Want to ask about a personal health issue or post your tongue pictures? Read this first!

It's very common on /r/ChineseMedicine that people ask our community what Chinese Medicine disorders they might have, either by posting their tongue pictures or simply describing their health issues. This is a small guideline on what information to include in those posts so as to get the most from our community.

If you post your tongue picture

  • Always remember to respect rule 5 and tag you tongues pictures as NSFW and spoiler. Some people just don't want to see close ups of your tongue so make it a choice!

  • Your tongue should be well lit (preferably with natural light), high resolution, and in focus. We should be able to see the entire tongue body, from tip to root. You should not have had coffee or other strongly colored beverages or foods before taking tongue pictures. If you brush your tongue, please refrain from doing so before taking tongue pictures.

In all cases

Try to include other health information that are relevant in Chinese Medicine diagnosis, particularly around these points (obviously only share what you're comfortable sharing):

  • Temperature (any aversion to heat or to cold? Do you often have fever?)
  • Sweat (do you sweat too much?)
  • Thirst (do you often feel unusually thirsty, or the contrary? Do you feel more attracted to hot or cold drinks?)
  • Appetite (good or bad?)
  • Digestion (digestion problems?)
  • Bowels (frequency, texture, color, any pain?)
  • Urination (frequency, color, any pain?)
  • Pain anywhere in the body (headache, chest, abdominal, etc.?)
  • EENT (eye, ear, nose, and throat --> any issue with any of them?)
  • Mood (often angry, sad, anxious, scared, etc?)
  • Sleep (any issues?)
  • Energy (low/high?)
  • Skin (any skin issues? How does your skin look: bright, lusterless, pale, moist, dry, etc.?)
  • If a woman: menstruation, leukorrhea, number of children, childbirth, miscarriages and abortions
  • Any history of old diseases as well as your view on health issues you might currently have

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this post, especially /u/pibeautheconqueror and u/Standard-Evening9255

Patient inquiry I cant stop farting on this herbal formula.

I (34F) have been struggling with infertility. Have done two failed IVF embryo transfer. Found out i have an autoimmune clotting disorder that increases risk of miscarriage and stillbirth due to clots in the placenta.

I also have very weak digestive system that can easily get constipated or have diarrhea. Have experienced qi deficiency where I couldn't pass soft stool. I would experience whole body sweat, skin flushing, pale, dizziness and heart palpitations when I have these episodes. I also have large blood clots when im on my period but havent been diagnosed with endometriosis.

I was prescribed this herbal formula to consume twice per day. I get ridiculously gassy and cant stop farting. Farts are odorless but stomach keeps making noises. I also get super thirsty. I was told from another TCM doctor that this formula is too heaty.

I paid almost a thousand dollars for this. How can I salvage or boost my spleen to improve digestion? I was told this formula can help with my next IVF transfer.

Hong Kong TCM for English Speaker

Hello redditors of r/ChineseMedicine! I’m traveling to HK for the first time in December and am eager to experience TCM as I’ve never tried it, in way that is culturally enriching / educational, hopefully fun, and also beneficial for my health. I saw a youtuber who went to a city in Mainland China where she showed a shop where you could tell shopkeeper (or perhaps a TCM practitioner) about your health concerns / needs and they would make a custom tea blend for you, you could also drink some there if you wanted. I’m wondering if Hong Kong has anything like this that would be friendly for an English speaking tourist. After reading this sub I’m actually interested to dive deeper , so i’d also be open to seeing a practitioner who could make dietary recommendations and recommend other health practices. Thank You!

Patient inquiry Convince Me To See a Chinese/Eastern Medicine Dr.

Hi! I’m 22 and I live in GA. I have hashimotos and fibromyalgia. I have struggled with health since I was 13 and I’m finally saying no more! I struggle with chronic fatigue and brain fog the most but I also experience pain, hair loss, etc. It’s only getting worse and in a world full of self-help and random cures, idk where to turn. I’ve looked into acupuncture and Chinese herbs in ATL and it looks very promising. My only concern is that NOTHING has been able to help the fatigue at all. No doctor has been able to offer me a treatment to alleviate that symptom, only pain killers, etc. I’ve seen a few testimonials claiming acupuncture and herbal medicine helped with fatigue but I need some convincing. Is Chinese Medicine worth it? Do I have a good shot at finally getting better with this?

Safe Needle Handling

Hi everyone. I’m new to acupuncture and have some concerns about my practitioner’s needle handling practices. I noticed that my practitioner stores the needles in a lidded container that is filled with gauze. I’ve never seen them open new packages of needles nor have I ever observed them dispose of the needles in a sharps container. I asked the practitioner if the needles were single use and they said yes…but I am still concerned that safe needle handling is not happening and that I could’ve been poked with used or contaminated needles. I spoke with my general doctor about this and she’s suggesting I get tested for hiv and hepatitis. Am I blowing this out of proportion or am I valid in feeling concerned about this? Thank you.

Disharmonies associated with worse labor pain

I’m approaching the birth of my second child and I didn’t tolerate labor pain as well as I was hoping the first time around. I’m curious which disharmonies are associated with worse or more intense labor pain / contractions or how TCM approaches preparing for a smooth labor?

Traditional Chinese Medicine in China – Places to Visit?

Hi everyone! In three weeks, I’m travelling to China for three weeks, visiting Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Yangshuo, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong.
I’ve recently become really interested in traditional Chinese medicine and would love to explore this passion during my trip.
Does anyone have recommendations for interesting museums, traditional Chinese pharmacies, herbal shops, or other places where I could learn more as a curious beginner? Even somewhere beautiful or historically interesting would be great!
Any tips or hidden gems are welcome. Thank you! 😊

Tried Ling Gui Ba Fa (true solar time) for my wife's headache — sharing the experience, curious about others'

My wife had a stabbing pain at the back-left of her head for a while. One morning it got worse and spread behind her left ear down to her throat. She felt very cold without any cold symptoms, was foggy and exhausted, and turning her head hurt.

I have a small tool that uses true solar time to give the two Ling Gui Ba Fa points for the current moment. She was too cold to sit up for gua sha, so she lay down, and I rested my fingers on the points (no needles) while reciting a mantra. After a while I felt a strong pulsing under my fingers, especially at Zu Lin Qi. She fell into a deep sleep fast (normally she can't nap during the day), had vivid dreams, and woke up clear-headed, warm and energetic. That evening I did one more ~20 min session (Zu Lin Qi came up again as the paired point). She slept well and woke without discomfort.

To be clear, this is one personal experience, not a claim that it treats anything, and if symptoms like these come back we'd get them checked by a doctor. I'm curious:

  • Has anyone used Ling Gui Ba Fa with finger pressure instead of needles?
  • Do you calculate it with true solar time or clock time?
  • What's your experience with Zu Lin Qi for head and face discomfort?

I've had extremely itchy, dry and flaky skin behind one ear for several months. Today in a moment on anxious mindlessness I just kept scratching and now the skin in the crease has now split open and is red, raw. Why is this happening?

Gastro Relfux

Good Morning,
I’ve been on gastro reflux tablets for the last 7yrs due to a hiatus hernia. These pills seem to make my stomach feel quite regularly that it doesn’t work the way it should. Last year I had to have an iron infusion which they blamed on the gastro pills. Lately I’ve had problems also with my throat which they want me to take a second gastro pill. How does TCM deal with gastrointestinal/acid reflux issues? Thanks & cheers 🍻 🙏

Perimenopause

TCM taught me the menstrual cycle didn’t need to be a painful monthly ordeal. As a woman ages into perimenopause and then menopause what changes should she be making to her lifestyle to have a smoother transition? I’m familiar with western herbalism’s take. I’d love to hear TCM’s.

TCM Herbal mix for loose stool, bloating, Ibs after antibiotics

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello,

I took antibiotics 10 months ago, and ever since then, I have been experiencing soft, mushy stools (usually once a day when following a bland diet) or diarrhea when I eat foods that are higher in fat. I also suffer from excessive gas and bloating. I do not have SIBO, but when the gas gets trapped and I cannot pass it, I develop abdominal pain.

My diet has also become very restricted because I seem to have developed intolerances to many foods.

I have received this herbal blend, and I was wondering whether you think it would be suitable for my symptoms?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

How are herbs and foods outside the classical materia medica classified in TCM?

Hi everyone! I'm curious whether herbs and foods that aren't part of the traditional Chinese materia medica can be classified using TCM theory, for example by their flavor, color, thermal nature, or meridian affinity.

Is there an established method for doing this, or is it mostly based on clinical observation over time? I'd also really appreciate any resources on the TCM classification of foods. Thanks in advance for your answers!

Fertility treatment - Ji Xue Teng and San Qi Fen

I have been seeing an experienced Chinese medicine doctor (he obtained his qualifications from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and worked in hospitals in China) for about 6 weeks now and he’s been giving me weekly acupuncture and weekly concoctions of herbs to treat fertility issues.

He will be away for a few weeks and gave me some extra medication for the next 2 weeks. He knows that I just ovulated and the next 2 weeks will be the luteal phase. I asked him if I could continue to take the medication if I get pregnant and he said yes.

I checked the ingredient list when I got home and saw the above 2 herbs and saw that they are not recommended for pregnancy. He did not include these herbs in last cycle’s luteal phase medication.

Can someone explain to me why he included them this time? Will they affect implantation? Or is he trying to more aggressively/less conservatively treat my underlying issues before I properly get pregnant to ensure a healthy pregnancy? (I had an ectopic pregnancy earlier this year). He is on leave now so I can’t ask him directly.

Thanks for your help. This is the full prescription (these are granules and this amount is for 2 week):

Oral: Sheng Bai Zhu 6.4g, Ji Xue Teng 4.8g, San Qi Fen 1.6g, Si Gua Luo 6.4g, Bai He 3.2g, Ju He 3.2g, Li Zhi He 3.2g, Bai Shao 6.4g, Fu Shen 6.4g, Yuan Zhi 1.6g, He Ye 1.6g
