What do you think would happen if the United States legalized cocaine?

I feel like the entire hemisphere would benefit and I’m curious to hear other thoughts.

My reasoning is that countries like Colombia would have no choice but to produce it safely, through well regulated businesses or lose that revenue entirely to someone else. Farmers are struggling everywhere and I’m sure plenty would be happy to shift production to grow coca if the usual growers can’t deliver. The product is worth 1/5 of Colombia’s GDP so I see no reason why they wouldn’t respond immediately.

Rural areas could safely develop behind legitimate businesses and governments would gain new tax revenue.

Traffickers in Mexico and Central America would lose their monopoly on transporting cocaine, costing them huge sums of money.

Cartels won’t disappear overnight, but they would be weaker and governments would be stronger— just like with the mob after prohibition.
