Success Story my experience as a type 1 on ozempic.

hi I’m a type 1 diabetic, 18F currently on ozempic!! I wanted to share my personal experience for any fellow Type 1 diabetics who are considering starting a GLP-1 or are just curious about it! When I started off, I was getting mixed reviews. Some loved it and ended up with some complications and bad side effects. We are all going to react differently to it but here’s my take.

I first got prescribed Wegovy by my endo under weight loss reasoning. My insurance did not want to cover it since it was not fda approved for type 1 diabetics. So I called my insurance after my doctor sent an appeal and they said there was no way they were going to cover it and to try ozempic! So I talked to my endo to prescribe ozempic for me and to mention high insulin resistance. To be honest, I didn’t have a huge issue with insulin resistance I mainly wanted the glp1 to lose weight as I have been struggling to lose weight even with intense diet and exercise. Anyways, my doctor prescribed ozempic under weight loss and insulin resistance and it worked. My insurance fully covered it thankfully.

Now about my actual experience on it… For the past month, I’ve been on the lowest dose .25. Today, I actually switched to a higher dose .5.(no bad side effects so far)My only bad experience was the first week of my body adjusting to it. I experienced nausea only. however the next weeks, I responded very well to it. No bad side effects, no more nausea. I got all the good benefits. I no longer binge eat no more, I’m very mindful with food and slowly but surely, I was losing weight! I lost about 10 pounds in the first month. And my insulin needs brought down from about 60-80 units daily down to 40 units. Its worked perfectly with insulin resistance and weight loss + my horrible eating habits. Forgot to mention, it keeps my blood sugar very stable. I barely get blood sugar spikes. I have not seen my blood sugar over the 300s ever since. Only goes to the 200s max when I forget to bolus.

also, if you’re worrying about low blood sugars. i only had one bad day of a couple low blood sugars, nothing too crazy all I had to do was lower my basal rate and I was good! i took it as a sign of my insulin resistance lowering which is great! i haven’t got any severe low blood sugars ever since. youll just be more prone to lows because your insulin needs will decrease so make sure your monitoring your blood sugars and lowering the basal to fix that issue!

I hope sharing my experience has helped anyone who’s considering starting a glp1! I know how overwhelming it can be hearing so many mixed opinions, so I wanted to share a positive experience from someone who’s actually on it. Of course, everyone’s body responds differently, and what worked for me might not work the same for everyone. If you have any questions about my experience, please feel free to ask! I’m more than happy to answer and share more about my journey. wishing you all the best!! 💗

I swear I ate! Apple and 2 protein+ Babybel for breakfast, triple shot mocha breve for snack, 2 pieces of einkorn flour toast, 2 eggs, sausage for 2nd breakfast, an entire steamer bag of edamame, and a burger for dinner. 😂

My TDD basal is down by 20 units, daily bolus by 40 from yesterday.

I have no idea what the hell is different but I'm not complaining!

Mental Health How do you deal with the stress?

My 6 year old son was diagnosed in July of this year. The initial shock is over, but I'm really struggling mentally with this being our new normal.

1 - Constant jump scares even though we're in a good place. Maybe he's at school and he's at 130 looking level, so I focus on my work for a while. Maybe I don't check the follow app for a whole 40 minutes. Then I look at my phone and he's at 76 straight down. My whole body floods with stress. I call the school, they get him a snack, I stare at my phone for 30 minutes till I see the numbers in a good place.

2 - No sleep ever again. It's like we're back to having an infant except instead of waking up to breastfeed it's waking up to see if the low alert is a compression low or maybe it's just the Dexcom is getting old and it decided to crap out, or maybe it's a REAL low and we have to figure out what to eat.

3- Intrusive thoughts about how close we were to losing him. I'll think about the early days when the insulin dosage was way off and he was going low every two hours for two weeks straight, and how if we had followed the instructions from the hospital he would have ended up in a coma or dead. Or I'll think about the one time I asked my husband to prep his Lantus, and I saw a bubble in the needle so went to re-draw it and just by chance my husband was standing there and saw me pick up the vial and realized that he had filled the needle with Lispro instead of Lantus, and if it hadn't been for that bubble we could have killed him.

4 - He can't ever just fucking play, because running around like a normal 6 year old tanks his blood sugar. I've seen him drop 160 points in 20 minutes and I don't think I'll ever be able to relax again in my life.

My brain is fried, and my body is exhausted. I just want to sleep. I just want to relax. But I can't. And I don't know when I ever will be able to.

Discussion Anxiety and T1 am i alone?

Ive been T1 since i was 18 and im 45 now. About 10 years ago i developed mild anxiety. My anxiety now evolves around new situations. Issue: anxiety kicks in stomach start to feel discomfort like bad gas, progressively gets worse until im puking for the next 24-48 hours bloods run high during these episodes and bringing it down requires a doubling of insulin or more( no food only water which i then puke back up). Its used to be once a year, then once every 6 months now it seems like every other month something sets me off. Im in good shape, bloodwork comes back in the green. Wtf? Anyone else?

I can't do this anymore, it is so exhausting...
I became depressed more and more and that changes my blood sugar radically, the Hba1C also went up by about 1%. My depression came not only because of diabetes, but that does not belong to this subreddit.

(I do get help though, that's kinda good)

I need help

I’m a 24M - Type one for 11 years. Around 5 years ago I started to develop a really big fear of insulin and hypos. It had gotten to the point where I was taking 1 unit of novolog a day then just taking my long acting and not eat very many carbs. As you can imagine I became very thin and not well. My family had me hospitalized because I hadn’t gone to the endo in years not even a regular doctor. I need help still. Regular therapists aren’t equipped to handle this. My endo just says take more insulin. I know what to do it’s not lost on me. I understand insulin to carb ratios just as good as anyone else. My problem lies with the fear of everything. I’m fucking scared. I’ve tried every therapist around me. I’ve switched endos. I’m now on a pump which was very scary for me. It seems like there is this hump I can’t get over I’m tired of having high blood sugar and scared all the time of my own body. I’m thinking about going to a residential program out of state to try that but im not sure if they know what to do with me.

Rant New Diagnosis at 16

Hi everyone. I am 16 years old and have been diagnosed with T1D for two months, and I feel hopeless. I was in DKA (blood sugar of 800) two weeks before starting my junior year of high school. I realize I am throwing a lot of numbers out, but numbers seem to be the only thing on my mind as of late. I used to have so many hobbies. Now I spend most of my time feeling inexpressibly jealous of my healthy peers and exhausted of the highs and lows. I hate the weight I gained. I am unavailable to my friends. I feel like a burden to everyone I know. My mom has no choice but to worry about my survival every second, which has taken an obvious strain on our relationship. I don't know what to do anymore. I know I am luckier than others: I was given a CGM (libre 3) straight out of hospital and just finished my Omnipod training this week. I keep trying to look in the right direction, but some days are just so so hard. I just feel so alone. Any honest advice would mean so much to me.

Supplies Medtronic 780G vs T-Slim: What's your opinion on the quality of the machine itself?

• Upvotes

Hi, all! Typical situation: I've got an out-of-warranty T-Slim that just had a motor failure and can't deliver insulin anymore, so I'm scoping out options for my next pump. A T1 friend was kind enough to lend me her old 780 to test out. From reading lots of posts in this forum, I gather that people have strong opinions in both directions about which closed loop system is better. So I plan to try a Simplera sensor and explore that whole aspect, but I'm also curious for those who have used both to hear what you think about the quality/durability of the machine itself.

At first glance, the 780G feels like a much sturdier piece of equipment. I used the older medtronic pumps for 15+ years before switching to the t-slim and while I loved the skinner profile of the t-slim, it always felt flimsier than the tank-like medtronic pumps to me. My t-slim was replaced twice while under warranty - once for a touch screen issue and once because it took an accidental plunge in water (but for less time/depth than it's allegedly rated for).

By contrast, I never had a medtronic pump fail on me. I used a couple of them for years beyond the warranty and at one point I had two 'back up' pumps on hand just because I upgraded when my insurance allowed for it but the old pumps still worked absolutely fine. I recently met someone at a party who was on year 10 using an old Paradigm and it was still going strong.

Obviously all of this is totally anecdotal, as are any reddit responses, but I'm curious to hear from others about experiences of these two pumps as machines. Was there any noticeable difference for you in the durability / quality?

Seeking Support/Advice Sensor Warm Up and Pump Worries

• Upvotes

Hi Everyone! I was diagnosed LADA last month at 35. Out of the blue, never got wildly sick, never hospitalized. Only thing that was weird was my vision changed suddenly from 20/20 to not being able to see distance. That lasted two weeks then went back to normal. Eye doctor told me to get checked. Yep.

Anywho my endo wants me on a pump and after lurking on this thread for a long time I realize it can help me in between meals and while sleeping. Great!

What I’m nervous about is it’s been taking my Dexcom 24 hours to get synced and right- meaning I’m manually testing before every meal because I don’t trust it and it’s off or way off. When I get a pump how do you handle this warmup problem?
I’m worried it’s going to be dosing me the wrong amount every time I get a new sensor.

Can you let me know how it goes?
TIA 💕

Seeking Support/Advice How to program to avoid the automatic post-low correction

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have a Tandem Mobi paired with a Dexcom, been on various pumps for over 20 years. I am fairly active and what I really, really, really hate is Control IQ giving me a correction bolus for the BG spike from correcting a low, which sends me in a seesaw with another low, another spike, another correction. Setting the temp rate to zero doesn’t help, and turning Control IQ off for an hour isn’t practical. Any thoughts or suggestions from other pumpers until Tandem figures out how to program a delay when a spike immediately follows a low? Thanks!

Discussion Very rough morning, slight dka maybe.

Last few days I didn't eat much because my insulin wasn't acting the way it should. High blood sugar . Didn't eat much at all tbh. Fast forward to last night. It finally came down around 6pm, and had some lightly breaded chicken and what not. The entire night sleeping my sugar was just low, nothing to bad. Woke up with very bad heart racing . Felt terrible, ketones elevated to small. I tried getting my bpm down, and needed food so nibbled on the safest carbs I had. Eventually ate pb crackers and some applesauce cuz my sugar was still going kinda low. But ketones elevated. Eventually ketones are down and they are kinda bouncing to trace to negative. I don't have a appetite and it's scary, insulin seems to be doing something for sure tho. But I need to eat something good soon. I still feel crappy and heart round still rough laying down even. Any thoughts or tips. Could be starvation ketosis? Or regular dka. I'm not sure.

Any good tips for GOOD carbs for ketones and to get my energy back basically so I can return to normal.

Diabetic parents: how are we doing?

I constantly see support groups for parents of type 1 diabetics but is anyone else absolutely swamped by kids and diabetes?

I feel like I neglect my diabetes a bit as a result of giving everything I have to my children but my partner and my mum friends don’t seem to see that baby sitting an organ and trying to maintain my needs is actually hard work. They also don’t seem to understand risks like holding my baby when my blood sugars drop.

My partner didn’t understand that I didn’t want to breastfeed because I was scared of my blood sugars dropping while I held baby. I pumped but dropped every time after and would spend 15-20 minutes on the floor trying to recover 😭

It’s hard enough being a parent but this takes the piss 😂😭anyone else feeling like this?

Which pump?

I’ve been on Omnipod for 15 years, but recently I’ve been considering the tandem mobi. I went from MDI to Omnipod, so I’ve never used a tubed pump. Anyone who has used both or even just considered both—pros and cons? Thank you!

Rant 29M just found out I have T1 diabetes.

29M and majorly shocked to learn I have T1. I started showing symptoms about a month ago. I was 135 pounds and a gym rat. First I noticed a serious plateau in my work out progress. I wasn’t gaining weight or going up in strength. Confused by this I tried some pre work outs and supplements. Then came the super frequent bathroom breaks and thirst. I was drinking close to 8 bottles of water a day plus Gatorades. I was running to the bathroom about every hour at least and started waking up 6+ times a night to pee. I didn’t know what was wrong with me but I was so tired all the time. The deep set fatigue made it so hard to go to work and between that and the peeing I thought I just needed a break from the gym. Next came the stomach cramps and loss of appetite. I struggled to finish meals and eventually developed the worst indigestion of my life. All of these symptoms piled up over the course of a month until I started completely shutting down. A walk to the toilet left me gasping for air and a full shift of work felt impossible. Last weekend I was laying on my bedroom floor vomiting and hitting my wifes inhaler when she finally had seen enough and demanded I go to the ER. I got dressed but couldn’t make it to the stairs because I felt like I was suffocating. We called an ambulance and when it arrived my blood oxygen and heart rates were fine, they checked my blood sugar and told me it was at 360+ and asked if I was diabetic. I told them no. A few hours in at the hospital and I got the news that I was infact diabetic T1. I have no family history of it and never knew it was even a possibility. My A1C was over 15. I spent 4 days in the ICU and 2 days in the step down unit. Then they gave me some pens, a Dexcom G7, and sent me on home. I currently don’t have health insurance though I’m now in the process of getting signed up through my work and learning about this whole new world I live in. When I was hospitalized I weighed only 100 pounds and that broke my heart. A week later I’m already back up to 122 pounds because I’ve been eating like crazy (while watching my sugar and taking my insulin.) the first few days on my own I was hitting the 300s often but now I’m getting it down to a healthy and manageable range.

I write all this just to say hi to my fellow diabetics. I’m new here but I’m doing my best and hope to live a long, healthy, and happy life balancing my tasty low carb meals with my insulin.

Rant So over this

Post image
10 Upvotes

I’m new to this type 1 game. Got diagnosed with LADA in April of this year.
It was my birthday yesterday so I wanted a treat. We ordered sushi for dinner. I was at 9.0 at 5pm right before eating and took tons of insulin for one roll and half an order of dumplings.
I thought I was doing so good. Went low but didn’t take anything to correct it. Started going high and took more insulin before bed.
Woke up in the middle of the night at 15… so I took even more insulin. And started going down.
Woke up this morning and haven’t eaten anything and I’m going back up.

Like how long are carbs in my body for?? Should I be taking more nighttime insulin? Just stay away from rice? 😩

I don’t know WHAT is going on with my dexcom but I had to change it a day early. Now I’m used to weird readings for the first day but this isn’t even CLOSE to what my meter is saying (I’m sitting 169 on the meter rn), I’m about to just rip this thing off and not use them anymore 🙃 I can’t even fix it!!

For those that have had one, did you need to increase your basal? Lower your I:C ratio?

Pixel 10 Incorrect readings/Correct on pump

Just spent half hour on the phone trying to understand what's going on with my phone and G7 sensors.

Almost every sensor since I started with them in the spring will give me 100% accurate readings on my pump, but almost every session, at some point my pixel 10 will get stuck on 7.2mmol and won't move until I restart the phone. The pump reading is always correct. Dexcom says this is a sensor problem and not a problem with my phone, but when I delete all the old bluetooth connections on my phone, it doesn't do it.

They said there are two channels in the sensor to transmit the info - one channel to the pump, and one to the app. This only happens when I forget to delete all the old dexcom bluetooth connections. I asked why the different channels would transmit different numbers from their source and he just repeated that there are two different channels to transmit the information.

The agent seemed to be getting really annoyed with me saying it seemed to be a phone or bluetooth issue. They told me re-starting the phone is not a step in their recommended troubleshooting and then seemed surprised that re-starting it completely fixes the problem and the sensor works fine for the rest of the session and that it never happens twice with the same sensor. They want me to calibrate on my phone next time and not re-start the phone at all.

They stressed I should be calling every time to get them replaced and don't recommend continuing using the sensor when it does this, but it's been almost every sensor since I started using them. I also started on the G7 and got my new phone at the same time, so I don't know what would have happened if I was still on my Pixel 6.

Is anyone else having these kind of issues? Dexcom seems very adamant this is not about my phone or bluetooth connections and said deleting the old bluetooth connections is probably a coincidence.

I've heard of people getting inaccurate readings but I don't think I've heard of people getting one value on their phone and another on their pump. Anyone else dealing with this or anything like this?
