Non-practicing, but how to fell trees?
I am not a druid, but let's say I have a great deal of respect for the beliefs, despite not believing myself. I do however feel a sacredness of the trees, and I current live on dozens of acres of unmanaged timber land. My approach has been rewilding, underbrush mgmt via goats, and only taking down dead trees.
However, we are experiencing a massive beetle kill. There are approx 30 trees that are dead or dying. If I take them before they are fully dead, the wood is usable as lumber, otherwise there is a small window for using as firewood, then they are only usable for the innards of hugelkultur mounds. Because most of those 30 trees are within striking distance of the cabin, I must also take down several living trees in order to safely fell the dead/dying trees.
I consulted with a "druid-adjacent" person, who suggested the red string, asking, and thanking for service/sacrifice. Is this sufficient?
In addition I am finding a lot of trees are over mature. I think it might be time to consider selective harvesting of the over mature trees to prevent more beetle kill. This doesn't sit well with me, but being a steward of the land and animals sometimes requires this, right? Or is fully rewilding just letting them fall and break down (and carbon is released)? If I harvest and use the wood, the carbon is not released. I'm blocked on moving forward with a plan and the result is each week another tree is turning brown from beetles.
What is the druidic pov on this?
