Regarding that discussion about Chosen One vs regular dude and whatnot, can't pass up the chance to bring up the best to ever do it, Himmel the Hero. Failed to draw the legendary sword of the hero, but he and his party beat the Demon King anyways with him wielding his basic replica.

u/guntanksinspace OH MY GOD IT'S JUST A PICTURE OF A DOG 1d ago
The racing game segment just makes me go "aw man, Screamer could have gotten more love too" lol. The guys really have their flavor of "racing game" they want and that's no fault, but it's not like there hasn't been neat stuff out there (thinking of Parking Garage Rally, Old School Rally, the recent fixes to the old PC versions of Outrun 2 AND Sega Rally 2 (not really that recent but still), TXR (that was last year), and so on.
That said, Galactic Racer does look pretty fucking rad.

With that discussion about being the chosen hero or not in fiction, I wonder what Woolie and Pat would think about how Morrowind handles it, where it keeps it deliberately vague if you really are the Nerevarine reincarnated or are just some guy who happens to make themselves fit into the prophecy. It also tracks with how Mantling as a concept works in The Elder Scrolls lore, since if you manage to embody a role or legend enough while you’re a normal mortal, you eventually just *become* that because reality ceases to note the differences. You can basically Crazy Talk the universe in The Elder Scrolls in order to become the chosen one or a god.
27
u/Mizzie-Mox 1d ago edited 1d ago
Somewhat related: I like it when "the prophecy" or "the fates" are just large-scale manipulations made by mundane people or figures. Neo in the Matrix is a good example, along with Aloy in the Horizon series.
26
u/The_Draigg Member of the Brave 13000 1d ago
The prophecy of the Chosen Undead from Dark Souls is a fun one of those, since it’s really just one big trick to try and make an Undead powerful enough to Link the First Flame.
12
u/Kataphrut94 1d ago
Reminds me of that old webcomic about the plot of Dark Souls 1 being a YouTube prank video. "Local Undead Idiot Sets Himself on Fire."
25
u/iadnm 1d ago
There's only one individual in lore who is canonically connected to Mantling and it's Sheogorath.
Also you probably are the Nerevarine since you can wear Neravar's ring that kills anyone who isn't Nerevar.
2
u/The_Draigg Member of the Brave 13000 1d ago
Well yeah for the Nerevarine, but given how you’re given the dialogue choices to deny it when asked, it does still leave some room for some ambiguity there if you want it.
25
u/iadnm 1d ago
I wouldn't say so, because Elder Scrolls allows characters to be wrong.
I mean this is the game with Vivec after all, who is definitively proven in the game to be a liar.
I do personally think it's less ambiguous considering you have Dagoth Ur openly calling you Nerevar and he has been in that mountain since before the prophesy. But he is also insane to be fair.
3
u/Armada6136 18h ago
Dagoth is arguably the most insane character in the series, and that's counting Sheogorath. Sheo has no illusions about his place in the greater cosmos, Dagoth is so mad that he started actively imposing that madness on reality.
Wearing Moon and Star isn't a confirmation of reincarnation either, since it gets its power from Azura and you are given it by Azura, who has a vested interest in making sure her prophecy plays out the way she wants. Princes are tricky like that, and Azura is one of the most tricky in that regard.

u/RocketbeltTardigrade "What's that emotion? Tired scream. Yawning." 1d ago
There's a moment in Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell when a guy with a coincidentally similar name and description gets mistaken for an ancient wizard king to whom the land of Britain owes fealty.
So a guy tries to bother that normal guy, and the rivers and rocks of Britain fucking jump his ass. Until they notice it was a different guy and awkwardly shuffle back home.

Oh I didn't know there was a term for it. That's like the whole Hero of Kvatch from Oblivion becoming Shegorath by the time of Skyrim right?
3
u/The_Draigg Member of the Brave 13000 22h ago
Yep, that's the exact most direct example we have of Mantling in The Elder Scrolls.
2
u/iadnm 15h ago
It's also the only example we have. And it canonically happened multiple times with Haskil being a vestige of someone else who mantled Sheogorath in ages long past.
1
u/thesyndrome43 14h ago
Is Tiber Septim becoming Talos done in a different way? I'm not huge into ES lore, mostly it's just bits I've picked up from books in-game
3
u/iadnm 13h ago
It's not explained at all how he achieved apotheosis. Every claim otherwise is either not canon or from very dubious sources. Like the claim that he shaped Cyrodiil through CHIM comes from Mankar Cameron, who is a cult leader that believes Nirn is a realm of Oblivion and that Lorkhan was a Daedric Prince, which is very wrong.
Tiber Septim became Talos because that's his Nordic name. It's not a different being, it's just what he was called. How he became a god is unknown, he just did.

We don't even know if the guy who founded the Third Empire was an Imperial. Could be a Nord, could be a Breton, who knows?
2
u/rakadishu 13h ago
Not sure how it ties into Morrowind exactly, but I'd like to see a story handle the distinction between "The Chosen One" and "The One We Chose"
like, you're not Destined or Ordained or whatever, you're just the one who's gotta do it. Sorry!

Those skullgirls devs have some real weird "gooners remorse" or something for a while now. They made a NSFW bishoujou fighting game, but now 10 years later are really embarrassed about it XD.
33
u/WanonTime [She/Her] WHENS MAHVEL 1d ago
none of the original devs are around at this point i think lmao
5
u/ShaneDark 9h ago
Yup, most of who run it are a skeleton team trying to keep the mobile game alive. Its not gooners remorse, its people who took the gooners project and trying to make it as clean as they can mobile app store sell it.
The art contest drama is so shit because the rules were so vague that you couldn't even be accepted if you ever done NSFW on your account. But the two artists got hit with just having one and it not being connected to main, and a slightly suggestive implication one, its a damn mess.
26
17
u/Loopy-Loophole 23h ago
They’ve been embarrassed since way back when they removed a bunch of panty and ass shots from the game and art book.
18
u/Auctoritate 21h ago
They removed original versions of artwork from the artbook?? Isn't that one of the POINTS of an artbook?!?
7
u/Loopy-Loophole 20h ago
Missed that? It was a part of the controversy at the time, iirc, They also did stuff like altering parasol’s dudes to be less nazi-ish, and changed bigbands story art to ‘not reference real world racial violence’ or something like that, it’s been ages and I don’t remember everything. But yea. They’re embarrassed to have gotten the horny game. Also I think there was a whole thing about the MikeZ stuff turning out to have been a straight up planned coup, but I’d recommend looking at it yourself cause I barely remember and was hard washing my hands of the shitshow at that point.
5
u/Bladerider17 16h ago
A paid art book as well, I believe they made it free on steam later on but still.
17
u/PissBoy_OFFICIAL This one's for you, Morph 19h ago
Worth clarifying that most (if not all) of the pantyshot frames they removed were from Filia, who according to her character bio is underage. Cerebella and Valentine have tons of pantyshots, and as far as I know they weren't edited at all.
I don't know why they went to all that trouble instead of just retconing Filia's age to 18, though. Seems like it would have been way easier and faster than having to alter all those animation frames
9
u/Bladerider17 16h ago
I don't know why they didn't retcon her age, it's the simplest thing to do.
Also I recall other characters getting altered with pantyshots, Cerebella and I think Parasol were affected but I'm not too sure.
2
u/ShaneDark 9h ago
Can't be gooners remorse when its current owners stole it from the original team and want to make money on the app store.

It was posted and then removed because it didn't have the article summary in the body I believe.

u/94dima94 One Piece is good, y'all 13h ago
Discworld has my favorite example of a Chosen One with Carrot.
He's a City Watch recruit who was sent to the city after being raised by dwarves.
He was found in the woods as the sole survivor of a bandit attack; he has a birthmark in the shape of a crown, and was found with a special sword.
In the city, we quickly find out that, despite being a bit simple (not stupid, just simple), he is extremely charismatic. People just naturally like him and are always listening to him, following his orders and respecting him.
It is extremely obvious to us that he is the last descendant of the royal family, and destined to be the True King.
He uses this "power" to... be a very good member of the City Watch. He has no interest in any of this "king" stuff, even hiding away any evidence of his royal blood. He is perfectly content just being a good guard, keeping the peace. And, only occasionally, he may drop some hints with the right people that he could do something about it, but there is no need for it, as long as nobody gets any wrong idea about seizing too much power for themselves.
7
u/An_Armed_Bear TOP 5, HUH? 9h ago
Like the only guy who was able to get away with (very vaguely) threatening Vetinari.
'Perhaps the city does need a king, though. Have you considered that?'
'Like a fish needs a... Er... A thing that doesn't work underwater, sir.'
'Yet a king can appeal to the emotions of his subjects, captain. In... Very much the same way as you did recently, I understand.'
'Yes, sir. But what will he do next day? You can't treat people like puppet dolls. No, sir. Mr Vimes always said a man has got to know his limitations. If there was a king, then the best thing he could do would be to get on with a decent day's work—'
'Indeed.'
'But if there was some pressing need... Then perhaps he'd think again.' Carrot brightened up. 'It's a bit like being a guard, really. When you need us, you really need us. And when you don't... Well, best if we just walk around the streets and shout All's Well. Providing all is well, of course.'

0:00 THEME OF SLAYER; KOREAN
0:38 Welcome to the castle super POD RACING cast~! Star wars pod racing back in the day was a really fun racing game back in the day. The new version has that go so fast you run into a wall and explode level of races too.
1:58 the characters in the new pod racing game. The pantheon of assholes. Biddy Blas~! Embracing the glup shittos of the world.
3:14 did you know it’s a roguelike?? And when’s the last ‘real’ racing game (according to pat) that came out? An arcade racer.
6:45 its interesting hearing more about the nonsense aliens over the racing. The kind of thing zero company is missing, these freako glupp shittos.
- 10:07 pod racer is your cartoons in the morning, while zero company is the 4pm shows after school. Pat is old too, as this hasn’t been a tink in years.
WEEK OF THE BEAST LORDS
WOOLIE
11:25 wrapping up Zero Company. Everyone talking about this being the final mission. Woolie is perfectly fine with a pop-up saying ‘this is the final mission.’ pat is partial to one person going ‘wrap up your shit, please, we’re not coming back.’
13:19 remember sekiro’s ending requirements? MORE RICE! Expedition 33’s auto saves.
- 16:06 a potential future of a playbar to roll back your play instead of a single saved state. Pat on fortune’s weave and social links being one of the things that still carry over when you reverse time.

- 20:39 can you game fortune’s weave to game the social links? Yeah, but there’s not much point of it. And ‘do it over’ buttons like in metaphor.
- 22:40 pat can’t stand the timer only takes into account your successful runs. Wanting current run and total hours of play. How long is elden ring, really? How about MGS4?
- 26:48 silk song and hollow knight in terms of length
28:50 being reminded of bits of star wars lore. Remember those evil sith nuns?
- 30:26 a single piece of star wars lore that was really annoying: Anakin had never met General Grievous before a certain point. The amount of time you can spend in just the clone wars. Dawntrail’s door.
- 34:20 a character dying vs. who’s that guy? Retroactive continuity with a character like Bobba fett.

- - 39:29 a lot of taste coming from modern sensibilities.
- - 40:49 woolie is not a fan of the chosen one trope. Pat on the old god of war games. Spawn.
- - 42:45 what do you want the moral of the story to be? Kingdom hearts and what a ‘chosen one’ means.
- - 44:57 Naruto’s story
- - 46:11 spoilers for disco elysium here and the main character’s place in the world. Is there anyone close to being how divorced he is?
- - 47:42 woolie wanting things outside the norm and to have his expectations subverted
50:12 over in onimusha, ornstein and smough dethroned as the best 2 vs 1 bossfight of all time. Ifuu and Burai are so good. It is not even close how great they are.double break into double issen.
52:22 both enemies feeling like they’re in the same space as you. They can interfere with one another.
53:52 having your rivals be as into the fight as you are are important. The respect on the behalf of the enemy.
55:25 enemies actively trying to get off screen to surround you.
56:37 getting to 1 vs 1 or getting both down at the same time. There’s a lot of variation.
57:43 Pat on the final boss fight and how punishing it is.
59:03 the upgraded grunts. The ninja grunts are great, why are there only like 12 of them?
1:01:12 pat: bloody palace where??? And remember that weird online mode from DMCV?
1:03:20 they did not get woolie. The dreadlocked man from the future saved him.anyway onimusha is incredible
1:04:37 over on woolieversus, going back to iron keep in DS2. Don’t give up skeleton. And on thursday, woolie is hopping on deadlock with gary and deathy. And Arjun dropped, so he’ll be checking him out end of the week. And checking the street fighter movie!
1:08:39 look at ALL the marketing for street fighter!
1:10:06 playing new characters in deadlock
PAT
1:10:53 Words to start with: everyone is fine. Elmo acting a bit strange. And then he started bleeding. Did you know it’s a federal holiday? Going to the emergency vet.
1:14:50 the fun conversation of “what do we tell the child if elmo doesn’t make it?” and it turns out he just has a UTI.
1:16:14 look at all these medications this cat is taking.
1:17:32 that conversation is pushed off another day! But they do plan on telling him that living things do go away forever.
1:19:32 Trying 2 new types of food this week. Going to a dennys. It’s no white spot.
1:22:01 he also went to a traditional Ethiopian place. Pat didn’t like it, sadly.
1:24:27 it passed the first test, pat and paige were the only white people there. Trying a lot of it to see if it was just one thing or if its just that style of cooking in general.
1:26:01 certain types of cuisine that are for specific tastes. Like Afghani food. Paige liking really strong food. Malört liquor.
1:29:09 He checked out the undertale symphony. They played most of the songs, but pat was sad they didn’t play undine’s genocide route theme
1:30:32 seeing the demographic for undertale’s audience
1:32:13 hey, put your phones away if you’re at an orchestra.
1:34:13 teenagers there with their parents or grandparents
1:35:58 sitting next to someone that just flew in from singapore who just saw the singapore show
1:37:45 you can judge people for being weird at an undertale concert if they’re touching your arm. And sadly no cool merch
- 1:39:09 you think ludvig can introduce them to woodkids?
1:40:16 Getting through terras campaign in birth by sleep. The dumbest character ever. Getting tricked by every disney villain.
- 1:41:56 the designs have gotten more mature, but the writing has pretty much stayed the same. Aqua as the only one with braincells.
1:42:50 beating ace combat 8. Nothing else doesn’t come close, and it’s true. Actually tearing up. Hitting weight of the world from automata levels of tearing up.
1:44:35 Selling a million already. Now getting into the mainstream.
1:46:00 the sound of ace combat. The peak of sound design. It is also very loud.
1:48:45 incredible enough to ignore your wife.
1:49:45 the leitmotif of the enemy war chant.
1:50:45 never play on normal controls. You have to play with expert controls. Feeling how you play in your chest.
- 1:54:04 normal controls vs expert controls and what changes between them. Controlling like a car vs controlling like a plane.
2:00:07 this has more connection to 7 than pat thought. But you dont need to play 7 to play 8.
2:01:20 who pat wouldn’t recommend this to: someone that doesn’t understand why this isn’t set in the real world. The “I only read non-fiction” types
2:04:20 the best game pat played this year. The music being 90s arcade funk mixed with the height of final fantasy.
2:06:52 restarting fortunes weave and starting with Cai now. The real tutorial. Seeing Theodora's entrance in his route. A neat version of the plucky kid archetype.
2:08:44 woolie thinking about doing some one offs offline like zero company. Woolie has way too many games he wants to play possibly on stream.
2:11:54 pat’s advice: cut it off early instead of ending it miserably.
2:12:48 pat’s brain tuned for streaming content.
2:13:42 things are different now that they are married and have kids.

What are some recent bad examples of egregious and played straight chosen ones? Woolie references Naruto but even he had a shit childhood and I wouldn't consider that recent. I feel like a lot of pop culture media these days does an alright job at giving their main characters power or duty in a way that doesn't seem hamfisted and not all sunshine and rainbows. I guess a lot of isekai power fantasy shows sort of fit the description though.
8
u/wendigo72 GO READ CHOUJIN X!!! 11h ago
The thing is isekai has more of “bland guy rises up to become hero” more than a nobleman or chosen one too
It’s why I just don’t agree with them on the subject lol

u/ToastyMozart Bearish on At-Risk Children 8h ago
They split the difference in a weird way because Generic-kun will be literally chosen by the powers that be to un-fuck the fantasy world in question, but none of the locals know that and there's no prophecy beyond "here's a superpower, go get 'em kid!"
4
u/wendigo72 GO READ CHOUJIN X!!! 11h ago edited 10h ago
You can really get into the weeds with the chosen one/noble special hero discussion and I think I’m about to
As someone who has an active interest in reading mythology, it’s not so clear cut. Like a LOT of the most iconic heroes we know about have tragic endings. See every single Greek hero getting old and slaughtered to death by something. King Arthur being slain by his own son or Beowulf being killed by the dragon.
Even Sir Gawain and the Green Knight ends with green knight patting him on the head telling him he’s good for being scared of dying.
To get back to more modern fiction, I do think you need to make your Main character special in some way or you end up with all those bland isekai protagonists that were losers, died, and reincarnated into biggest giga chads ever

u/NoReaction4 1d ago
I remember when the KH3 trailer came out and Woolie's reaction to the Aqua reveal was "Was that a stinger? Are we supposed to know who that is?". That man really knows nothing.
8
u/deuxthulhu Fart Town USA (Japan) 23h ago
But was his reaction wrong, when outside people rightfuilly assumed the PSP spinoff game was a sidestory and not a crucial part of KH lore because it didnt feature Sora or Riku?
9
u/Loopy-Loophole 23h ago
Tbh people should have assumed the spin offs were important off of chain of memories being a fucking gameboy game and the bridge between one and two.
7
u/Arlen92 18h ago
The real problem is that there are no spin-offs in KH. They are sold as such, be even missing the one game could get you confused as shit, if care for story. It's one of the reasons they released the "less important games" (like 368/2) as a movie, so you don't lose the important story beats.
I love the series to shit, but find super annoying that KH 1 into 2 into 3 isn't a clean and cohesive story, with the other games complementing stuff around it.
3
u/TheLastMegaMan 20h ago
Until the collections came out, I never played Chain of Memories and had no idea it was so important. There are dozens of us who never played any of the spinoffs until then.
0
u/hyperfell 20h ago
Nowadays people should assume they are important, since their stories come packaged with the game.
2
u/davidm2d3 18h ago
even back in the days of the ps2 release, 2 opens with the montage of COM scenes as santuary plays. I knew of com but also had never played it, but the fact 2 had snippets of the events of the gba game in its opening cutscene clued me in that game was important to the plot.

u/fly2555 FE Lore Enthusiast 1d ago
Ok let me lay it out for Fortune’s Weave. Every time you complete a chapter, a save is created for the start of the next chapter in that route. Restarting the chapter goes back to how it was when you started the chapter in that route. When Chapter 12 of any Part 1 is finished, the map information, god's favor progress, and general side quest completion will transfer to any other Part 1 you start at Chapter 1. The only thing that stays the same are relationship levels between characters, these are minor bonuses and are mostly for story.
While you can restart any battle, the big issue comes in when you go through the chapter and spend weapon durability or use consumables in several battles and screw yourself when you need them at the end of chapter. Restarting the chapter is a last resort because you roll back hours of progress depending on what you're doing, you any upgrades, experiance, orgnization, route specific objectives, and other things are gone. Sometimes you forget you were suppose to do something and enter the chapter battle missing equipment.
I complete the game (Normal/Casual) in around 200 hours after doing:
P1 Cai, P1 Theo, P1 Dietrich, P1 Leda,
P1 Cai again (to recruit everyone), P2 Cai
P1 ch12 Dietrich again (to get the last 2 not in P1 Cai), P2 Dietrich
used the skip function for Theo's and Leda's P2
P3
All I will say about P2 is its a major step up from P1 in terms of dificulty and that P3 is best done when you've done at least one P1 Route or Paralogue for each of 8 lords.
As far as P1 goes, Cai is my favorite one so far. Granted this could be due to a bias of doing his route first, but his route pops off at ch 6, has several really good scene, and ends strong.

You stated that it's "fun for all the reasons that are not the actual racing." I took away from that that you had assumed from not seeing gameplay and instead seeing character interactions that the gameplay must be unremarkable or bad. If I was wrong to interpret it that way, then I apologize.

I mean, it’s Dan Rykert. He’s not a broken clock, he just doesn’t have a 7

Context plz. I haven't thought of Dan since, like, 2020, so reading your comment hit me like a truck.
Did he give Fire Emblem a 4/10 because it had a scene with characters eafing a condiment he's never tried before?

What was the Anime involving someone using the sword in the stone without pulling it out of the stone? That pat and woolies talked about?
It sounded neat

Regarding the discussion of play time counting, I do think menu time especially in RPGs should count. Putting your strategy and party together is part of the game, isn't it? I also think time spent reading documents and stuff should count but that's whatever. Time spent retrying should also count, otherwise every "time to beat" stat is actually "time to beat if you're perfect and never fail or stop ever".
That aside, would tracking both really be that hard? One tracker for "time spent not counting failed runs / time spent in menus if you want" and another for "time spent playing the game including failed runs and menu time" Hell, even accounting for variants of if you want to count reading time and menu time and party time and paused not even there time that can't be that much info to store, right? It's just a question of what the dev team themselves wants to count, I figure.

The AI discussion at the end kinda bothered me. Maybe I'm going insane, I wanna know what the people here think of it.
Seems like the way Pat and Woolie are thinking about AI is like a new crypto or a new metaverse: the new tech scheme with no real use-case. The one thing AI can do is cause psychocis on whoever uses it. This was more or less my own take as well.
Then recently there was news of AI doing advanced math and disproving the Jacobian conjecture. This was the first one that surprised me, but since then there's been 100s more. Now... I don't know enough about this kind of advanced math to even know judge whether these discoveries are impressive, but reading around and seeing takes from people I trust, this does seem like very a big deal.
Since then I've looked into it more. Seems like the model have improved a lot, they hallucinate way less, and they've gotten particularly good at coding. This last one is an area I can judge a bit better though I'm only an occasional programmer, I can tell it's better than me and seems like people with a lot more experience than me also recognise it as very impressive. Honestly, the spookiest thing isn't the capabilities themselves but rather the rate of improvement.
I will concede that this is a culture podcast and that I expect the effects of AI to be bad for the capital-C Culture in general -- its anti-art, it generates a lot of slop, it enables people to self-isolate much more, and there is some degree of actual psychocis. At the same time, I'm somewhat frustated about the refusal to engage with this seriously. This week there was a news item about Xbox LABS and decomps (as far as I understand it, decomping is a very hard programming task that's trial-and-error heavy and that new AI has recently made it economical to do, seems like it's actually a really big deal for gaming) to which Woolie simply groaned (I still have no idea what the story actually is), and Pat changed topics to a study that confirms their "this is a psychosis machine that makes you dumb" thesis (which feels a bit like rationalization why you don't need to take this topic seriously).

I’ll try to simplify the general feeling.
Are there some things AI can genuinely help with? Probably.
Even for those things; is the juice worth the squeeze? Very rarely.
As a whole product forced into everything and used to take good paying jobs from the working class? No.

I guess it isnt until it is.
I specifically remember dismissing a headline about LLMs in math research like 2 years ago. Now it seems like they are pretty good at it and my intuition of what is possible in the medium to long term is all sorts of fucked up.
I dont think this is good, mind you. Capital that is able to do labour is actually a Marxist nightmare. Actual Nick Land shit. This does seem to be the goal, however.

Thats part of the squeeze that makes it not worth the juice. Like the medical stuff and math stuff (even if it has to steal other people’s work to do it) isnt worth everything else that comes with it

Is Skullgirls still alive, population wise? For reference, I find Injustice 2 matches to this day, in less than 4 minutes.
