I am trying to keep an eye on my persimmons as my yard is a squirrel road.

I prefer the ones I can ripen on the tree but it’s always a risk. I love how big my persimmons are. I wonder if they will get smaller when the tree is bigger and producing more. I wonder why people don’t plant them as ornamentals, they are such pretty trees in the fall. Like little pumpkins.

Season almost finished. What has been your favorite for the season? For me it's been the Sicilian 33 and Calderona. Which surprised you? To me the most surprisingly fantastic was the Bakor. Let's hear from you. What has been your experience?

New to growing fruit trees

Hi everyone! I’m a newly certified gardener and expanded my vegetable garden this past year. As I move toward more food independence, I want to plant more fruit trees and fruiting shrubs. I have identified a very sunny spot of lawn (8-10 hours of sun per day in summer) that I have covered in cardboard and woodchips to prepare for planting next spring. It’s roughly 30x30 feet on a very gentle slope on the North East side of my front yard.

I definitely want to grow apple trees, and use strawberries as ground cover. I’m also interested in raspberries, grapes, blackberries, and additional fruit trees (I also have 6 blueberry bushes in pots). What varieties do you recommend? What resources (books, YouTube channels, etc) do you recommend I study for care? I do organic gardening, but I assume I will need to spray trees, so what treatments do you recommend? I also have deer to contend with and can’t build higher than a 4 foot fence, so also welcome tips for deterring them.

I found this subreddit from backyard orchard, so please direct me to any existing threads here about this topic. I live in NJ, Zone 6b/7a depending on the year.

Any idea what this is?

Every fall my apple tree gets these all over inside. There's some sort of webbing but not a ton holding the leaves in tight. Obviously it's some sort of pest or insect nest. Any idea what it is? It's only ever on this one tree. It's a columnar apple tree. Located in the USA, zone 7.

what be wrong? why so few leaves? why fruiting still in october?

The fruits are mostly small and they are still ripening and here it is the middle of October! I rescued this small tree from a drainage ditch at Horsepark in San Diego. The next year it produced a few small peaches and as soon as I realized it was WHITE PEACHES it was deigned worthy and planted in the ground. Two years later there were several beautiful peaches bigger than a baseball. Last year I think I pinched off tiny developing fruits too soon and the crop was negligible. This year I limited by pinching but the tree barely leafed out and why the fruits only started to ripen in late summer is beyond me. In previous years most of the fruit was picked by June.

I will say, as these less than the size of an egg peaches ripen, they are a sweet little snack!

Sigh. : (

Nine weeks ago I did some simple whip grafting this Spring. This is of a wild pear rootstock ( Mt Biggs 2) supplied by a friend Eric Cairns. Now the vegetative buds are starting to swell and will produce leaves soon. Grafted on to Beurre Hardy.
