Hello r/bullcity! Today is the start of early voting, and we are seeing some great energy at the polls already. We've never done one of these before, but in honor of the start of early voting, let's do an AMA.

What do you want to know about politics in NC or Durham? What confuses you about how the Democratic Party operates? What questions do you have for a county party chair in the bluest county in NC?

Drop your questions below and we'll answer tomorrow, Friday 10/16 starting at 9:30ET.

Thought Jeans By the Sea was a boutique denim store

Came across "Jeans by the Sea" on my bike today exploring. First thought was there's not a sea really anywhere close to here, so it's gotta be like pairs of jeans, right? Wrong. It's a seafood place. Maybe I am just posting to laugh at my ignorance or something, but I am dead serious. I really thought this.

Local wrestling?

My son and I loved going to Deadlock Pro Wrestling events but they've shut it down and we haven't found any others like it. Are there any other independent wrestling events in the triangle?

Dashcam Footage Request, Road rager smashed my mirror off with their arm.

Figured I would throw this out there just in case. If you were on Juliette Road today at rush hour time and saw the guy driving on the wrong side of the road almost hitting you and many other cars and while trying to run me off the road. He ended up stopping in front of me, getting out, and smashing off my mirror with his arm. All because I waited safely to turn left onto Juliette, then stopped at the trail to let pedestrians cross. It set them off fierce...

I know at least 30 other cars went by so please DM me if you have footage, there is a police report

Scam Election Text

• Upvotes

Just wanted to spread word about a mass text going around saying election officials writing on your ballot invalidates it; this is a regurgitated stunt that’s been going on for years, to the point that the State BOE just had to release another statement about it (https://www.ncsbe.gov/news/press-releases/2026/10/14/fact-nc-election-workers-often-do-have-write-your-ballot). It’s state law (GS 163 - 166.45, 132.5, etc.) that counties be able to write on ballots to help organize/certify them, especially where absentee and early voting is concerned— hence Durham election officials writing on ballots. Widescale attempts to disrupt the review and audit process is the last thing a busy election needs!

False Alarm Reduction

Does anyone understand what would be considered a waivable false alarm fee? Our home security system was malfunctioning and went off incorrectly. We explained to the city during the appeal process that we were waiting for the alarm system company to come out and do repairs, and that the alarm was still faulty, but they denied our appeal request. I shared with them the invoice and the incident with video footage of the issue.

It’s outrageous to me that the city outsources this to another company in Texas. It makes the whole process wildly convoluted.

Side note: Has anyone had issues with specific alarm system providers in the area?

Is this a very new kudzu?

Patches of heart-shaped leaves sprouting from a few vines that are maybe 10 feet long...

They're on the old Mary Biddle Duke estate, on the south (that is, north-facing) side of the east-west ravine that runs east from Kent St behind the houses that Dickerson has built along Bivins.

It's not often that one has a chance to stop a kudzu infestation early.

What happened to DL checks?

I remember when I moved here to NC 33 years ago and for a long time there was always these driver license checkpoints. The cops would set up a ‘license check’ and you had to show your license to the officer. If you didn’t have it or there was an issue they would pull you to the side to check you out further.

Not debating the pros and cons or legality of it…. But what changed that they stopped this practice. I know I must have been through 7-8 of them in Durham and a few in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Orange County Sheriffs and Durham County Sheriffs. If there was a rise in crime whether it be a murder or several burglaries you were sure to run into a road block in that area. They would happen during the day, the evening and late night…

Were they stopped by the courts? Or just different policing styles? Public sentiment?

Does anyone else love celery but struggle with finding indoor space for it in the winter? I love growing celery as a hedge border because it's easy to grow and care for, but it's not a perennial. Does anyone have any suggestions for a long-stemmed hedge border plant that's suitable for partial shade and is an easy-to-grow perennial?

Pharmacy with Estradiol patches?

My pharmacy is out of Estradiol patches and doesn’t know when they will get more.

Anyone been able to fill a prescription for Estradiol in the last week? I can transfer my prescription but I don’t know who has it.

Edit: Found some at Harris Teeter. Thanks everyone!
