Work in Progress 1/4 Butterflies!
I’m back trying some new textures and for hard I’ve gone for obsidian. Please give me ideas for the others: cracked, glowing & liquid.

Here is a compilation of all the steps I did to color these gems and the outcome.
1 - flat color.
2 - make a geometric pattern that seems feasible for the facets of the gem. Basically, try to imagine how it would be cut and draw it out.
3 - add different colors to the facets that tie in with the color of the gem. Place the darkest colors in the places where shadows will be.
4 - add shadows by overlaying black over the darkest colors. Vary how thick the overlay is to give depth and dimension.
5 - add white ink or paint where highlights should be. Blot some of the highlights a little to create variety in highlights based on your light source. Partially outline most or all facets depending on how transparent the gem is meant to be.
Which gemstone is your favorite?

I went back and forth on whether or not to add white highlights with gel pen. Should I go back in?

Thank you to everyone who helped me on my last post and told me about chasing the ink with my Ohuhu markers! These are my favorite works that I've done recently after getting some practice in. Definitely not perfect yet but getting better every day!

This took me several weeks to complete just because of life and responsibilities but I love how this turned out. I am hanging this in my cube at work tomorrow. If anyone is curious, I used Ohuhu alcohol markers for this.

I took a few years off to finish some really big diamond art peices and this is the first page I finished when getting back into coloring while sick with the flu. I'm going to lay down now.

I mainly use colored pencils but recently bought some card stock coloring books to finally get some use out of my beloved copic alcohol markers! Practicing on this page and getting some mindless coloring in before graduating to my Bobbie Goods pages. I’m obsessed with how the little koi fish turned out 😊

Here are the next 3 phases at once because I really want to finish this page. And I'm always getting busy with stuff these days and don't want to never get to it! For the next three steps, they go as follows: (swipe ->)
3 = colors, a gemstone is a prism. And they reflect extra colors. If they're a colored gem, the colors tend to be different shades of the gems color and some neighboring shades in the rainbow.pick three to five colors. The darker the gem, the fewer will be needed but still good. And you can still go more than less. The darkest shades should go where the shadows will be darkest and the lightest in the brightest places.
4 = shadows, take black, and place the shadows. The black should be thickest on the dark shades of color and lighten very slightly up to the brightest colors, which should have no black. The darkest black should be the facet furthest from your light source. Also, a little shadowing with any overlapping objects and in the center where facets all overlap to show its 3D. Usually in the edge closest to your light source.
5 = white for highlights. Paint, gel pen, posca markers, it all works as long as it's something you can blot before it dries. Working on each facet individually, add white and blot the medium with your finger, cuetip, or tissue. The further from your light source, the more you blot and the less medium you leave over top the color. This creates a bit of transparency through which the color comes through. For a dark/cloudy gem, you only need to worry about surface facets. The facets on the very top of the gem. For lighter ones like the amethyst (light purple stone) you can do this with all the facets seen through the gem. Layer unblotted white in the brightest places and outline most of the surface facets. Use a toothpick to make lines between the facets clean and crisp while doing this. You'll want to scrape the lines clean while it's fresh, so right after blotting.
Then you'll have a sparkling gem. For those that got this far, bonus progress shot at the end.

I've seen several types of coloring books that are themed around practicing patterns (Coco Wyo, Vivi Tinta, Southern Lotus, etc), and they look fun, but they all seem geared towards markers. I know I could use colored pencils anyways but the technique is probably a little different, and I was wondering if there were any books geared more towards colored pencils in this style. I also know there are colored pencil books for hyper realism but that's not what I'm looking for. I might try the Helen Elliston one down the road, but I'm specifically looking for one in the cute bold style of Coco Wyo, Jade Summers, Bobbi Goods, etc.
I'll still buy one even if it's for markers but wanted to see if anyone on reddit has any they found for pencils or if they had no problems applying the similar techniques with a color pencils.

I can tell I’m out of practice and the paper was thinner than I’d have liked, but thrilled to finish a page after such a long hiatus. 7/10 for me

This is my first Coco Wyo digital color using procreate. I love being able to take my favorite hobby on the go!

I'm not sure if this is a common sense question, or a unique phenomenon I'm experiencing ..
I just picked up my first coloring book and set of alcohol markers this past week. It was so relaxing the first time I used them (during the daytime), just watching the white space get filled by color.
I'm now trying to do some coloring at night before bed to relax, but I'm finding my zen is disrupted by my own shadows casting onto the page! Does anybody know what I'm talking about? I can't figure out a lighting situation for my table that won't cast shadows. I'd also love to sit and decompress in more ambient lighting for the night ..
What does everybody's space / lighting situation look like for some relaxing evening coloring?

Coloring book is Kaleidoscope Coloring Magnificent Creatures. Used Grabie glitter gel pens.
I had this coloring book for a loooong time. I think my grandmother got it for me. This was back when the adult coloring books = lots of little complicated details. I've done coloring pages before, but this is my first with all the little complicated patterns :)
