Why? You scared we might have one of these as cops chasing your ass on the street while its fully charge?

u/dec10 Apr 19 '26
The original cut of this scene has 30 more seconds of the shooting. Verhoeven was not going for subtlety.
29
u/Wermine Apr 19 '26
Me as a kid "whoa, cool robot movie". Missed all the actual points of the movie. Also helped that I'm not from USA, so can't identify with the cities, parodies of actual people and such on these kinds of products.
14
u/willflameboy Apr 19 '26
It's insane how gruesome Robocop still is, despite Verhoeven having had to tone it down in order to pass the censors.

Maybe you’ll be able to change language on the cop robot that’s arresting you?
You have twenty seconds to comply!
“I no speak English bro”
¡Tienes veinte segundos para cumplir!
“Que?”
你有二十秒的时间服从!

I'm picturing a smaller but faster battery switching robot.
One detaches and goes back to recharge and another one just climbs up the sprinting robot and attaches on to the new one. Or even just a quadcopter drone that does the same thing.

It’s freaking amazing! But some of these kids need to watch Terminator and Robocop and Matrix. Because they are good movies……

u/Arcosim Apr 19 '26
What's terrifying is the advance in just a single year. I remember the first iteration of this marathon last year and people were laughing at how clunky most robots were. Now, just a year later, they just beat the human world record by 7 minutes.

You sort of can. I have osteoarthritis in my knees and regularly get injections of hyaluronic acid (Duralane). It’s annoying for the first few days but then I’m good for about a year or so.

I posted a video of comparison of 2025 race vs this year's. reddit filter blocked it, no idea why.
Honor's 'Lightning' robot won this year's Half-Marathon. In fact Honor took first 3 places. Multiple robots completed the race in sub-51 mins, faster than human record. Remote controlled robots had 1.2x penalty. Nearly 40% of the 100+ participating teams used full autonomous navigation.
the human record sits at 56:42. The 1st place robot did it in 50:26 with Autonomous navigation. In fact another remote-controlled Honor robot completed in 48m 19s, but because of 1.2x penalty, it didn't win.

u/Obvious_Advice_6879 Apr 19 '26
For anyone wondering, that's an average speed of 15.6mph or a pace of 3:51 minutes per mile.
I wonder what the theoretical speed limit for a bipedal robot would be. The human record for a single mile is 3:43 so this isn't quite there but I'm sure it'll get better.

It really doesn't make sense to compare them to humans.
269
u/Subpxl Apr 19 '26
I think it does because these are designed to mimic human movement. If they were on wheels or were propelled in some other way I would agree with you.
43
u/fancczf Apr 19 '26
It’s pretty insane they are able to run fully autonomously for that kind of distance at that speed, with complex terrain and environment. We have really came a long way in just the past 20 years.
18
u/Actual_Noodle Apr 19 '26
Meanwhile it struggled to stand still during the pit stop.
25
u/The_MadMage_Halaster Apr 19 '26
Of course, it's designed to run not be in one place. This might seem really odd, but it actually makes a lot of sense. Walking and running is just controlled falling, and it's actually easier to do that than to make it try to balance and stand in one place.
→ More replies (1)9
u/turtlepsp Apr 19 '26
I'm sure the majority of humans would have trouble standing still if they were running at that speed for any given moment of time.

u/Wonderful-Process792 Apr 19 '26
Yes, if this were a remote-controlled car and beat the humans despite the 1.2x penalty, nobody would think anything of it.

What world you prefer they compare them too? Cheetahs? Elephants? Dogs? Surely a human reference is the best way to provide a reference that the average reader will understand and connect with.
Edit: spelling. Damn swipe to type enshittification.

Sure it does, because that comparison gives people a more tangible sense of what these machines are capable of. We evaluate all kinds of things through relative metrics.

u/KiroBasik Apr 19 '26
I think you mistook the comment? "Faster than human record" just means in this instance that the autonomous robots did beat the record by the ones that were steered by humans.
And here it makes sense to make the comparison, because they were indeed still faster (for now) when a human did take control, but for the ×1.2 mutiplier they still did beat the official record, but not the real time.
3
u/cheetuzz Apr 19 '26
I think you mistook the comment? "Faster than human record" just means in this instance that the autonomous robots did beat the record by the ones that were steered by humans.
you’re right, because the human half marathon record is 57:20. While in the previous comment they said the “human [remote controlled] record was 56:42”
That was poorly worded, should have said “remote-controlled” instead of “human”.

are they using dry ice?
111
u/YoungLittlePanda Apr 19 '26
It looks like it because of the visible sublimation, and you don't see a trail of water behind the robot.
Also, makes more sense, because you don't want to have water near electronic parts.

Watch out when robots can service the other robots and be so efficient they can do it without stopping. When that happens I foresee bigger issues for humankind
40
u/GravelySilly Apr 19 '26
It's getting there. Some of China's newer patrol robots can swap their own batteries. They just have to swing by their base periodically to pick up a new one and put the old one in a charger.
21
u/Next-Food2688 Apr 19 '26
And the next step is robots building robots with robot instruction. Imagine AI designed robot that can build itself, repair itself, and rule the world.

I used to look at things like this as a marvel and a sparkling advancement of human ingenuity that will possibly make life better for all.
Now I just start to worry about the ways it will be used to either take the job of a human worker, be used for reasons of greed/exploitation of people(s), or used to oppress other people(s) or even us.
But usually it's a mixture of all of those reasons :,-[

What type of motors do robots use for knees, hips, and similar functions?
7
5
u/disasterly213 Apr 19 '26
The body is a miracle that it does all this constantly and in equilibrium for our whole lives without the need of servicing - generally.

Why can’t humans get this?? I don’t want a cup of water and an orange slice. I want an IV and a cortisone injection in my knee!! lol

Let’s be honest, at a human marathon pit stop we’d all want our junk sprayed with lubricants and a ice back pack.

The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In any case, most actual fighting will be done by small robots, and as you go forth today remember your duty is clear: to build and maintain those robots.
