Serious A reply to another user's post, with regards to railroads and freeways: using European technology for transportation is actually very American, as the Interstates themselves have German origins!
Back in 1919, a young Dwight D. Eisenhower was assigned to the Cross-Country Motor Transport Train (picture above), an 80-vehicle US Army convoy meant to demonstrate to the military and public the US Army's then-new trucks, tanks, and other vehicles. However, due to the US highways being unpaved roads that were rough on the motor vehicles, with bridges that can barely sustain them, it took 62 days for the convoy to make it from New York City to San Francisco (today, it takes five!).
A generation later, when Eisenhower fought in World War II, the US Army used Germany's autobahn system of freeways to transport US troops into Germany during the final phases of the war. As Eisenhower said:
The old convoy had started me thinking about good, two-lane highways, but Germany had made me see the wisdom of broader ribbons across the land.
And so, Eisenhower spearheaded the beginning of the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s, based on his experiences on captured German freeways.
As much as this sub love to hate Europe (and by extension, oppose building public transit in the US because it's the "European" way), the interstates are themselves a European idea, one that's so good that we adopted it for our own.
If we can build European-style freeways, why not European-style public transit?
Apologies if I took a certain recent post too seriously, but as a public transit enthusiast who also believes that American freeways could use some relief (have you driven through an LA traffic jam? My dad sure has!), I felt like writing this!
