Nobody actually thinks it’s a slur, but that’s a more palatable rationalization for restricting its use than “We don’t want that topic discussed here because reasons.” Maybe we’ve got some island getaway enjoyers or their sympathizers in the mod group?

It is deviant, antisocial, harmful, and a criminal activity. Not a disability or disease. A choice to cause and/or perpetuate harm. There is no participation in pedophilic behavior that is neutral.
Yes and no. There's a type of disorder referred to as a paraphilia, typically a form of OCD. This is a psychological disorder. They are diagnosable, and are usually based in trauma– i.e. a child who was sexually abused may have complex, confusing, and extremely distressing intrusive thoughts about abusing other children the same way they were abused, even into adulthood. Typically, people with paraphilic disorders seek help, never act on these intrusive thoughts, and heal without ever harming anyone.
The way pedophile is used colloquially, though, does not refer to paraphilic disorders. Child sex abusers are more often than not not paraphilic pedophiles. Most often, they're not even actually attracted to their victims. They do it because they have the power to, not because of some sick attraction.
This isn't to say that no offending child sex abuser in the world has ever had a paraphilic disorder, just that it is a disorder and that not every person who experiences a paraphilic disorder is an abuser or a danger. I am not defending pedophilia. The idea of harming children in any way disturbs me to my core. I am simply a former sexually abused child who has studied these things for the entirety of my adult life.
You are correct that molesting children isn't a disorder, because it is not. But paraphilic pedophilia is an illness, and most people who experience it are disturbed and disgusted by these thoughts and have no intention to every harm a child, as they were abused in that same way themselves. Oftentimes, they kill themselves or isolate themselves from society as a whole until they receive the adequate help that they need to cease having those thoughts at all. Human psychology is extremely nuanced.

Consuming underage porn, stalking children, touching/harming children = unacceptable/harmful, therefore what I (and most others) refer to as pedophilia. That stuff is not a disorder; it’s a crime.
I do think psychological terms, diagnoses, and deviant behavior often get conflated. Psychopathy, for instance, is something laypeople believe is a disorder, but is actually a descriptive term for a set of traits. The nearest actual diagnosis is Antisocial Personality Disorder.
And I absolutely agree with you on this. I just wanted to clarify since it's something I know about, and it's nice to be able to educate others about something I am passionate about, as I often learn new things from reading these types of exhanges in online spaces.
And you're correct about terms often being conflated. Sociopathy and psychopathy, or at the very least terms that are extremely similar, used to be used within the DSM, which I think is likely part of why those terms tend to be conflated with diagnostics. That being said, you're correct that they're just meant to describe a type of behavior.

When I worked at a psych hospital, we had this guy come in on a court commit. He attempted suicide and his pregnant wife had him involuntarily sent to us. He had been sexually abused as a child, and he had been having nightmares of abusing his future child, that was too early in to even tell the sex of. He tried to kill himself because he was afraid to tell his wife, and was afraid to ask for help from a mental health professional. He didn’t want to act on his intrusive thoughts, but he was afraid he would; terrified that he would.
His wife left him, had him served divorce papers while still inpatient, and told their church about his “sickness”. No idea what ever happened to him.
Yes, that mod very clearly explained their intentional reasoning and how clearly they understood the term slur and how it applied to that word specifically. There was no accident here and there is no justification for identifying it in that manner.

Ironically the mods are actually spreading libel in this case.
Remember, Ghislaine was a Reddit mod across the most prominent, all-facing subs here. She helped shape some of these sub cultures, like turning the word p*do into a slur and punishing its use.

Yep. Got my post removed in several local communities warning about a pedophile who hit on my 12 year old niece last year at a haunted house. He’s still employed this year. The mods told me it’s “hearsay” and “what’s to stop someone who doesn’t like you, calling you a pedophile too?”

It's not a slur and when you police language in that way, you enable abuse because you are removing the very words used to refer to the abuse.
Unless the post had details about someone grooming a child or abusing them, the rational they provided doesn't even make sense. If you're saying someone was accused of being a pedo and said nothing further then deleting the post was done more no more reason than they didn't like an icky word.
Quite frankly, they're doing the opposite of helping victims. If you want to avoid a topic entirely because any discussion of it is difficult, having one or two words people will use when discussing it that you can check for an avoid is a lot easier. Having to make up new terms makes it harder for individuals to filter and therefore avoid, not to mention the mindfuck that is reading something, puzzling over what somebody means, then it registering and now you're triggered even more because now you've put in the extra effort.

Honestly, I’ve been banned for defending an OP who was SA from comments telling her she was overreacting. All I said was anyone defending SA has probably committed SA and got myself a 3 day ban for harassment. It honestly feels like the more sketchy it is, the more they allow it and don’t allow anyone to talk against it. Pretty icky.
I got chastised in the Deadbedroom sub for saying someone's husband was acting like a "man child". Basically told me I was name calling. I just left the sub. Some moderators let their own bias come into these decisions.

It doesn't matter if the mod made a mistake or if they actually believe pedo is a slur. Their actions still damaged the reputation of that subreddit and has made all the other mods sus for being associated with this mod.
They should have apologized, removed the mod, and unbanned anyone who got banned because of everything.
