I’m interested in the experiences and approaches of historians who are also practicing believers in a religion (any tradition). Historical method relies on empirical evidence, primary sources, archaeology, and critical analysis, yet many religious traditions contain narratives that appear to conflict with the consensus findings of history, archaeology, or the natural sciences.
Just some examples I have are below:
• Creation accounts versus deep time (age of the Earth and universe)
• Global flood narratives versus the lack of supporting geological evidence
• The biblical Exodus and conquest of Canaan versus the archaeological record
• Specific details in the Gospels (and the resurrection) versus what critical historical method can establish about the historical Jesus
• Traditional early Islamic narratives versus the picture suggested by the earliest non-Muslim sources and archaeology
As someone who is not religious myself I’m just really interested in finding anything out in relation to this topic, it’s something I’ve always pondered.
