Welcome to the Age of Sigmar: Spearhead sub! We have a lot of awesome people around here that are very willing to help new people get into this well-designed game mode, as well as some very cool custom content for your games. To help you on your way, we made this mega thread to give some guidance on how to maneuver everything this game has to offer.
Fortunately, Spearhead is relatively easy to get into.
You'll need a gaming pack of your choice (more on that later), a Spearhead of your choice per player, some dice and a ruler.
- Gaming packs
At the time of writing, there are 2 official gaming packs available to choose from, with a 3rd version on its way.
- Spearhead army
"Which one should I choose to buy?" is a very good question we see going around a lot on this sub. There definitely isn't an objective answer to this question and all boils down to personal preference.
Generally, people will advice you to buy whatever you prefer based on what you want from this game, but you can always have a look at the rankings if you want to base your choice on power level: AoS Rankings
Otherwise, consider these priorities:
- Darn it, the army I wanted to buy isn't available anymore. What now?
No worries my friend! You can still play every Spearhead that is available in the range. The Spearhead (and previously named Vanguard) boxes do go out of print, so you might have to buy the models separately. The rules will always be available from either the official AoS app, the downloads page of Warhammer Community or, my personal favourite, the community made one page sheets found further on in this thread.
- Dice
Just get a boat load of D6's and you're good!
- Ruler
Whatever fancies your preference. The ruler that comes with Fire & Jade is actually quite handy, but you could also use a regular tape measure or a fancy custom made one from Etsy. As long as it measures inches, you're good.
Start playing dude! Get your gaming buddy, 2 Spearheads of your choice, a gaming pack of your choice, some dice, a ruler and your good to go.
You'll probably need to read up on the core rules. Just remember that in Spearhead we don't use the Advanced rules of the game (like Magic, Command points etc.) and just rely on the Core Rules. But if you prefer watching a how-to-play video, we also got you covered
There's also a handy reference sheet that you can print out for easy reference during games.
Do we have some fun content for you!
- One-page cheatsheets that you can print out to have all your Spearhead's rules on a handy sheet. No need to buy expensive cards or print and cut out individual warscrolls, we got you covered with these.
- Strategy guide to read up on what other experienced players are saying about each specific Spearhead. They provide tips and tricks about how to play and general opinions on each single one.
- There are a couple of official rule modules that GW put out, definitely try these for change of pace:
- We also have some awesome community made Spearheads that are definitely worth the effort of checking out:
- These community made apps are very handy for tracking games:
- On Youtube you can find some channels that provide very well made battle reports:
- Last but not least, join the Discord for more strategy talk, picture sharing and finding people to play with.
I hope this thread has made jumping into the game mode a bit easier for you. If you still have questions or things you want to add to this thread, be sure to let us know in the comment section.
Other than that, happy gaming!

Looking to pick up another spearhead as I'm fixed in the game and the models! So far my one and only opponent is my partner, she plays starscale and honestly it can make for tough games! A mistake on my part and the kroxies/ carno eat half my army! Which is still a laugh with the rats. So far I have: -warpspark clawpack -bloodwind legion -crixxit killpack
Ive got part of the ogor warglutt SH just because I like the models but I can't imagine that match up at all.
Any reccomendations would be great!

Hi all, new to spearhead (only played one game!) but I am just reading the rules for the new Fyreslayer spearhead. For their charge and strike first rule itās says āEffect: you can re-roll the charge roll. If you do, until the start of your next turn, the unit using that CHARGE ability has STRIKE-FIRST if it charged in the same turn.ā
Does this mean you HAVE to re-roll to access the strike-first? Or the use of the ability gives you the option to re-roll but you get strike-first whether you re-roll or not?
Thanks. Sorry if a silly question, just seems odd it would need to be a re-roll to access the best bit of the rule

What did you do with the skink that is left over from the big Dino in the seraphon spearhead. I use mine as token.

One-page sheet forĀ Khazalite Holds - Drakkbluds Clanguard
You can print it on A4, it fits nicely and is easy to read.
Updates
IMPORTANT:Ā Since itās not possible to update the images in the post, Iāll upload small/blurred previews of the cheatsheet here. My first versions often contain typos, outdated abilities, incorrect copy-pastes, or other issues. If you find any, let me know! I will fix it ASAP.
This way, I hope to prevent people from using an outdated version they might find elsewhere when a newer one is available.
Thread with every One-Page Spearhead made so far
Enjoy!

The whole painting process took around 10 days. Painting all those stones, wooden beams, and rooftops was quite a challenge, but seeing everything come together made it worth it.

Howdy! I posted earlier that I had 72 hours to paint my Ironjawz but now my buddy wants to push it a week to the right because itās a busy week for work for both of us.
The good thing is⦠I get to take my time and really enjoy the process.
Holy crap!! Iāve never actually had so much fun painting anything before Orks!! And Iāve just come up with a skin theme that works for me. Although Iāll be working on diversifying my skin tones because I believe not all orks are alike. Anyway.. thank you all for the words of encouragement, yall are some cool as people! š¤

I recently got my first spearhead and I was wondering what do I all need to get to start playing with friends? I've heard you need to get sand & bone or the other one to play but when I went to one of my lgs around me they said that I don't need those and everything is on the aos app.

So, one of the available enhancements for my Ogor's general is being able to move trough terrain as if he had Fly.
However, it seems like every terrain piece in spearhead is unstable so anyone can move through it anyway, no?
What am I missing?

Had this sitting for couple of months. Just started playing spearhead and really enjoyed it, so I thought I would finally paint this amazing terrain. Hope you like it!

Hey, guys!
Soon our local spearhead tournament with at least 7 games will start. I chose Yndrastaās spearhead.
I will face Crixxit kill-pack, FEC Charnel Watch, Seraphon Starscale Warhost, Helsmiths of Hashut and new Sons of Behemat.
Any advices vs these? Except for having fun^^
