Barrachd Fiosrachaidh S01E07 - A Crow Gàidhealach, ri fhaighinn a-nis!

(Gaelic Below)
As the nights get colder and darker, why not huddle round the Barrachd Fiosrachaidh this month as we take a look at corvids, the precocious goths of the sky! 25 minutes of learning and craic: the good, the bad, and the fiosrachaidh. Gorgeous art by Bean Fhiosrachaidh (@buidhedhut on Instagram): play along by working which wee guy is which from the descriptions in the podcast! As always, thank you all so much for listening. Last month we covered philosophy, which I thought would be boring, but you listened in record numbers! Enjoy this month's episode, and I'll bet you won't guess what's coming next month.

Barrachd Fiosrcahidh is an edutaining podcast aimed at intermediate and advanced Gaelic speakers, covering a random topic every month, from history to dogs to quantum physics, generated by my patented Subject-generating Machine! Subtitles in Gaelic on every episode.

Leis na h-oidhcheannan a’ dol nas fhuaire agus nas duirche, nach dèan thu fhèin seasgair timcheall a’ Bharrachd Fiosrachaidh, is sinn a’ toirt sùil air na cnàimhich, Gotaich ghlic an adhair! Còig air fhichead mionaid de ionnsachadh agus craic: am math, an dona, agus am fiosrachadh. Ealain àlainn le Bean Fhiosrachaidh (@buidhedhut air Instagram). An urrainn dhut na h-eòin aithneachadh bho na tuairisgeulan a thug mi seachad? Tapadh leibh a-rithist airson èisteachd. Am mìos sa chaidh, rinn mi earrann air feallsanachd. Tha ùidh agam anns a’ chuspair sin, ach chan eil a h-uile duine cho mòr air. Bha dragh orm nach còrdadh e ribh, ach dh’èist sibh ris dha-rìribh! Tha gràdh agam air an luchd-èisteachd agam. 's e annas a bhios cuspair na h-ath-earrainn gun teagamh!

‘S e pod-chraoladh foghlamach agus spòrsail a th’ ann am Barrachd Fiosrachaidh, do luchd-labhairt eadar-mheadhanach agus adhartach. Gach mìos, bidh sinn a’ bruidhinn mu dheidhinn cuspair tuairmeach eile, air a thaghadh le Inneal a’ Chuspair™️  a thog mi fhìn bho sprùilleach às an t-seada. Fo-thiotalan sa Ghàidhlig air gach earrann.

Looking for a good translating site or book

Hi, this is my first post here and I need help. I've been interested in the language for awhile and I have two dictionaries and a website I use for translating words and phrases (LearnGaelic.com, 2020 dictionary by Geddes & Grossiet, and a 1975 dictionary by Neil MacAlpine and John Mackenzie. I also have a book on learning it but that's not at issue right now). My problem is I've noticed that my books and the website don't always match with translations, for example the site says that "gaine" means "fin" like a fish fin but it's not in my books.

Is there an up to date dictionary in use or a translating site that is considered reliable and accurate by native or experienced speakers?

I would be using this for my own use and maybe a little use in a story I may work on.

📚 Ionnsachadh Cànain | Language Learning Gàidhlig

Hey Gaels! I don't have much Scottish blood but my folks hail from across the channel. My best friend is half Scottish and after telling her I have been learning Gaelige for 3 years, we talked a bit about her interest in learning Gàidhlig. I have an old grammar book from like the 1940s and I was wondering if you guys had an equivalent? I'd prefer an older, very reliable book and the more info the better. Thank you in advance!

as the title says. i do better learning from tasks than just reading, i understand i could just look for them online but with the amount of ai generated books and such nowadays i wanted to see if there were any specific recommendations i could get first! ideally beginner level but i'll take what i can get, i'm not scared of trying something a bit too difficult for me right now. thanks!

📚 Ionnsachadh Cànain | Language Learning How do I tell the pronounciation difference between certain words?

In the instance of athair it can also look like ‘athair if it’s denoting his father. How do I tell the difference phonologically for that, as well as for words where it has silent letters, but beyond that, is spelled the same as another word?

Texts to translate

Hi - I'm wondering if there's any good books or resources with very short texts that go from extreme beginner to advanced. I'm learning Gaelic and would love a short text to translate every so often, almost like comprehension in primary school.

🎭 Na h-Ealain & Cultar | Arts & Culture Dheanainn Sùgradh Waulking Song

Hi, I am an Irish speaker and I am trying to translate the waulking song 'Dheanainn Sùgradh' into Donegal Irish. The last two verses are giving me trouble as they don't seem to translate as naturally and I can't get a proper sense of their meaning from online translations which contradict each other. The verses are:

Dh'fheumadh pòrsan thigh'n a búth dhith
Ged a bhiodh e crún an cairteal

Ged a bhiodh e crún an óirleach
Dh'fheumadh pòrsan dheth thigh'n dhachaidh

Would anyone be able to give a sense of what is being conveyed in the context of the song.

Why no Squarepants?

Hey. Asking here as my knowledge of the language is still extremely limited, I keep dragging my feet on properly learning it.

As I'm sure most here will be aware, BBC ALBA has now officially made available the Gaelic version of SpongeBob Squarepants. However, the official title is just "Spongebob (ALBA)", and the song only repeats the words "SpongeBob SpongeBob". This is interesting as Welsh got a full name translation (SpynjBob Pantsgwâr), but the much more closely related Irish got the full English title. Any reason for this? Is there no good translation or does it just not sound good in Gaelic? It could be a length thing, but Albanian got the very long title Bob Sfungjeri Pantallona Katrori.

Was just curious haha, take care

An Cùrsa Adhartais vs. An Cùrsa Inntrigidh

Latha math, a chàirdean! Tha ceist agam...

I am currently in Earrann 2 of ACI, and being a distance learner from the United States, that means a 4:30 AM class once a week. My question is for those of you who have completed An Cùrsa Adhartais. I know it requires a significantly greater amount of prep time per week, but what is class experience like? How many tutorials per week? Are additional gatherings/classes needed (I'm sure they're recommended)? And what do the assessments entail?

I love learning the language. Over 1100 days on Duolingo - mostly to stay fresh on vocabulary. I've done the SpeakGaelic lessons up through B1 (I'm saving B2 for when I complete ACI). I even took Saturday courses sponsored by Comunn Gàidhlig Thoronto.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide about ACA.

Gaelic related things to visit

Hello!

I'm planning to visit Scotland (Glasgow & Edinburgh) for a few days during the end of October.

I'm on a budget, otherwise I totally would've gone to the highlands or especially Isle of Skye, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for experiences or things to visit for Scottish Gaelic? (a shop/pub that has some gaelic, a conversation circle, or a monument to visit)

I'm not expecting much at all but thought I'd ask lol. I know that Glasgow has the Gaelic Books Council which I'm excited to get some books from.

Learning Gaidhlig in Ireland

I am a fluent Irish speaker and I'm very interested in Gaidhlig. I want to find some shows or movies to watch but I can't access BBC iPlayer without a VPN and can't afford to pay for one. Is there any alternatives?
