcloud on that don't support the backbone, TVs, laptops tablets etc. It's honestly weird that this went completely over your head given that the person who replied to your post went out of their way to highlight this.
-2
u/SpiderFan241 May 14 '26
This might be slightly cheaper than a normal Xbox controller but I wouldn’t say Xbox is known for making affordable hardware and peripherals. The backbone is about £60 in the UK, I didn’t know it’s that much more in the US, even in dollars.
4
u/p00tisbear May 14 '26
I mean none of the first party controllers from any of the big three are "affordable", but it's also an instance of getting a product that's reflective of what you pay for. You can buy third party controllers for maybe £15-20 less than the official first party ones or get a cheap unbranded one for even less but those controllers are almost always going to feel noticeably off or inferior to the first party models, everyone knows this. Some won't care, but there's also many people who would rather pay the slight markup just to have a controller from a brand they trust that feels better and will probably last a couple of years longer than something that's cheaper.
In any case, the basic Xbox controller costs about 50 bones currently. I see literally no reason why this new smaller controller would cost more than that consider it's a basic no frills product, it's probably going to end up somewhere within the ballpark of £35-45. If you want a portable pocket sized controller then that's a perfectly cromulent price point and there's also not a lot of controllers within this specific size scale actually so it's legitmately filling a niche. The only widely available comparable hardware that isn't temu crap or a mobile controller is 8bitdo's micro offerings, for the people who have a legitmate use case for an itty bitty controller I'm sure this thing will be quite attractive.

But then the backbone controller exists. Seems a bit awkward, unless there's a grip for the phone too.

u/Hot-Software-9396 May 14 '26
"Portable TV" lol, what are we even doing here. I honestly can't tell if you're being purposefully obtuse.

11
u/Hot-Software-9396 May 14 '26
Do you seriously think this is supposed to replace their standard controller? This is clearly meant to be a pocketable, use on the go accessory to connect to mobile devices.
1
u/SpiderFan241 May 14 '26
I never thought it was meant to replace it, no. And it wouldn’t, this thing looks as comfortable to play on as a cheese grater.

ITT: lots of people assuming that 100% of gamers are dudes with massive hands
2
u/paullyrose3rd May 19 '26
I'd rather get this as a second controller than a lot of the budget options Ive used over time with Xbox, also I have to say it's a curious move with the new management that their immediate first hardware release is a budget product!
Maybe i'm crazy, but a cheaper xbox series s slimline revision could pair up pretty nicely with it as an in box inclusion

u/Bu11etToothBdon May 14 '26
Why make pocket sized and not flatten out the thumb sticks or recess them more so they don't snag. If I was that desperate to travel with my controller I'd put a regular one in a fanny pack.

Neat, but why?
Rechargeable battery is good, but no 3.5mm headphone input sucks
18
u/Chelf1 May 14 '26
It's designed for when you play Xcloud on your phone don't really need 3.5mm, most pople have bluetooth earbuds
1
u/ChaucerBoi May 14 '26
Interesting that the font for the face buttons is different. Maybe that'll be the look for Project Helix?

u/LogicalError_007 May 14 '26
I might get one if it's cheap. I use KBM so getting a cheap controller won't hurt. Looks cozy.

Looks like the madcats controller you'd make the friend use because it never worked

1
u/Toyotamanthesequal May 15 '26
Cool, but did they bother fixing all of the reliability issues with this one, or maybe got on Playstation's level with removable thumbstick modules so when they drift out you don't have to buy an entirely new controller? I've been through so many of these elite controllers, and they never last nearly as long as the default controller I got when I bought the xbox. Show me something better when I'm spending hundreds on custom controllers I don't want the right bumper failing within weeks of purchase, and forcing me to mail my controller back, and forth for warranty support until the warranty expires, and the controller dies forever.
Give us quality control, and home repairs. I don't need new buttons, and scroll wheels. I need the buttons we already have to work. When I walk into game stop to buy a temporary controller I don't want the guy behind the counter to list the exact issue that I had as something he sees everyday. I want him to say "hmm that's weird these $200 controllers are high quality, and don't usually fail."

Looks like one of those retro style controllers that are somehow even more uncomfortable than the original.

u/Leather-Entry93 May 14 '26
It looks like someone just hit the regular controller with a mallet lol. I kinda like it

-3
u/TitleAccomplished749 May 14 '26
It looks like an awful SNES controller with analog sticks. Why not just buy an xbox controller?
7
u/WolfCola723 May 14 '26
It’s tiny and meant to slip in a pocket or in a backpack zipper I imagine. Like the 8BitDo Bluetooth controllers.
-2
u/KevinT_XY May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26
I bought two controllers of this form factor before going away for the holidays for an extended time. Fit into tiny pockets in my backpack so I didn't feel bad about the added weight or space and it let me turn my laptop into a coop console.
-7
u/AccomplishedBank2140 May 14 '26
Does Microslop do anything right these days? It looks horrible.
1
u/space-cadaver May 14 '26
The GamePass price reduction was pretty good...
1
u/AccomplishedBank2140 May 14 '26
If thats what gets you excited!
-1
u/space-cadaver May 14 '26
You're just being disingenuous if GP reduction wasn't seen as a surprise win for Xbox
0
u/Strict_Job6334 May 14 '26
They are going to release the highest rated game of 2026 so far in like, 4 days btw
-5
-1
u/crucibleknight77 May 14 '26
Just make a controller that don’t sound like a Fisher-Price toy and maybe add some gyro functionality and I’ll take it over any Elite controller that costs over a $100 any day.
-3
u/xSyllano May 14 '26
Microsoft viu o formato horrendo dos controles da Valve e deicidiu que não poderia perder essa batalha
-1
u/GigioFigio May 14 '26
That looks like the most generic and cheapest 3rd party controller ever lol
1
-8
u/EatOfTheBread May 14 '26
MS have made the best controllers on the market for years imo, but that is absolute ass.
3
u/VistaVick May 14 '26
Well, they are the best as far as multi-platform compatibility goes. And the core controller is probably the best value among Microsoft, Sony, Valve, Nintendo etc for that reason.
-5
u/Esmear18 May 14 '26
Xbox controllers are far from the best. That title goes to GameSir, 8BitDo, and Flydigi.

Then what do you think is the best for console?
1
u/EatOfTheBread May 14 '26
Xbox elite controller and it's not close
-2
u/Esmear18 May 14 '26
Those are terrible. No mouse click trigger setting, no mechanical face buttons, and the potentiometer thumbsticks get stick drift. Elite controllers are way behind in the controller market. Other companies have already made better products at cheaper prices.
-3
u/GamePitt_Rob May 14 '26
Lol, that's terrible
I imagine there's no rumble, no rumble in the triggers, and the triggers themselves look digital and not analogue - so racing games will be crap with these
Also, who are they aiming these at? Small children?

Ugh gross. I mean I guess if it's only meant to allow for cloud gaming on the go, sure it's better than touch screens buuuuut a big no for anything else

u/ILoveTheAtomicBomb May 14 '26
Wow that looks like garbage. Just whatever spare parts they could find and threw it together to call it a controller
-3

u/TheDragonDAFan May 14 '26
They remind me of the controllers you would get with the starter packs for the mobile versions of Skylanders games.

u/calb3rto May 14 '26
Xbox usually creates absolute peak controller designs but these don’t look comfortable at all…
-2
-2
-2
u/therealyittyb May 14 '26
Xbox essentially perfected the ergonomics for their controller already
Why ruin it?
2
u/Hot-Software-9396 May 14 '26
It's meant to be a pocketable controller for use with mobile devices for cloud gaming. It's not replacing their standard controller.

u/AlphaSniper_134 May 14 '26
Looks very similar to the 8BitDo small controllers
