Clayface ‘Clayface’ - Early Social Media Reactions Megathread
Discussion of all reactions for Clayface go here.
The below may contain spoilers. It will be updated as more come out.
Sample reactions
Patrick Dougall - I’ve seen Clayface… and Mike Flanagan’s having a really good October! 👍
Miguel Araiza - CLAYFACE is a win for DC. It's more interested in being a character study with body horror than a superhero movie (and that works in its favor). Its low budget sometimes limits it, but overall it works
kristbozaia - Clayface is a top 5 DC Film ever, I couldn’t believe how incredible it was
Chris Killian - CLAYFACE is incredible! It molds Matt Hagen’s tragic backstory into a wildly gory spectacle. There are some crazy unique body horror moments that’ll make you squirm, but what I loved most is it’s also a heartfelt throwback to a bygone era of classic gothic romance films. The movie does such a fantastic job introducing us to Clayface, it’ll be an absolute shame if we don’t see him go toe-to-toe with Batman in the future. However, don’t go hoping for Bats. Just go see Clayface because it’s an unsettling and viscerally grotesque monster movie.
Conorville - #clayface is everything you want from a villain led movie. No more anti hero Bs, DC understands that tragic Villains can exist. I was harsh with Lanterns and Supergirl so I went into this movie excited, but nervous. This movie reminds you why Batman villains are different. The movie stays grounded and self contained, focusing solely on the story and not the larger DCU which imo only benefits it.
Brandon Davis - #Clayface is freakishly awesome. Watkins makes an unsettling Gotham and gets very creative with Clayface’s abilities. Gruesome, dark moments and twisted ideas at play. Tom Rhys Harries is a star, literally in the movie and for his performance. Dude kills it. Well done by all. James Watkins was showing off in #Clayface, flexing some practical effects and brutal ideas. Big win for horror fans. It’s really visceral, both in violent/bloody sense but also mentally. It’s a mindf-ck at times with some dark, true villain turns by the end. Whewwwww. It’s really just what those Spider-Man villain movies wanted to be.
DCUBrief - 'CLAYFACE' is a shockingly gruesome horror that holds NOTHING back. It goes all the way with it’s grotesque imagery. Surprisingly, it’s also funny. The film goes from darkly depressing to wacky, colourful, and absurd. A welcome change of tone that proves the DCU can do it all.
Steven Weintraub - Clayface was fantastic. An awesome addition to the DCU that doesn’t require any knowledge of DC to enjoy. It’s a hard R and loaded with brutal scenes that really surprised me. Audience freaked out a few times during my screening to what was being depicted on screen. Strong recommend.
Daily Kryptonian - Clayface is something special, original, and completely different from any comic book movie we’ve seen before! It makes you feel for a villain and question whether psychological pain can be more devastating than physical pain, and I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen for a second. Gotham has never felt this dangerously exciting… can’t wait to watch this PEAKface again!!
Multiverse of Color - Clayface is a thriller that blends a propulsive Gotham crime story with shockingly gruesome body horror. This movie sets a new standard for the comic book villain movie and will win over DC and horror fans alike. @ClayfaceMovieDC @DCOfficial #clayfacemovie
Peter Gray - #Clayface has that comic book flair but that theatricality doesn’t diminish how BRUTAL it is! Dark, violent, with little levity to offset the nastiness, this is an exciting addition to Gunn’s DCU. Tom Rhys Harries brings equal boyish charm and quiet menace to the role
Shahbaz - #CLAYFACE: the body horror and Tom Rhys Harris's performance are genuinely excellent, but the story and some bizarre choices make this an odd third entry for a DCU still finding its identity. There's a lot to love here, even if not all of it works
Just Alexx - #Clayface is a MASSIVE step for DC Studios. It’s gross, it’s scary, and it’s a FANTASTIC entry. Tom Rhys Harries is awesome as Clayface, and I hope we get to see more DC villains getting their spotlight in the future
Naz Perez - Clayface is one of the best movies of the year!! Taking a lesser-seen villain from Batman’s Gotham and giving him this wildly funny, gloriously grotesque spotlight feels inspired. It’s perfectly gory, unexpectedly hilarious, anchored by a sensational Tom Rhys Harries performance I’d put among the decade’s best. Naomi Ackie as Caitlyn Corr is equally mesmerizing.
Jenna Anderson - Clayface completely blew me away. It’s disgusting, inventive, and astonishingly funny and earnest. It slots into the DCU so effortlessly. You owe it to yourself to see it in a theater filled with other people’s reactions.
HeyChalice - Oooweeeee I can finally get this off my chest! ‘Clayface’ is one of the best horrors of the year! Was not expecting it to perfectly mesh horror and romance! Warner Bros & DC cooked with this & Mike Flanagan does not miss with his scripts🔥Tom Rhys Harries shines in this gritty and gruesome introduction to the character in a feature film! GREENLIGHT THE SEQUEL ASAP!
James Gunn - All hail James Watkins and this whole team
Bill Bria - CLAYFACE is the proof of concept of DC Studios: a movie that works on its own first, all shared universe considerations secondary. That it’s also a well-written, beautifully acted body horror/mad science/antihero monster movie à la THE FLY and DARKMAN is the bloody cherry on top.
Stephane Ceretti - #Clayface was freakin awesome. Like … really really really good 👍
Hollow Coded - These eyes have seen Clayface and can confirm this is officially my favorite movie in the DCU. They really did it with this one guys holy #Clayface
Jim Vejovoda - Clayface is a gritty throwback to not only the hardboiled revenge thrillers and low-budget horror flicks of the ‘50s and ‘60s but also to the cult classics of the ‘80s and ‘90s that paid homage to them. A fun time
Travis Trujillo - Clayface rips! I attended the first-ever screening this past Sunday and my theater CHEERED. This is a straight-up body horror/monster movie that doesn’t hold back. It’s a special and GORY W for the DCU! You guys aren’t ready for this one!
Who Let Us Out - The hype for Clayface is REAL. Between Tom Rhys bringing the character to life and the promise of a darker, more psychological take on a comic book villain, we got something truly special.
Haunted Star - #Clayface is one of the best DCU projects by a landslide. Brilliant story and character moments. This is made with love. It setups up for BIG things to come in the most exciting way I seen since 2025. Bring your tissues but not because it’s a sad movie.
POC Culture - #CLAYFACE is so gross & yet you can’t look away. I’m not a fan of horror but this was a masterpiece. @TomRhysHarries delivers a star making performance that’s charismatic & horrifying. Naomi Ackie is equally as powerful. I watched the entire movie like this 🫣 I’m blown away
Raiders of the Lost Podcast - Clayface is my biggest surprise of the year. Completely unhinged body horror that you’ll have to watch through your fingers with an emotionally resonant core. Wildly creative filmmaking. My favorite DCU project so far @ClayfaceMovieDC
JT Lopez - #CLAYFACE was great! this is what i wanted out of a clayface origin film! the tension building was nuts, the practical effects used in this were incredible and the horror elements sprinkled throughout really makes me happy this releases in october!
Amon Warmann - I can finally say how much I dug #Clayface! A focused character study that finds ways to be creatively brutal, while not forgetting to have some fun. Tom Rhys Harries, Max Minghella, and especially Naomi Ackie on fine form. Along with #Lanterns, a great bounce back for the DCU.

Swamp Thing Peter Safran on James Mangold's 'Swamp Thing' film: "It’s moving forward. Literally, we're waiting on a draft. James Mangold’s a fantastic filmmaker...he was busy...so we were waiting for [him] to come up for air and when he did, he's like, 'I'm ready now.' And that was it."
Safran's full quote on the Swamp Thing film:
"It’s moving forward. Literally, we're waiting on a draft. James Mangold’s a fantastic filmmaker — [Logan's] obviously one of our favorite superhero movies, but plenty of other great, great films. He was busy making his Bob Dylan movie with [Timothée] Chalamet, so we were waiting for Mangold to come up for air, and when he did, he's like, 'I'm ready now.' And that was it."

Clayface Matt Reeves was developing 'Clayface' with Mike Flanagan before James Gunn and Peter Safran were in charge of DC
From the interview article:
Warner Bros. sent Batman News a press kit for Clayface that included a new interview with Clayface producer (and The Batman director/writer) Matt Reeves. In the interview, Reeves explained where the idea for a Clayface movie came from -- and it actually predates DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
After The Batman, Reeves had the idea of doing origin stories for Batman's Rogues' Gallery. He was particularly looking for ways to do "really cool, smaller horror films". Around that time, Mike Flanagan came to him with the idea for a Clayface horror movie. The two started developing Clayface, and then James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC (the co-CEOs started in November 2022).
Reeves and Flanagan pitched Clayface to Gunn and Safran, they loved it, and wanted to make it part of the new DCU they were working on. Check out the full interview with Matt Reeves below.
How did the concept for Clayface begin?
Matt Reeves: "After The Batman, I was very excited about this idea. The Batman was not a Batman origin story, but what it did—because it was his first appearance in the city—it was an entree into origin stories for the Rogues’ Gallery. After the movie, when we started working on the script for the next Batman, we began thinking it’d be really exciting to develop a bunch of stories that could be genre stories that related to the Rogues’ Gallery characters and explore their origins. And one of the things I got very excited about was the idea of looking for ways to do really cool, smaller horror films."
"And [Screenwriter] Mike Flanagan came to me and said he had been a huge fan of Clayface—especially the iteration that came from the animated series—and had a passion about doing a horror story with Clayface at the core. So, we started developing it. And as that story started coming together, becoming this sort of tragic love story—The Fly meets this horror thriller—James [Gunn] and Peter [Safran] took over DC Studios, and that was one of the first things we pitched to them. They loved it so much, they wanted to make it one of the DCU movies. And we got very excited about the idea of taking this story into the DCU."

Clayface 'Clayface' star Tom Rhys Harries regarding what DC movie villain he wants to team up with to fight Batman: "I love what Colin [Farrell]’s done with the Penguin. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say that. Yeah, I mean, it’s so good…It could work."

Lanterns Chris Mundy on if Lanterns S2 will resurrect Hal Jordan: “I have absolutely no idea.. there’s a million what ifs… the good thing about fiction… it wasn’t like ‘we’ve got a great idea for S2 and 3, so let’s layer in’… you take a look at what you made… then you go from there.”

Clayface 'Clayface' star Tom Rhys Harries says his DCU villain could definitely take Batman out: "Clayface's so overpowered comparative to Batman. I can become anyone [&] anything. Once Matt [Hagen] gains control over his powers, then you're in a space where you're like, 'What do you want to use these for.'"

The Brave & The Bold Exclusive: 'The Brave and the Bold' to start production in 2027.
From the article:
James Gunn and DC Studios have been eager to get Batman off the ground, and we can exclusively back what Apoc Horseman reported on X: The Brave and the Bold is shooting for a late 2027 start of production.
Deadline previously described the project as being in early development, but it's further along than that. No actors have been cast yet, and it's still unclear to us whether Andy Muschietti remains attached to direct the film, there's been no recent update on that front.
We’ve been told the studio is being extremely cautious with the character, fully aware of how important Batman is to the DCU.

Clayface 'Clayface' director James Watkins says "you feel the shadow of Batman inherently" in the Gotham-set DC movie.
From the article:
Clayface director James Watkins has opened up about creating the oppressive atmosphere of Gotham for the upcoming DCU movie – and how that makes it feel like a certain Dark Knight is breathing down your neck at every turn.
"We looked at a lot of 1980s and 1990s street photography," Watkins told SFX magazine. "There was a documentary called Everybody Street, and I looked at a lot of the work of the photographers in it. It captures the bawdy glamor of New York, slightly edgy, slightly eccentric, slightly menacing, richly saturated colors."
But was presenting such an integral location of the DCU something that required a lot of overnight? On the contrary, Watkins confirmed that he was "not micro-managed at all" and had "real support" from James Gunn and DC Studios.
"We want the world [of Gotham] to be corrupt. We want it to be a city where litter doesn't get picked up, where there's a sense of decay, where there's dirt, where the canyons of these places are overbearing."
To that end, Batman – who hasn't yet been officially cast in the DCU despite being namechecked in Creature Commandos and Lanterns – will feel right at home in the crime-laden streets of Gotham. Clayface may chart the origins of Bat-villain Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), but the Caped Crusader's presence will be felt in spirit, if not necessarily on camera.
"You're in a city called Gotham. So I guess you feel the shadow of the Bat inherently," Watkins said. "Because of the nature of where you are."
