I wanted this to work as a front-to-back listen, not just the five songs everyone already knows.
A few I'd start with:
Momoko Kikuchi – Adventure
Hiroshi Sato – Say Goodbye
Minako Yoshida – 頬に夜の灯
Tomoko Aran – Midnight Pretenders
Taeko Onuki – 4:00A.M.
Plastic Love and Mayonaka no Door are in there too, surrounded by deeper cuts.

Nighttime City Pop
Also call as Urban Style City Pop
Visuals and Scenery: The visuals focus on the vibrant nightlife of Japan, neon-lit streets, urban reflections in the rain at night, and the tipsy dance floors.
Music and Arrangement: Strong rhythms with a strong Funk, Boogie, Disco, or Soul/R&B influence, emphasizing bass dynamics and dreamy synthesizer sounds.
Core Emotions: Creating a glimpse into the decadent illusion of the bubble economy era, urban loneliness, ambiguous romantic feelings between men and women, and the quiet detachment after a long night at work.

Holy grail thrift store find.
Technics SL-XP6 CD player (Manu. Nov. 1988)
Naoko Kawai - 9½ Nine Half (1986) album used for demonstration.
It works 100%. No skips, laser and motor works great.
Just missing a battery door, just slightly dusty on the inside. And in overall great condition for a nearly 40 year old player.
Need to get some lithium grease for the worm shaft. Love the solid metal body of this. Been using it for well over 4 hours with no issues.
I have a very diverse player line up now. Some old, some ancient some modern. :)

Recently discovered and fell in love with city pop, so I knew I had to bring some vinyl records home with me during my trip to Japan. Pretty happy with what I’ve managed to find so far! Still have another week or so here and plenty more on my wish list, so hopefully I’ll be adding a few more to the collection before heading home.

The debut single by 1986 Omega Tribe. Released in 1986.
The CD was produced featuring vocals from three different singers: Kiyotaka Sugiyama, Carlos Toshiki, and Masato Arai.

So I've been into J-Pop for quite a few years. But I never knew what City Pop was. But yesterday I accidently came across Fantasy by Meiko Nakahara and I was absolutely blown away.
The silky vocals, the deep jazzy instrumentals and the complex sound, and that lush 70s feel of the pre-1973 oil crisis world is what I feel from the songs and its just epic

YOUR PICKS. MY MIX ))) Retro Japanese City Pop
Something a little different this time!
A few days ago, I posted my Obscure Japanese City Pop Mix here on r/ citypop.
In the comments, I got into a really interesting conversation with u/ W51976 about Yuji Toriyama, Japanese fusion, early Prince, and all the great Japanese music beyond the usual City Pop classics.
Then he asked if I could make a DJ mix using a list of his favorite tracks.
Of course, I said yes! 😎
When I looked through his selections, I was genuinely fascinated.
As a Japanese DJ, I have my own way of selecting and connecting tracks, but his musical choices were quite different from mine.
And that's exactly what made this project so interesting!
His list jumped between City Pop, AOR, funk, disco, fusion, technopop, idol pop, and more.
Some combinations were ones I probably wouldn't have thought of myself.
I left out a few tracks that didn't quite fit the mix, but otherwise stayed as close as possible to his selections.
The result is a 42-track journey through retro Japanese music, seen through another listener's ears and mixed through mine.
His picks. My mix. Our shared love of Japanese music.
A big thanks to u/ W51976 for the inspiration, the fantastic selections, and for helping come up with the title!

Hope you enjoy it!
And I'm curious — if you were putting together a mix of your own Japanese music favorites, would your selections look anything like this? 💿
