Hey there honorary Justice League members - it's a new week which means it's time for a new discussion thread!
For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week's releases. For any given title discussion, you should respond to that comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too.
In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.
Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators.
Things got incredibly awkward on my date at the Natural History Museum. Eventually, someone had to address the elephant in the room.
ABSOLUTE STEEL SUITS UP! “Get Brainiac” continues as Superman enlists a new ally in his search for his most fiendish foe. But if the man known as Steel is going to join the fight, he’s going to need a new suit of armor…
Well done issue. Love the effect Steel and Superman have on each other.
Absolute Superman and Wonder Woman have a similar outlook on befriending monsters. Won't even hurt a living corrosive ooze. Hope they connect on that when they inevitably meet.
This book wears its heart on its sleeve and earns it. Steel is so well fleshed out here, and his friendship with Kal is so good. Aaron is on a fucking roll in this arc.
I always love seeing Superman's transformative power and influence on others. His superpower is not strength but kindness and compassion. He makes you feel like you want to be a better version of yourself. To be the person he sees in you.
A great issue to use Steel's on integration into his inner circle and embracing his new role to show that. Along with how Superman deals with the opponents afterwards, as he continues the trend after Ra's to rehabilitate them. After all, they are the victims of Brainiac too.
Also, I like parasite becoming this small pet. Which means I am worried something might happen to him!
It's a good issue. I like John and Clark's friendship. The John/Lana romance gets a good setup as well. The villains had less to do, but I liked their designs.
Man, that made me emotional. Probably my favourite issue from the past year. To see all those "villains" being taken care and then given a second chance... and then you see the birth of Steel... it was epic.
I love that just being around Clark makes people want to be better. That being said I'm not ready for whatever Brainiac has planned, just please don't hurt Si
Best absolute ongoing and absolute steel is living up to the main universe version of just being awesome
Love the use of weirder non typical villains like chemo, atomic skull etc it makes it feel like an elseworld but also very superman like how morrisons action was
God this issue kicked ass, I love seeing Superman have his influence on others, and DAMNIT STEEL IS COOL. I am TERRIFIED for whats about to happen to my boy Kal and John with Brainiac. I also love the idea that Superman doesnt sleep and feels guilty when he does, god this book is so excellent. Seeing superman go out of his way to rehabilitate those villains is so good too this is Superman for the modern audience
This is one of my favorite issues of the series just in terms of how much it connects to the heart of who Superman is. It being an absolute book gives me a small amount of dread that it'll all be ripped away again.
I like that Clark showed Irons all of Smallville and the Fortress of Solitude, with Irons telling Clark that he was in Metropolis because he wanted to kill Ra’s Al Ghul for ruining his life before he helped Clark defeat King Shazam. I also like that we get to see Clark and Irons defeat and save the Atomic Skull and Brainiac, with Clark showing Irons a tour in Smallville and Irons introducing Clark to his mother. I like and enjoy their friendship, and I hope that we get to see them work together to save the world and defeat Brainiac. Overall, this comic is great!
SUPERSTAR WRITER/ARTIST JAMES HARREN TAKES THE DEMON ETRIGAN TO THE NEXT LEVEL!
The world is infested with a darkness it cannot see. Beasts from Hell feast on humanity's soul. Enter: Jason Blood. A man alive too long. Witness to centuries of Hell's victories. A wanderer with a shattered mind and a split soul. Following the mute face — a lost wizard — tortured by a voice from Hell, can Jason Blood protect our world and save his soul? Will the Demon Etrigan rise again? Superstar writer/artist James Harren creates a brand-new epic starring the mightiest demon of them all!
Oof, rough shape, Jason is in. What happened to him? Also, it feels like this book and Deadman kinda fit together with all the metaphysical stuff and connections to Hell etc.
This demon stuff happening in Gotham? They really don't know that is the worst place to do evil plots as Batman will always show up to stop it. And he got his own 'demons' to bring.
Absolutely solid first issue. And it's a good companion piece to Deadman and Jonah Hex. The art is good and the writing is sharp. I'm looking forward towards the next issue.
This fucking rocked and is easily my fav first issue of next level so far
It’s so Jack Kirby in nature it might as well be screaming it and that’s an incredible thing. From the writing to the swords and sorcery element but with horror to back it up and great writing.
James Harren has rarely ever missed for me and this is another example of him not missing
This was great, I love the art and Kirby-esque character designs. I am still hoping for a bit more reassurance that we are using more than just Kirby as influence, but I do enjoy this as well. Jason and Etrigan's relationship has been written well so far!
I do hope we aren't using the knight origin for Jason, which some of the dialogue seemed to imply-- it's never been used in Demon comics, and I much prefer the origin where he's just a normal peasant living a normal life who pissed Merlin off for innocuous reasons, as I feel it adds to the horror of his situation.
I'm reading through James Harren's previous work Ultramega right now. And while the Ultraman influence is obvious, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it's also has a giant Kirby/Fourth World influence as well. He does a lot of very interesting and creative things marrying the two concepts. I haven't finished it yet, but Ultramega is quite excellent and has basically sold me on The Demon. Very much looking forward to picking it up.
I'm hooked, art is great, story has me asking questions. Do we think this is modern Gotham or a future version of it, maybe just an Elseworld? The way the demons are drawn remind me a lot of early Constantine.
"Now nobody even asks why they and their kids are in a sexual relationship with something akin to a pocket mirror, a gun, a casino, and heroin. They just are. And we think that's terrific." Bruh.
Its so delightful how Kirby this issue goes, in a way that I think actually gets at the creative spark that made Kirby so potent, rather than just reheating his leftovers.
Marvel is making this week into a big launch for their Midnight stuff, and is nonetheless being absolutely mogged by DC.
For my first etrigan story it is really good, I find the characters and plot hooks intriguing to keep going and it’s a good first introduction to Jason who I really know the bare minimum of
Never really read an Etrigan book before, only really knew of him from the dcau. Was very pleasantly surprised by this and I absolutely loved the art and coloring for it!
What a first issue! The art feels perfect for this kind of story, its setting up a lot of things in a way that actually builds intrigue, I’m immediately sold
As Jo and her Green Lantern Corps head home from the war, Cameron Chase is readying a bombshell of her own…the Manhunter File! What was the O.S.S. Section ARGENT, and what terrible secret did it learn about what waits beyond reality? For a year and a half, we’ve piled on the questions…it’s time for some answers!
Like, do the Manhunters serve the Bad Idea 0 or are they containing it with their circle? Either way, they are definitely not the good guys. Especially if this 'soul harvest' thing is planned.
The past of D.E.O and then introduction of Task Force X. Yep, we knew Amanda Waller was coming. But Kyle Rayner too? I assume he is gonna be the 'Rick Flag' of the team.
I got the sense that the soul harvest is maybe connected to the apocalypse that's coming in Absolute Flash, which is likely also the disaster that Joker is building his arks as havens from. The Absolute Crisis.
Crazy issue, didn't expect an origin story for the Agency. The Rick Flag section reminded me of the Twilight Zone. Renee returning as a member of Task Force X was surprising. And apparently Kyle is apart of it as well, so I'm curious on what direction they're gonna take him in.
The story is definitely a lot, but personally I feel I'm keeping up with it just enough to stay interested and follow along, even if I don't get every single part. Balancing the cosmic side and the espionage side is something could easily spiral out and become an issue with the overall flow, but imo they've struck it well so far and I'm really enjoying the characters introduced in the current arc
personally I feel I'm keeping up with it just enough to stay interested and follow along, even if I don't get every single part
this is pretty much where I'm at. I like the story and its neat to see there's some bleedover between this and the lore in Absolute Martian Manhunter, but I'm also kind of a big dummy, so I hope they don't get too esoteric about things.
Al Ewing is a goddamn maniac lol, count on him to pull on all these different threads across both mainline and Absolute history to pull this one together. Killer issue, so many great intros and connections, but Un-kill Samis some next-level shit.
I might have to binge read this whole series at some point. I'm so lost with some of the concepts and what characters are referring to. Like I get the basics at a certain level but then it starts getting too cosmic and high level for me
THE FUTURE OF THE DEADMAN! In this loving ode to an occult-classic comic, the Deadman finds himself flung to one of a few feasible futures in which the forward march of Earth's phantoms has fallen off... for good. Boston Brand—human once more!— must survive a strange sojourn through a soulless tomorrow, featuring the freakiest-ever futuristic takes on a few familiar faces belonging to the DCU's phantasmagoric foothold. Soldier on, photon stranger, through the psycho-spiritual swamp that is... the Gr33n.
Huh, I didn't get that. A lot of this issue seemed to be parodying how other DC stories do premises like this one (e.g. you know its a dark future when everyone can't help but exposit backstory at you), so I don't know if a Great Darkness connection was seriously meant.
The Index was just some AI nanobot swarm that absorbed all the superheroes in this timeline; not really a character from anything or who will likely appear in anything again.
I mean at the end of the day, anything 'evil' is tied to the Great Darkness in the DC universe. It is the underlying thing beyond Heaven and Hell. So a power that is beyond either that can befuddle them, it fits to be the Great Darkness.
Though I doubt it cares about individuals when it had thralls like Darkseid and was quite upset when the Pariah decided to 'twist' its nature with the Dark Crisis. So I doubt it would be directly involved with just an evil guy who wants to live forever.
I like that Boston traveled to a possible future and learned about the Gr33n and met the Photon Stranger and future counterparts of the Justice League before he returned to his time and encountered someone. Overall, this comic he good.
BATGIRL FIGHTS AGAINST THE SUPERBLOOM! It’s lone bat and cub, as Batgirl must race across a dangerous Gotham City transformed by the superbloom to deliver a sick infant to Gotham General! Meanwhile, Tenji and Jaya are left behind to defend Bà Bao’s Noodle Shop from the plant creatures stalking the streets. With a surprise cameo, the high-stakes Batman: Bad Seeds epic continues here!
Good issue. Not really any particularly significant developments but for a tie in to this Poison Ivy crossover thing it's fun enough and the art and narration does a good job selling the determination vibes.
Also some nice continuity with the Nightwing tie in with him and Damian having teamed up, and the references to Nightwing's exhaustion stuff in the Watters run. And it's a great sign that writers across the board are consistently letting Damian's growth stick that Damian is the one being the caring one and reminding everyone else to get some rest and that sleep deprivation does, in fact, impact their performance. It's a nice touch and it's very in-line with the recent Williamson and PKJ-era Damian.
Batgirl, stabbed, holding onto a baby, fighting against TUCOS AND Plant Monsters while trying to still keep the former safe from the latter. Just an average night in Gotham.
Tenji really wants to prove himself and be a hero. That's laudable if nothing else.
Damian called her sister! It's nice to see her actually interacting with the Batfamily, albeit curt and only in a few pages. Also Dick just feels so...done which I guess reflects his emotional state in his book.
I like that Cassandra was able to defeat the plant monsters and send Mimi to a hospital, while Tenji and Jaya were able to protect the people of the restaurant from the plant monsters. Overall, this comic is good.
Welcome, foolish mortals. Not far from the shores of Gotham City, when the nights grow long, the leaves turn red, and a certain crisp chill comes into the air on a twilight lit by the full moon, the lives of heroes and antiheroes from Raven to Swamp Thing, Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, and more … turn toward the strange and unusual, the occult and delightful, the odd and the audacious. For those looking to give themselves a good, warm dose of the shivers, this anthology of scary stories to tell in the dark is the perfect assortment of fairy tales for troubled times and troubled souls alike. Pick up a copy wherever needful things and comic books are sold. We think you’ll find it the perfect companion to your handbook for the recently deceased.
This was overall a very good story and several stories were pretty damn good like,John and Zee,Abigail Arcane and Vixen.
Prime and Witchfire had the best story for me.It felt like a direct sequel to ther Superman arc and Prime just may have missed out on a kiss with her for the third time.
For the Raven backup, I like that Raven and Constantine worked together to defeat Bromm Stikk. Overall, this backup is fine.
For the Deadman backup, I like that Boston and the twins Orwin and Cynthia were able to humor the babysitter Becky before they get to celebrate Halloween together. Overall, this backup is good.
For the Vixen backup, I find it interesting that Mari wanted to be used more from the Justice League before she encountered Anansi, who called her out on not being used in many stories. Overall, this backup is interesting and meta.
For the Dr. Thirteen and Traci Thirteen backup, I find it interesting that Dr. Thirteen and Traci went to a house and learned about the ghost of Marguerite Henceworth’s mom with Dr. Thirteen believing that Marguerite killed her grandmother and Traci knowing the truth and that her fear is that her father would be wrong about not believing in the supernatural. Overall, this backup is good.
For the Superboy-Prime backup, I like that we get to see CK spend his Halloween working at the comic book store, with him dressing up as Constantine and Witchfire dressing up as Zatanna. Also, CK and Witchfire defeating demons. Overall, this backup is good.
For the Catwoman backup, I find it interesting that Selina stole something from the museum before an ancient cat summoned her to revive him. Overall, this backup is good.
For the Swamp Thing backup, I like that Swamp Thing encountered someone, who decided to stay away from him. Overall, this is a good backup.
For the Zatanna and Constantine backup, I like that Zatanna and Constantine went to Losthall Manor and leaned that it involves curses and ghosts because it shows that the sorceress cursed two lovers to be together forever before they decided to put them to rest. Overall, this backup is good.
FRACTION AND SCALERA TURN UP THE HEAT ON BAD SEEDS WITH THE COLDEST VILLAIN IN TOWN!
As the night wears on and the threat of dawn looms, Batman must search for answers from the one man capable of stopping Ivy and the bloom. Elsewhere, Verity Pennyworth must defend the Manor from all manner of threats—and they’re about to discover they picked the wrong house to mess with.
Would have thought that Pennyworth Manor has better security than just having mooks walk through the front door. Are all the alarms down due to the latest crisis? Seems like something Batman should have a contingency plan for.... Who were all the other people in the winter castle, was that Captain Cold?
I haven't been reading anything but Batman and Nightwing, but this issue says an emp took out all forms of communication except for Batmans boomtube tech channel. So I'd think alarms would be out. That's why verity is using paper files to research.
Verity is quickly becoming a highlight of this run. I'm liking what Fraction is doing with her. And I'm pleasantly suprised to see the continuation of the "Nora becomes evil also," arc. I feel like it's been a while since that was mentioned.
Im confused about víctor and nora.
At the end of the comic where she resurects,Victor it's the one freezed, but then he appear in detective comics by Ram V perfectly fine.
And about Nora, she appeared in urban legends and the died there.
So how it's their cronology? Cause I think that they never explain how Victor cure himself betwen nora's resurection and Ram'V run, and how nora resurect after urban legends
Verity is growing on me. She got that Pennyworth sass with her, along with the competence. While she might hide a darker past when she was about to hit that thieving cop with something deadly.
I still don't like what they did with Nora after they 'unfreezed' her and just made her Ms Freeze and a villain.
I liked this issue, first off its just funny seeing divorced supervillains fight it out lol, second Verity was hiliarious in this and I cant wait to see how much deeper her and Bruce's relationship can get. In terms of the event it was coool, curious with everything coming to a head. Was at first thrown for a loop with the Freezes (havent read that story i guess lol) but then I was like this is interesting potential.
I enjoyed this issue the scenes with verity are great and shows aspects to her character that are interesting and reminds me of Alfred
The story with Nora and victor continue to be track while Nora as a villain hasn’t been done much but she and victor are good here plus divorce villains are always interesting to read about
OK so I don't remember the specifics of the Tomasi story where Nora returned: what is Bruce referring to with Lex giving Freeze the cure? I don't remember Lex playing a role in that original story.
Overall fine issue, it's setting up some stuff that could be interesting as a continuation of that Tomasi Nora story. I just hope Fraction executes it well as while his run has been decent so far, it hasn't been quite amazing and I hope at some point this run reaches that level.
I get that it's trying to be a fun bit but, weird that Verity isn't bringing up "hey i'm fighting some burglars here" just to let Bruce know why she's otherwise occupied and perhaps to tell him to STFU.
On the one hand, this is another issue that's mostly fights. On the other hand, it actually did help develop Verity, her dynamic with Bruce, and also the plots with the Freezes.
Robbing Bruce Wayne in Batman masks. Ha! If they only knew.
Verity has the certified Pennyworth family wit and blase reaction to everything that she sees but she's much more nimble and capable in a fight. And probably HAS killed in the past but is restraining herself for Bruce's sake.
It's funny how Bruce gives NO credit to Victor for anything. Cryogenics? Lex. Saving Nora? Also Lex.
I still think turning Nora Fries into Mrs. Freeze is dumb but now we've got complicated married dynamics between Supervillain. She hates him and wants a divorce but still loves and cares about him.
I like that Bruce and Verity get to talk about the backstories of Victor and Nora freeze before Bruce saved Victor’s life and convinced Nora to save Gotham with Victor’s help while Verity fought criminals in Gotham. Overall, this comic is great!
Great art! It's setting up some monster cult stuff. I'm curious to see where it goes. I never read Jonah Hex before, but I liked this and I'm excited to see where it goes
ENTER: LOIS LANE! Clark’s crusade for the downtrodden has hit some walls. He wants to do the most good , but he feels the people who need him the most are the most invisible. All of that changes when he stumbles upon Lois Lane, an intrepid reporter who’s made it her mission to make the unseen seen. With information gleaned from her articles, can Clark begin to turn the tide in his mission to uplift the people of Metropolis?!
A slow burn, but each scene in itself is really well done. Craig's a tremendous artist, but he has a strong grasp of the principal voices he's developing.
Superman is 'the stranger' yea but Luthor is definitely the 'familiar', evil that is.
It is interesting how awkward Clark is when it comes to his interactions and finding his ways to help. He basically pulled a Batman there. But those visions also tell him the dangerous future he might get to.
Lois, well, she is great as with any version of her.
Definitely really slow-paced and a bit methodical with its set pieces. When this cover first came out, I had wanted it to be the human form of Ultra-Humanite, but it didn't come to pass. I'm wondering when or what will develop in the union-busting storyline for Clark and Lex to meet. I kind of want more out of this Clark.
I like that Clark spent five months being active as Superman while managing his job as a janitor at the Daily Planet. This includes him meeting a woman named Hazel, convincing someone to not tear town people’s homes, and having a dream about him ruling the people. Also, Lex using Project Vulcan to make the US the only superpower. Overall, this comic is excellent.
Garth Ennis’s tales of The Demon are collected for the first time! In these dark, fast-paced tales, Etrigan the Demon battles the Gothodaemon, the demon of Gotham City, with the help of Hitman. Then, a company of German soldiers from World War II are resurrected to capture an army base—and it’s up to the Demon and the crew of the Haunted Tank to send them back to their graves. Collected from THE DEMON #40 and 42-49, plus ANNUAL #2.
BEHIND ENEMY LINES! Wildcat, Dr. Midnite, and Hourman are trapped behind enemy lines and must save one of their former teammates! How will the heroes risk it all for one of their own? Find out in this last tale of the Justice Society of America!
I am wondering how Wildcat as the Spectre gonna go. Often, the Spectre is a punching bag for the 'big bad' to show off how powerful they are. I hope with Ted as the host, he can at least punch back.
I'm imagining the next person to try to show off by taking down the Spectre getting punched out in the middle of their evil monologue. And then his arc as the Spectre ends with him dragging Corrigan and Hal for good measure to his gym for boxing lessons.
I liked the art in the last issue, but it was just not working here. I think the big problem was the mouths, or more accurately, the vague suggestion thereof.
I like that, back in 1961, Ted, Charles, and Rex were able to save Al from harm before Al told them about Project Rocket Red. Overall, this comic is good.
Batman: The Brave and the Bold – The Bronze Age Omnibus Vol. 1 HC 2026 Edition

Guest-starring Wonder Woman, the Phantom Stranger, Adam Strange, Black Canary, the Teen Titans, The Flash, Green Arrow, Aquaman and more, these stories are collected in a single, massive hardcover for the first time.
Unlikely. Each issue tends to focus on a different guest. You should look up the covers/plots to check; a quick cover scan has her listed as the main guest for around 3 issues.
If it's a different guest every issue then I might enjoy that as well. If it's anything like the Brave and the Bold animated series then it's bound to be great.
