We've updated our rules

Hello everyone!

As many of you know, this subreddit has been essentially unmoderated for quite a while. Last week, Reddit appointed a new mod team to step in. We've all been members of this community for a while, and we share the same passion for electric cars that you do.

Over the past week, we’ve been brainstorming ways to make this space more organized, civil, engaging, and genuinely useful for everyone.

To kick things off, we are rolling out an updated set of community rules. The original rules have been in place for years now, and they are no longer enough to maintain the quality of discussions in this sub.

Here are the new rules:

Rule 1 - Be respectful, keep it clean and SFW.

Please be respectful to fellow community members. If you don’t agree with someone, remain civil and disagree respectfully. Challenge the ideas and not the person. Don’t reveal personal information (no doxxing). Don’t spam, no trolling, no baiting. No NSFW content whatsoever.

Rule 2 - Only related to electric "cars”

This community is strictly dedicated to electric cars.

If you are looking to post about electric motorcycles, e-bikes, or other electric propelled non-motorized passenger vehicles. Please visit r/ElectricVehicles.

Autocycles, Quadricycles/Microcars, Passenger LSEVs, Electric Kei-Jidōsha, and Electrified Buses are exempt.

We’re here to discuss the cars and companies, not politicians and CEOs.

Posts and comments not related to electric cars may be removed.

Rule 3 - Put some effort into comments and submissions

Please try to refrain from 1-2 word comments that don’t add anything of value to the topic. In other words, don’t shout from the crowd, sit at the discussion table.

Search first before submitting an article to see if another one covering the same topic has been posted recently. If you’re posting an article that’s paywalled, please try your best to post a mirror / unlocked article in the comments. Try to post an article from the most reputable / unbiased source covering a particular topic.

Rule 4 - Stay on topic

When commenting, please engage in discussions that are relevant to the topic. Do not steer the conversation away or go into an unrelated / vaguely related tirade. Do not bring politics into the conversation if the topic isn’t political, especially if it’s not politics related to EVs.

Rule 5 - Do not spread misinformation

Do not try to pass off verifiably incorrect facts, stats, series of events etc. as statements of truth. If you are unsure, please do a cursory search before hitting submit or state that you are unsure of the claims you’re making.

Rule 6 - Self-promotion

We allow very limited self-promotion upon approval from the moderators. If you are looking to promote something, please modmail us before doing so. Promoting without getting approved by moderators first may result in an immediate ban for self promotion.

No referral links are allowed, please see the referral section in the Wiki for the megathread for codes.

Rule 7 - Anything not mentioned in rules.

It is very important to have some important rules to keep the community a safe and engaging space for everyone, but at the same time, some communities put too many limits in the name of rules. We aren’t one of em - just follow the basics listed above and you will be good!

Anything that isn't mentioned above probably qualifies for posting. Please mod-mail us if you need clarification before posting.

Rules will be updated every now and then, so please check this page every now and then.

Please follow the rules above when participating. Going forward, please report any post / comment that you feel are in violation of any of those rules.

Thanks!

“Maximum performance, minimal mass. The new high-voltage battery and drive unit technology used to drive Roadster enables our most compact RWD Unit Yet. Together, they deliver 1 MW of Pure Power- that’s one third more than Model S Plaid-with half the mass. The result is paradigm shifting acceleration with amazing cornering and precise stopping power.”

💬 Discussion Has anyone tried using an EV for remote trailhead access on hunting trips?

I switched to an EV for my daily commute and grocery runs, but now I'm wondering how it'll work for getting back to deer camp. Most of the trails I use involve thirty to forty miles of county roads, then a gravel stretch that tears up tires on anything too low. The range calculator says I'll be fine, but the last time I took the truck out there, I burned through almost twice the fuel I expected. The hills and the slow crawl over washouts really ate into my mileage. My plan was to charge at a truck stop on the way home, but those chargers are usually on the interstate, meaning I'd have to backtrack an hour.
Curious if anyone regularly drives their EV to remote spots. What's the real-world range hit once you add a loaded cooler, rifles, and a couple passengers? Also wondering if gravel dust does anything weird to the charging port, or if that's just me overthinking it.

📰 News Nearly a decade of hype. Can the new Roadster finally deliver?

• Upvotes

I'll be honest, seeing a car do things that almost look impossible is exciting. The thrusters, the flips, the acceleration. You can't deny the engineering ambition behind it.

But then I remembered this car was announced back in 2017.

That's what makes me look at the whole thing differently. I enjoy seeing technology push boundaries, but after a point, I care less about what a company says its product could do and more about what people can actually get their hands on.

Imagine following this car for years, watching every new reveal, and still waiting for the real thing.

Maybe I'm more interested in seeing technology delivered than being sold the next big vision. The demo gets my attention, but execution is what earns my respect.

💬 Discussion First time EV owner - new 2026 limit Ioniq 5 or used 2024 BMW iX?

It’s a little apples and oranges, but the new 2026 Ioniqs and the used 2023/2024 BMW iXs are about the same price. I’m having a hard time weighing them out. The way I see it now:

Pros of the Ioniq:
- new
- I know 3 people with this car and they all love it
- smaller
- good inside space
Cons:
- not rated very well on consumer reports
- it’s not a BMW, so even tho it’s nice, it might not be as nice, smooth, or safe as a BMW

Pros of the iX:
- one of the top rated electric cars
- nice standard features, even on lower trims
- good known/documented reliability
- people seem to love this car - saying it’s a smooth ride (idk them personally)
- since it’s used, it’s a higher end car for the same price
Cons:
- used, so who knows how well the last person took care of it
- expensive maintenance

It’s a pretty surface level list, but I’m wondering if anyone here has thoughts on either car and can help me evaluate the pros and cons a little better. Thanks!

💬 Discussion What do you wish your dealer had explained better when you picked up your EV?

I’m based in Beijing and spent over eight years in car sales. I’m curious about what people felt was missing from their EV handover.

Was there an everyday feature or basic procedure you had to figure out yourself after collecting your EV? For example, saving a driver profile or getting into the car when the key fob battery dies.

Pickup day can involve a lot of information at once. I’d be interested to hear both what wasn’t explained and what was demonstrated but didn’t stick.

What was it, and how did you eventually work it out: the manual, a video, another owner, or a return visit to the dealer?

💬 Discussion I really like my 2013 Nissan Leaf.

Not sure where else to post this.

We needed a second car for family reasons. So I got a used Leaf for $3k. 8 bars, decent shape, previous owner was always on top of maintenance. Good tires, new struts. Bit of rust because its lived in the Midwest but that's to be expected.

I can't get over how much I like this car. It was cheap, everything works, I can play CDs, it's got an aux port, and it doesn't need any maintenance. It gets me to work and back, and errands around town. AC, heat. It's even comfortable (compared to my Bolt. What the hell is wrong with those seats..)

I could have bought a used gas car, or leased a new EV, but instead I have this used car that does exactly everything I need it to 98% of the time without paying extra for maintenance for capabilities I will never use.

I feel like I found some kind of loophole. Am I cheating? Why isn't everyone doing this?

💬 Discussion I’m trying to build a small real-world EV charging cost dataset — looking for a few U.S. drivers

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on a small EV cost project, and one thing I keep running into is that public charging prices look simple on paper, but what people actually pay can be pretty different depending on the network, location, time of day, membership, fees, etc.

So I’m trying to build a small dataset using real charging sessions from U.S. EV drivers.

I’m starting small. Right now I’m just looking for the first 10 verified contributors to see whether this is actually useful before I expand it.

For each session, I’m collecting things like:

  • vehicle make/model
  • state
  • charging network
  • charging date
  • kWh delivered
  • starting / ending SOC
  • charging time
  • peak speed
  • price per kWh
  • total session cost

If you want the small thank-you reward, I’ll also need a charging receipt or app screenshot that matches the session. You can blur or crop out personal information as long as the charging details are still visible.

For the first 10 verified contributors, I’m offering a $5 Amazon.com eGift Card after I review the submission.

One reward per person, and duplicate or unverifiable submissions won’t qualify.

Here’s the project page if you want to see what I’m trying to build:

https://gearupinsights.com/real-world-data

And here’s the direct submission form:

https://gearupinsights.com/real-world-data/submit

The project is free, I’m not selling anything, and the point is to eventually publish better real-world comparisons of what EV drivers are actually paying to charge.

If you do submit one, I’d also really appreciate any feedback on the form itself. If something is confusing, annoying, or feels unnecessary, let me know.

Thanks.

💬 Discussion What charging equipment do you keep in your EV, and when did you last use it?

Do you keep a portable charger, a separate charging cable, or any adapters in your car?

I’m interested in what actually gets used, rather than a list of everything someone could buy. Was the last use part of your normal routine, a planned trip, or an unexpected backup?

If you stopped carrying something, what made you decide you no longer needed it?

Please include your country, car model and the type of equipment, since charging setups differ between places.

📰 News Charge Enterprises ($CRGE) Agreed to Settle $4M With Investors over Misleading Financial Disclosures

Hey guys, if you missed it, Charge Enterprises just agreed to settle $4 million with investors over issues they had a few years ago. The settlement terms have been submitted to the court for approval.

In a nutshell, in 2024, Charge Enterprises was accused of misleading investors about its liquidity, KORR-related investments, financial condition, and internal controls. The company later disclosed serious liquidity problems involving funds it could not access, escalating debt issues, and a potential bankruptcy.

After this news came out, the stock dropped approximately 27%, and investors filed a lawsuit for their losses.

The good news is that the company recently agreed to settle $4 million with them, and the settlement terms have been submitted to the court for approval. So, if you invested in $CRGE when all of this happened, you can check the details and file your claim here.

Anyway, has anyone here invested in $CRGE at that time? How much were your losses, if so?
