Mod Post Suggestions for the Sub Megathread

Alright this isn't a book suggestion post, it's a post about booksuggestions.

It would be nice to see what the users of this sub think would make a good idea. Changes, new rules, the works. Engagement is nice but more uncommon than we'd like to see. So we're hoping to get more people looking at posts, talking, and voting on good ones.

Can't guarantee anything would be implemented but they will be considered.

Mod Post Reminder Post about Self Promotion

I would like to remind all users that self promotion is banned by the subreddit's Rule 2.

Suspected self-promotion will be removed while repeated and confirmed cases of it will end up with a ban of some kind. If you continuously do it, especially with alt accounts, the book and author names will be added to the auto-mod's blacklist and automatically removed every time they are posted. We have had issues with this in the past and already put some authors in the auto-mod. Other book and lit subs have contacted us with reports of similar issues and we will be on the look out for the accounts named by them for similar behavior here.

We do not want to take actions we do not absolutely need to and the mod team operates with a philosophy of leniency and forgiveness but we will still enforce sub rules.

Other I just finished reading 1984, and I really really liked it, what other dystopian novels would you recommend me to read next?

I read animal farm first, I really enjoyed it so I immediatedly read 1984. Would you recommend me to read any other George Orwell books, or are there any dystopian novels from other authors I should read? Asking for advice because really I only recently started reading more often and I don't know of that many books so I don't know what to choose...

Fiction Books that changed your perspective

Hi! I’m looking for books that can help me better understand perspectives, cultures, and life experiences that vary from mine!

For context, I’m a white conservative Christian and I think that background shapes how I see the world. I think I’m pretty ignorant of experiences different than mine and I want to hear from authors that I haven’t encountered and have my assumptions challenged so I can better understand and love people.

I love fiction mysteries, thrillers, fantasy, and romcoms but I’m open to anything has reshaped (or expanded) your view of the world

A few books on my TBR include I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, The Personal Librarian, Before We Were Yours, The Henna Artist, Pachinko, Next Year in Havana, Allegedly, A Woman of No Importance, and A Pair of Aces. Are these good?

Thank you!

Self-Help Favorite Latin American authors / Most Overrated.

I’m interested to hear your guy’s thoughts on Latin American literature. I’m a relatively new reader, I’m Honduran and have a big interest in the region. So far I’ve read some of the classics everyone talks about like Marquez, Fuentes, Doñoso, Clarice Lispector, Juan Rulfo.

A lot of magic realism, which I enjoy but I’m interested in finding some other styles or maybe lesser-known works. I’m trying to dig deeper than all the famous classic works.

How do you guys discover new authors and books to read? I’m getting tired of just going with stuff that’s popular on Goodreads.

I really enjoyed The Obscene Bird of Night by Doñoso and that whole fever dream vibe.

- book worth re-reading

Thanks!

Fiction Reading slump – any recommendations for captivating and interesting books that have helped getting back into reading?

I have been in a reading slump for the last year. Among the books have tried reading (started but not completed) recently are:

Clara and the sun Kazuo Ishiguro

The remains of the day Kazuo Ishiguro

Mistborn Brandon Sanderson

Animal farm George Orwell

Mockingjay Suzanne Collins

Ulysses James Joyce

I'm not sure way I have a har time sticking with a book right now. The last book I remember I really enjoyed was Never let me go by Kazuo Ishiguro, that's way I tried he's other work, and I did actually finish A pale view of hills. I would like a book that hit emotional similar to Never let me go, but honestly I'm open for any exciting suggestions

I want something devastating, heart-ripping, mind destroying with good characters and good mind fucks.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Science Fiction novellas?

I teach middle school ELA, and I am planning a Science Fiction mini-unit for my 8th grader (yes, one student this year). I am approaching it from the Heinlein quote that sci fi helps us define what it means to be human.

We are going to read "Dark They Were" and "The Brave Little Toaster" (the Cory Doctorow version, not the movie), but I want to include a novella (or something no more than 150 pages or so) to flesh out the unit as an exploration of the genre.

What are some of your favorite short novels that could fit with the current goal (explain how sci fi explores the definition of humanity) and texts?

Please avoid the AI suggestions. I did ask Google first, so I already saw those.

Literary Fiction I need a book to read!

• Upvotes

Hello,

I’m in a major major reading rut. I was on a roll but went away for a month and fell off. I need to get back on track so I’m asking you kind strangers to help!

Some authors I love are :
Haruki Murakami
John Steinbeck
Isabelle Allende
Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Patti smith
Gloria Steinem
Joan Didion
Etc etc

I really like magical realism and weird novels, not so much into fantasy or period pieces. I like auto biographies and memoirs about rock and roll, 60s, or topics like that.

Please help !!!!! Open to anything

Thank you

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Dungeon Crawler Carl protagonist dynamic

Hi everyone,

I am about to finish DCC and I really enjoyed the dynamic between the two main characters.

I am looking for a pair, one over the top sassy character and a grounded friend. Banters, teasing, etc... Genre canbe anything

BUT

Not romance! I don't mind some, if it's a subplot and it's not forced, but I'd prefer frindship.

Bonus, if the the overall tone and sense of humour is also similar to DCC.

I'm past Hitchhiker's guide and I am yet to read Discworld, but it's so overwhelmingly long series 😃.

TY

Non-fiction Looking for book recommendations similar to "Left-Wing" Communism: An Infantile Disorder

Hi everyone,

I just finished reading Lenin's "Left-Wing" Communism: An Infantile Disorder and I am looking for recommendations that either build upon his arguments or provide a direct response to them from a similar or competing leftist perspective. Specifically, Left communist perspectives from those in support of council communism or the Dutch-German left that push back against a vanguard. : )

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Fantasy Books Like Hades (The Game)?

Hello!

I got back into reading this year after not seriously reading any books since I was a teenager. In the last few years I’ve completed maybe 10 books combined, all on Audible - and this year so far I’ve finished 33 books that I’ve actually been taking the time to sit down and read!

(No disrespect to audiobooks btw I still love them! I’ve just come to really appreciate how sitting down to read forces me to focus on one thing.)

Anyway I’m looking for books about Greek mythology: retellings of myths, fun spins on the genre, Hades is one of my favorite games of all time and that’s in large part because of the characters. Anything that really goes into the pantheon of gods, their relationships and their moral ambiguity would be super cool! Bonus points if everyone’s hot and/or queer.

I read Song of Achilles this year and it was one of my favorite books of my excursion back into reading. Thanks for helping an ex-voracious reader get back into the practice!!

Other Book recs for a new SAHW?

Hello, I have been a avid romance reader, however, I’ve transitioned to be a SAHW after being in the education field for 5 years due to a bad accident after falling off of a horse. I know it’s kind of niche but I would like to read books that may cater to my current transition, I’m open to all but would like maybe to explore beyond romance.

Psychology Is there a book about my specific encounter with emotional abuse?

Hi all,
While I understand I won’t find anything 1 to 1 considering the specificities of what I went through, I was wondering if you guys had any book suggestions that broached my particular experience of emotional abuse in a relationship.

Common themes included -
the cult-like deification of my partner as the only one who could ‘fix’ me, and my complementary debasement; forced confessions of ‘sins’ or wrong-doing (this is the central theme I’m struggling to find);
and mysogynistic beliefs as to the sexuality and purity of women.

As you can tell there are some heavily religious/puritan themes running throughout this, as such I am open to books about power dynamics of that nature. (Though keep in mind I am not religious nor was my relationship centred around it, so nothing too terminologically religious)

I am also not fussed as to the genre, though I prefer something non-fiction or adjacent.

Romance Someone give me suggestion on what book I should buy

I want to buy a novel of romance genre, with the enemies/rivals to lovers trope, I primarily haven't read romance novels before, romance is always a side plot in the novels I read

  • I want a novel which doesn't depend on the sex scenes or thirst traps carrying it, I don't mind there being a few, but it book shouldn't be centered around them (I don't remember what that kind of genre is called, it's popular among girls though)
  • the political scene in the world I will prefer if it is a side plot and not main plot like 2 enemy nations at war and the greatest fighters/minds fall in love,
  • also straight romance, being the primary romance
  • and main thing, I do not want a tragic ending with 1 or both of the leads dying

edit: It doesn't have to be romance genre either, I just want a book with really good romance with the enemies to lovers trope

Romance Book Recommendations

I am facing a reading slump, I want a romance novel with smut, but there should a good build up storyline as well, character development and good writting style. I just want a good/hot read that captivates me.

As of now I am not intrested in anything super natural or too outrageously disturbing.

I do like slowburn, groveling by MMC, sex written that actually makes you feel the story and that gets a bit too hot, Fun FMC & Serious MMC, Second chance, mafia or hockey ( but again good storyline)

Please help a friend out.
