For those who don’t know what’s going on, because it’s not a football thread:

This is one of the biggest rivalries in college football. It’s usually the last game of the regular season between Alabama and Auburn. They call the game the Iron Bowl. This particular year, both were among the top teams in football. So it wasn’t just bragging rights on the line, it was about playoffs too. So it’s a big game. Huge game.

It’s now tied and Alabama is going down the field . They run out of time but it’s reviewed and determined there’s one second left. So they get one more play.

In football, as long as you snap the ball with one second left, you get to finish the play. So they try to kick a field goal to win it. End of the game so even if he misses, they go it overtime. Usually a missed field goal is wide and goes out of bounds so no issue. But this one is a long kick. So he doesn’t miss wide, he misses short. The Auburn player catches it and tries to run it back. And he runs it all the way back for the win. It’s very rare to have a run back for a touchdown so to do it in that situation was crazy.

So you go from tied, maybe lose in a huge game to your rival, to running it back and winning on the last play of the game. Probably the greatest ending to a college football game in several years, maybe decades. It was insane.

u/Frodde1 28d ago

Thank you for explaining. I was sitting here thinking "surely that's more than a second".

13

u/DoctorHelios 28d ago

It’s an amazing second.

11

u/Sea_Part_1581 28d ago

Oh the mileage we got outta this second. Saban fought for it and regretted it.

2

u/SonOfMcGee 28d ago

Yeah, when time expires the current play just becomes the last play. It can still take as long as it needs to.

Sometimes when teams are behind and know this will be the last play, they try keeping it alive by constantly doing handoffs and backwards tosses and it looks almost like they’re playing rugby.

1

u/AdSimple1897 28d ago

That was exaclty my wifes version of "one second!"

9/10 explanation. I do have one note. Alabama fans were at the height of their obnoxiousness so this was cathartic for literally everyone except those cringe lords that yelled “roll tide” everywhere they went.

9

u/JOOOOSY 28d ago

Second note: at the start of the video you see the referee reviewing the play. It was initially determined time had expired and the game was to go to overtime. Alabama’s coach ( the kicking team) challenged the play and when the runner actually stepped out, triggering the referee review. The refs determined Alabama’s coach was correct, and added one second to the clock

5

u/ImmediateLobster1 27d ago

Challenge succeeded unsuccessfully.

To make sure the kicker had the best possible chance of making the field goal, Saban put more linemen on the field than usual for that type of play. The problem with that was they were too slow to catch the Auburn player and he was able to score. A rare poor decision from Saban.

1

u/Conscious_Ring_9855 26d ago

Defensive against the run was very poor!

5

u/_plays_in_traffic_ 28d ago

this and the one where the band and people start coming on the field while the return guy has the ball and is still in bounds in play are like the two at the top of my list for this type of game winner

3

u/tdfast 28d ago

That was a bit different as that was a hook and lateral play on the last play of the game when none team just constantly laterals the ball around trying to get a touchdown. That happens way more often than this.

1

u/retatrutider 28d ago

You can’t just say most of the thing but then not say, like, the rest of the thing.

https://youtu.be/AfIi0uBMNBI?is=coZMluvyYKsJkI-K

4

u/No_Poet_7244 28d ago

Small correction: this took place the year before the playoffs were introduced, so this game actually determined who would go to the SEC championship game (and then the BCS National championship game.)

3

u/Informal_Tell78 28d ago

I watched this happen live and it was so awesome seeing Alabama go down like that.

2

u/HardingStUnresolved 28d ago

I pulled over to a pawn shop and watched it on a random TV screen. I still don't remember why I was in a pawn shop. The more the clip comes up, I start to think I only went there to watch the last minutes of the game, because I was far from home and listening via AM radio broadcast.

3

u/glockster19m 28d ago

Lol you make it sound like this happened in 1974

2

u/HardingStUnresolved 28d ago

Fair, but 13 years ago streaming wasn't prevalent, if thrre was a stream it was likely an illegal rebroadcast. I was able to catch it on digital bunny ears via "legacy media" an SEC ON CBS broadcast, just things that ain't in existence anymore.

u/800oz_gorilla 28d ago

also, auburn and Alabama are in the same state. there are no professional baseball, basketball, hockey or football teams in Alabama. and the state is very divided on which team is their team. families are divided.

and when these football games are coming up, people bring their RVs (caravans to you Brits) to the stadium and area around it and party/hang out all week. massive canopies and generators on game day for people outside the stadium.

college football in Alabama is something else.

that German "Freddy" who toured the US got to see a friendly before the actual world cup games at auburn and was blown away.

2

u/Thermal_arc 28d ago

I'll add one more point I haven't seen mentioned. Auburn won the game against UGA immediately preceding this one with a final play that can only be described as divine intervention. A very poorly thrown ball that had no chance of being caught was tipped by two Ga players that were trying to play hero, and it more or less accidentally landed in the hands of the reciever who ran it the rest of the way for a game winning touchdown.

https://youtu.be/bQQmU6D2GfQ?is=wbVArD-uDli-8RJ7

Two games in a row (the last two of regular season) that absolutely defined the season and opened the door for championship games, both decided by absolute fluke plays. As significant as the kick 6 was, taking both games together paints the whole picture.

LSU vs Tennessee 2010 game is up there with best ending, too.

14-10, Tennessee. 23 seconds left. LSU runs for 1 yard to Tennessee 1 yard line. They hurry up, Tennessee defense substituting men, LSU hikes it at the last second even though they aren't ready. Ball hits LSU QB, fumbles, end of game.

TV displays "Final Score 14-10". Everyone starts leaving. Coaches shake hands. Teams start heading to locker room.

Reffs start huddling together. Defensive penalty on Tennessee. They had 13 men on the field. Game isn't allowed to end on a defensive penalty, even with time out. Reffs go get the teams from the locker room.

LSU gets 1 more play on the Tennessee 1 yard line. They punch it in for a touchdown. LSU victory.

Perfectly explained - 👌🏻

1

u/Nobodyknowstherules 28d ago

Great explanation! Well done.

Only one thing missing my friend, the name everyone calls the play: The Kick Six. Returning the kick for 6 points, but as it's legendary, it's gained an actual name. I'm not a fan of either team, but anyone that knows this rivalry knows the play by that name.

1

u/GunShowBob 28d ago

Great explanation, although I think this was right before the playoffs started.

u/Thermal_arc 28d ago edited 27d ago

Not typically, as a miss typically goes wide to one side or the other, and thus out of bounds. But this was a very long field goal attempt (basically a hail Mary), so Auburn put someone there just in case.

That's not to say a short field goal return has never happened, because it has happened a few times, but the overall circumstances of the rivalry, the stakes, and the details leading up to this play make it such a big deal.

Brilliant, man. Thank you for the explanation. It’s so good you took the effort to write that because people like me don’t understand this game.

1

u/BayouByrnes 28d ago

Excellent breakdown.

The only ending that I'd put above it is the MSU win over UM on a blocked punt at the end of regulation. That was insane.

2

u/SocnorbTheRoman 27d ago

Boise State Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl too

1

And to add to this: 109 yards is the longest possible play in football.

Yeah I’m a Bama fan and I watched this live at work. All I could do was chuckle and just shake my head, because I knew I just witnessed one of the best endings to a football game I will ever watch.

1

u/Ilela 27d ago

As a European who read "For those who don’t know what’s going on, because it’s not a football thread" I wondered why you said "In football, as long as you snap the ball with one second left, you get to finish the play." when it's wrong.

On second reading i finally understood you meant american football

1

u/Ornery_Hair3319 27d ago

Thanks for this.

1

u/MetalLinkachu 27d ago

I’ll give you this game was way more important than the game I’m about to mention, but the great lest reversal of fortune at the end of a game is the Michigan State Spartans beating hunter Michigan Wolverines on the final play in 2015.

Although the return is incredible, returns happen frequently in football. About 10 things had to go perfect for Michigan State to win that game and every single one of them did.

One of the announcers, Verne Lundquist (sp?.. now retired) says its the greatest college football game ever played.

1

If I’m not mistaken, this game is now referred to as Kick Six.

1

u/fragrantsock 25d ago

Vanderbilt has entered the conversation!!! They won with ZERO seconds left on a recovered fumble. They did not lead for the entire game and won.

1

Auburns gonna win the football game! They’re gonna win the football game! And, what’s that? Oh my gawd they’re gonna win the 2028 presidential election! The whole team just became the president! Oh my gawd they’ve now won the space race with Russia! They landed on the moon! Auburns gonna win the space race! Holy cow! Auburns gonna win the pinewood derby!!! AAAAHHHH

Haha! Same! That was so awesome to see, I remember we were just getting back from Christmas shopping and I was able to run in and turn it on right as the kick was being made.

I remember where I was when I saw this. One of the most exciting sports moments I’ve ever seen live. I’m an Arkansas fan, and I remember other Arkansas fans were upset at this play because this meant that an SEC team, in this case Alabama, would not be represented in the playoff. Verne Lunquist’s playcall on this was way more exciting and magical IMO. Gives me goosebumps seeing the Auburn fans reaction and hearing them erupt

3

u/Poverty_Shoes 28d ago

Auburn did end up making the BCS championship game after Ohio State lost the Big 10 title game too.

1

u/ArsenalinAlabama3428 27d ago

Your memory is a little wack. This was the BCS era, so idk why yall were sad about Alabama lol. Also Verne’s call is booty cheeks compared to Rod’s. You can hear Stan White losing his mind so much they had to cut his mic lol.

The Alabama kicker has an interesting life story.

He grew up in an orphanage in Poland due to family hardships. At age 13, he was adopted by Tom and Michelle Griffith, two math teachers from Calhoun, Georgia. He moved to the United States, learned English fluently within a year, and eventually discovered his natural talent for kicking footballs.

Full story here and there’s an ESPN segment about this story as well.

https://www.rainbowkids.com/adoption-stories/from-polish-orphan-to-alabama-s-kicker-adam-griffith-s-wild-ride-1188#:\~:text=Learned%20English%20fluently,grade%20middle%20school%20PE%3B

u/martin_seamus_mcfIy 28d ago

Honestly, I think Kanye is doing the heavy lifting in this clip. Runaway SLAPS. #rip early Kanye.

1

u/Bison_2008 28d ago

What is the name of the track??

1

u/WeaponizedIndecision 28d ago

Alabama was unprepared for that play and failed to put their best athletes on the field for that attempt.

2

u/Dungeon_Skeever 28d ago

Ehhh it’s football, they lost. Maybe ego?

1

u/WeaponizedIndecision 28d ago

Well, those lineman sure did struggle attempting to tackle…but I hear ya…football.

2

u/Dungeon_Skeever 28d ago

They sure did.

2

u/Dungeon_Skeever 28d ago

I mean it’s only natural. Even on special teams you can never think of this play working out the way it did. 100% they went there. They were operating less than what was expected based off circumstance and that is why sports in general are amazing. It all comes down to drive.

Is that considered a “Run off” 👀

1

u/SilverShape 28d ago

I had been watching Devin Hester compilations around the time this happened. Alabama lined up and I immediately told my Dad and brother “Well, that’s one way to lose a game. Auburn is about to run this back.”

1

u/Pollia 28d ago

I need a shot that shows what on earth the kicking team is doing.

Only 3 dudes make it close enough to even attempt to get a stop when the ball had to travel 50 yards, then the runner had go 45 yards just to reach them.

1

u/jtshinn 28d ago

They aren’t a unit that plays kick coverage ever so they just were not prepared for it. Someone should have said something and maybe they did, but it’s the worst assembly of players to be in that situation.

1

u/No_Poet_7244 28d ago

Alabama put extra linemen on the field for that play to give the kicker maximum protection; the most realistic threat would have been a blocked FG taken back for a touchdown. Griffith (the kicker) had shown he was capable of reaching that distance, it was his accuracy that was in question, so no one on the Alabama side thought his kick would come up short.

1

u/WTL3405 28d ago

I don’t like either team but I still remember where i was when I saw this live

1

u/jasper_grunion 28d ago

My son and I were watching this game live on TV. Neither of us are SEC fans and he was just learning the game. We still recount it as one of the greatest moments in sports history and part of our shared history. Auburn’s gonna win the football game! We’ll never forget it.

1

u/ODGWeenie 28d ago

That first, “OHBYGAWD!!!” by the second announcer is epic. “There goes Davis!” is an all time classic call. What. A. Finish.

1

u/TigerWoodsChauffeur 28d ago

This is one of those situations where I remember where I was and what I was doing. I’m not a fan of either team, that’s how big this was

1

u/big_daddy68 28d ago

I was puzzled that Bama’s FG team wasn’t coached better on this play. Only a couple of guys were even in position to make a play.

1

u/luchajefe 25d ago

They put all the big blocking linemen in to protect the kicker, those aren't the guys built to chase a lightning fast return man.

Another thing in Auburn's favor was that the kick took Davis to Auburn's sideline, even farther away from where the big lineman would expect to be.

1

u/jfq722 28d ago

So by that same game play logic - if a punter happens to put the ball through the uprights, is that 3 points?

1

u/luchajefe 25d ago

It is not, a punt is considered out of play once it crosses the goal line. A field goal must be done with a holder from a specific formation.

I was on a plane, about to take off, the pilot announced it over the intercom and my father and I, he is a die hard Alabama fan, thought he was joking.

I would have stopped him

You could see some Bama players were ready for overtime, auburn wasn't having that.

Also just shows what great announcers do to a moment

I was in the student section and ended up hugging Bo Jackson on the field after the game lol. A day I’ll never forget.

I got matches with these songs:

• Runaway by Kanye West (00:25; matched: 88%)

Released on 2010-10-04.

• Runaway by Charts Hits Megastars (00:59; matched: 83%)

Album: Runaway (Radio Version). Released on 2024-11-05.

I am a bot and this action was performed automatically | If the matched percent is less than 100, it could be a false positive result. I'm still posting it, because sometimes I get it right even if I'm not sure, so it could be helpful. But please don't be mad at me if I'm wrong! I'm trying my best! | GitHub new issue | Donate

That had to feel amazing, … but at some point, I would be like, “Well, that was it. Highlight of my career. I suppose it’s all downhill from here …”

How do you ever top that?

When you are done arguing with a ‘bama fan about anything… just slip in one final 3word jab…

There goes Davis

How good were those blocks, though? My football knowledge is weak, but to my eye, he could've been taken out twice if not for his teammates' work. I love that nobody on the field gave up from either side. The stadium must've gone apeshit.

Kick Six Iron Bowl; 2013 Season

Crazy game. The week before was Prayer at Jordan Hare which was also wild af. I was there for both.

You can find the whole season on YouTube and it’s such a typical Auburn heartfelt/heartbreaking experience.

The 2010 Season with Cam Newton is also legendary.

If I remember correctly, Davis was instrumental in the prior play getting the time to stop at 1 second too

Something in me feels like one of the guys could’ve took him down but didn’t, I’m in the UK so no clue about US football. Why didn’t he throw himself at him ?
